jomchugh
Hi. I am planning to move to one of the streets behind Denmark Hill station and wondered what people thought of this area. It is categorised as Camberwell and the crime statistics for the area seem high. Has anyone heard any stories or is it a nice area to move to? Thanks Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/32836-denmark-hill/ Share on other sites
dildals
All the roads down the hill from Denmark Hill station are absolutely lovely, so I guess it depends a little which road you are referring to? The roads up the hill from the station are nice too, by the way. I'd be more worried if you said Loughborough Junction station, rather than Denmark Hill station! There's a couple of nice pubs (Crooked Well, The Phoenix, The Grand Union), nice restaurants on Camberwell Church Street (Caravaggio's, Mangal, Angels & Gypsies), a lovely coffee shop with good food on the corner of Denmark Hill and Love Walk. Tennis courts on Camberwell Grove. Ruskin Park closeby and Herne Hill for an additional selection of pubs, restaurants (or Bellenden Road if you fancy a change of scenery). Pugwash
All of the streets are subject to residents only parking with traffic wardens several times a day checking out . OK if you have not got a car or motor bike Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/32836-denmark-hill/#findComment-650560 Share on other sites
UncleBen
Maudsley hospital-lots of out-patients hanging around all day. Methodone clinic also on Denmark Hill. Nothing but ambulance sirens to &from Kings 24/7. Train noise. Jeremy
Depends what you mean by "behind" I suppose, but generally it's an excellent area. South or east of the station probably better than north or west. Don't be put off by the SE5 postcode, it's a fairly quiet area if you're not too close to the main road. Grove Lane, Grove Park and Camberwell Grove have some of the nicest houses in SE London.Camberwell proper is really improving, with good places to eat and drink. computedshorty
Denmark Hill was once a thriving area, with the Camberwell Palace Theatre live shows , the Odeon Cinema corner of Coldharbour Lane, the Golden Domes Cinema very small with gas lamps at the side of the auditorium, this was facing the tram shelter in the middle of the road, the trams were noisy you could hear them at a show, but they got you there and home for a few pence.A Lyons Corner House for your cuppa, or get your fresh pies or sausages from Kennedys, your radio?s from Analoy Radio shop, walk round Woolworth buy a few things for just pence, buy your clothes or even a watch or a gun at J. A. Davis the Mail order Store. Get that excellent service from a much smaller Kings Collage Hospital, no large Dentist Block then, drop into the Fox on the Hill for a livener, visit Ruskin Park, take a train for that day out from Denmark Hill Station. You might even bump into Freddy Mills who lived at the top of the road. Those were the days, now very much altered, the changes are not for the better, still if you did not know how it was then it could suit you. Ian1984
Good posts - I love Dulwich. Look at this description of our area by a letting agent Portmoor ? http://www.portmoor.co.uk/rent-dulwich.html . I think it sums us up ? we are ?the most charming corner of London.? Would definitely recommend it. Denmark hill is a bit of a mini Dulwich in my oppinion. There are really good pubs (but not as many). There is quite a lot of wealth (in roads behind the station). The big difference is that the transport is better in Denmark Hill but is is slightly more dangerous being just south of Camberwell (but very much the best end as near Camberwell Green which is not too bad). I would definitely say don't worry too much on the crime stats (prob worse as they lump the whole of SE5 together and Denmark Hill much safer than the north of SE5) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/32836-denmark-hill/#findComment-650637 Share on other sites
sanjeethundal
Although the streets are lovely, its extremely quiet and deserted on an evening which I find quite scary. Personally from 930pm onwards I call a cab to pick me up from Denmark Hill to drive me home which costs a fiver. It may just be me being overly cautious as I would do this wherever I lived in London if the streets were that quiet. Girl82
I think the streets to the east of Denmark Hill Station - Camberwell Grove, Shenley, Crofton, Denman, Bushey Hill Road etc - are all lovely. As someone else said, I'd be more cautious about Loughborough Junction. I used to live round there and found it quite intimidating after dark! cle
Just moved near there. Love it. Beautiful architecture in the streets mentioned. Doesn't feel like being in 'Camberwell' - reputation-wise. But of course it's not far.Much better transport and cheaper cabs from town. Crooked Well better food than Franklins certainly, best in area.Closer to Camberwell and Bellenden Rd, which are a lot more laidback and indepedent spirited and less 'Northcote Road' than LL.Not as good for parks/grenery though. And yes, it's closer to the dumps. But that's London for you. Do it. Too Good To Be True
Have lived on Dagmar Road and Grace's Road. Never a problem crime wise. Probably similar levels of general crime to ED. Burglaries lower I reckon as less suburban. Neighbours were literary agent, smattering of housing association, two architects, pharmacist, head of marketing for BBC TV, a furniture specialist at one of the big auction houses, couple of Dulwich college staff, lots of journos, media types. Again pretty similar to ED I imagine. . Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/32836-denmark-hill/#findComment-652325 Share on other sites
Too Good To Be True
I've also lived near Loughborough Junction. That's an order of magnitude worse for crime although I gather it's improving a great deal.
