I have just received the following notification about remedial works at this junction, on Saturday 6th April. If you can, I would suggest avoiding this junction on that date.

Dear Councillors,

Ref: Peckham Rye/East Dulwich Road -Resurfacing Remedial Works

This is to inform you that FM Conway, the Council?s highways term contractor, would be undertaking some remedial works at the above junction on Saturday 6 April.

We recently did some signal improvement works at this junction but the tarmac that was layed has failed.

Conways are therefore rectifying this at their own cost.-

This date would ensure minimum disruption to traffic.

Oh, huge surprise!

But not taking account of any consequential cost on the long suffering motorist or bus user who once again has to put up with delay and confusion, only seconds, it seems, after the last time.

what do you think they should do then? stand on the corner handing out pound coins to long suffering motorists?

That would be nice, but the point I was making was about consequential loss, a perfectly accepted concept in civil law.

If you want a practical suggestion for recompense, then (making a not that bold assumption that the majority of those impacted were / are Southwark Council Tax payers), then some additional pro-bono work from Conways in Southwark (filling some pot-holes perhaps) which would have a general benefit in terms of more council tax money being available for other things would be nice. Because of their poor workmanship originally local people's lives are being additionally made worse (we should be prepared to accept necessary, but not unecessary disruption)

+1 to DJKillaQueen's comment - the road surface approaching this junction from the West (ie the Tesco side) is one of the most dangerous bits of tarmac for a cyclist in SE London. I had assumed that the original works would have included resurfacing this entire stretch - after all, the whole of the Colyton Road junction was resurfaced and that was in much better condition. Instead, it looks like they have selected about half the existing pot holes (seemingly at random) and then partially filled them, without levelling out afterwards (so some pothole became mini-hills in the road). I'll watch with interest to see if their second attempt is more successful... massive kudos to whoever in the council took them to task about it.

    • Tawny owls are hooting in Dawsons Heights very near me. But very elusive birds. Sadly now on the amber list.  I have heard the owls every night for the past couple of weeks  It is good to know they are here. They are quite loud so I think they are very near. I have never seen an owl in the wild before and wish I  could  see them.
