Italian Restaurant Recommendations

Never been to Si Mangia but notice that both gertie's only two posts ever on the forum ever are on this subject and I, along with many other regulars find that a new poster coming on specifically to either praise or criticise in over the top terms are less than reliable.
Would also like to recommend Si Mangia, I'm a regular and have always had a good experience when I've gone there, it is one of the most reasonably priced restaurants I know in London and the quality of the food and wine are always good considering the price, the staff are excellent and it's always busy.

Il Mirto I think has the best food by far, Carvaggio best service and surroundings, Locale best compromise (i.e. not outstanding in any area but always pretty good food, reliable service, okay prices) so last 2 if you want a romantic meal for example but Il Mirto if you're after the best food :) (Italiano father and son in the kitchen so can get hot under the collar!)

"Il Mirto" gets our vote every time - we always have a pizza (one of the best we've had in London) and often a pasta dish, and their tiramisu is very very good (we are an English-Sicilian couple so speak as italian food snobs. The wine is cheap and decent, the staff friendly. We go early (so cant vouce for how well they do when it is busy) and with our little toddler and feel just like we're in a local trattoria in Italy. The decor is down to earth, but again, that reminds us of Italy and the typical place around any corner.
We are Scottish/Italian couple and also love il mirto. Lovely homemade food. I would love it even more if they had more typical sardinian dishes like they used to... but apparently these were not often ordered by locals. For me still one of the best pizzas in london which proves that a good pizzaiolo is more important than a woodfired oven. We live nearer si mangia which is fine but prefer making the trip to il mirto.

    • I have just read on open council network that Tesco had applied for an alcohol licence, and an ATM license, according to the article. Not sure if permission was granted, due to local opposition, citing another supermarket might encourage shoplifting and anti-social behaviour.
    • In an ideal world, yes, more tax would be directed to the justice system. Because a lot of suspects don't get a fair trial and wrongly convicted. Often they'll have a long list of previous, so police are picking the low hanging fruit. And because legal aid solicitors and barristers' pay is now so anaemic, they simply don't have the time to work a case and defend it properly. So you probably see more people behind bars than there should be.  It started with Brown and then got way worse with Cameron, when he essentially tried to turn legal aid firms into giant call centres and put the contracts out to tender. Even since then, the system gets squeezed more every year.
    • Courts are in session from 10am to mid-day then 2pm to 4pm. Four hours a day with a two hour lunch is probably the cause.
    • You pay tax to fix problems  you underfund stuff my faking tax cuts and the breakdown of the system is what you get there are no cheap or easy fixes. It will take money and time - and people lack patience
