The Glastonbury Scally is of course a cliche, but like many cliches it arises out of common occurrence.

I've been to that festival many times, not paying for several years - and on every occasion of not paying save one was escorted into the festival by a cheerful man from 'the northwest'. The only other year, it was a Mancunian, who made a joke about him 'not being a Scally'.

The last year I went (as I handed my fiver for my dodgy wriststamp) I asked the bloke how come it was (nearly) always dudes from the NW - and he said his 'crews', with the collusion of the people on the gate naturally, had been 'doing the entrance' for nearly a decade.

This has nothing to do with people from the NW being thieves and robbers per se (which would of course be daft) but everything to do with a group of connected people who just happened to be from the NW in control of the various ongoing unpoliced nefarious practices at the festival.

shit the bed, what a line up - the Stones, The Mumfords and Nick cave

its dad rock hell

at least PIL are playing to break the monotony

So I am 22, and when the Glastonbury line up is finalised, days before the festival, I hear that Elvis Costello is headlining on the Saturday night. What luck I think. And he truly was excellent, one of his best performances (and I've seen some bad ones as well).

Well I am no longer 22, but if I was and I had bought my ticket, I'd be tempted to throw myself under a bus if I heard that some 70 year old has beens who haven't done anything interesting since the early 70s were playing. No I am not talking about Primal Scream or The Stone Roses, alhough both have close connections with the old farrts.

Can someone explain FFS what has gone wrong?

Actually perhaps I have been a little blinkered, as there are one to two bands I'd like to see and quite a few of them I've seen that I would not be embarassed to tell others. And by coincidence Costello is also headlining. Am I aloud to argue with myself on a thread? Trouble is the sycophantic BBC made such a fuss about those old gits playing as if it was important.

They are certainly old

They are maybe old gits, although a couple are fairly cool old hits

They certainly have one old peacock upfront

..but as the greatest rock'n'roll band that's ever been, who can still outplay many, I'd rather see them than anyone else - even if they've done bugger all new for 30 years.

If the RS had had the sense to commit mass suicide in the early 70s they would have been legendry, a la Doors or Hendrix, or acrimoniously split up.

Can't think of a painful enough death for our friends M&S.

Seriously though even though I really don't know why the Stones are highlighting, a more interesting line-up then everywhere else.

Shame it is so popular. And has sold out, but there again apart from the Fall and Half Man Half Biscuit that is what entertainment is about.

    • Yep I would definitely advise booking Janda. It was rammed and we even had to wait a bit for our reservation.
    • This reminds me of "the grasshopper" at Westerham when a tabloid paper did an exposé about their swinger parties (many many years ago)  The result was that every man and his dog went there to see if they could get in to a party. Pub did amazing business but think the club may have closed as a result.  Bet the Telegraph article will be great publicity for belair sex parties and every pervert under the sun will invade Dulwich village and the square (of shame)
    • I find Fusion are Horrendous. When they ran Forest Hill pools it was always (although a new facility at the time) really grubby. Overflowing filthy toilets, dirty changing rooms, slippery floors and filthy swimming pool with cloudy water and Lifeguards who did'nt give a damn about teens  jumping in the pool and making trouble pushing and splashing adult and elderly swimmers. It was grim and I cancelled my membership and joined Dulwich leisure Centre because I got tired of complaining about changing rooms that smelt of p**s and used sanitary products left on the floor...and nothing changing..new managers would come promise improvement and making zero difference. In the End they lost the contact and FHP is run by Better and it really is....Better! I'm now happy to go there its well staffed, clean and well run. Unfortunately unless Fusion loose the contract for the Lido I fear things won't improve.
