good fish and chips? Curry sauce?

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Does anyone know of a good fish and chip shop in the East Dulwich area or surrounding areas that also does curry sauce

I'd never really heard of the combo until I lived in Lincoln. Now, my partner is a Scot and pining for chips and curry sauce

I'm planning on taking him to the Sea Cow for some good quality fish/chip/tartare sauce eating

Any suggestions very welcome

Dulwich Fryer near ED station gets my vote. Sea Cow may have good quality fish, but the chips tend to disappoint.

I think Dulwich Fryer has curry sauce. But if you can't find it at the chippy, you could try the cheapo curry sauce from Sainsburys...

A bit further afield but Thank Cod for Ken's on Half Moon Lane is a great, traditional chippie. Am from Yorkshire and used to a certain chippie chip (not meaning to generalise but Southern chips tend to be a bit firm and potatoe-y). Ken totally hits the spot and his curry sauce isn't bad either!
Absolutely! They should definitely be made from potatoes but - IMHO - I don't think that they should be like a potato. Imagine if a potato is Bruce Willis, a chippie chip should be Ryan Gosling. A chippie chip should have structure but still be a bit soft and fluffy on the inside and without a hint of superfluous grease. It goes without saying that they need to be hot! I find that the disappointing ones have too much bite - the texture is almost al dente. Clearly, I need to get a life and stop thinking about chips (and/or Ryan Gosling).

Ah, Sarahf, you are a true connoisseur of the chip. I've been lucky enough only to have had that bad chip experience with poorly prepared oven chips. Usually made by me!

I now have a stinking cold so our Sunday jaunt around the park and to the chippie is in jeopardy. :(

I may just send OH on the bus with my requests. We're on the Old Kent Road so not exactly local.

Hoping to be by the end of the year :)

Another vote for Ken's. Worth a short trip. Especially if you catch them just having cooked up a fresh batch of chips.

Quite a few Chinese takeaways have the chips and curry sauce option :) I am from Manchester so it's chips & gravy as a rare treat for me and also chips in a bread roll / bun (chip barm if you're a northerner) which Southerners think is totally nuts too but worth a try! mmm now craving junk despite my shreddies haha

I think Ken's is an appallingly poor quality chippy to be honest. i was originally from Yorkshire too and have lived near that fish and chip shop on Half Mooon Lane for years, it's really not the best.

I love this analogy :)

Thank you all for your recommendations. They have been very helpful.

We went to Fish Chips & More today after visiting friends in Nunhead

All I can say is wow! They were so welcoming and the restaurant area is lovely and clean. The loos were spotless too- big thumbs up from me.

We both had haddock and chips and my partner had his beloved curry sauce :)

We will definitely be going back

    • I'm guessing they're busy. I found out just now that the SNT has tracked down the kids who attacked my dog, had strong words with their parents, and the gang has now broken up. I got a lot of detail, which I won't go into here, but it sounds as if they were also quite compassionate towards some of the kids, who came from less than optimal backgrounds, shall we say.  I know that those kids had nothing to do with the attack of the man in August and that they are also aware of the fireworks problem. Sounds like good community policing.
    • I'd rather go to actual local Safer Neighbourhood Team meetings and see the whites of their eyes.  Ours in Peckham Rye Park ward (maps of areas the ward covers are on the police website; no idea about the new one!) used to be very well attended, but sadly now not so.  The local police of the SNT seem to change far too regularly so they never have a chance to really know the area and the people.  And the last meeting, held at the Tenants Hall of Brenchley Gardens (so right on the edge of the geographical area), was held with one day's notice.  Not good.
    • Friends of Peckham Rye Park sent emails to its members (do join if you can; it's useful) saying a few nights ago a fire was started on the SE22 side of the park by kids with fireworks.  Horrific.
