Where to go shopping locally?

EmED

Recommended Posts

So now we got all the shop talk out the way, is EmED for real or is EmED a GLA/ZhongRong stooge sent to stalk the local forums and plant the seed of need.

Q.What does ED really need? A. A new mall full of real shops for real people - if only that could be a reality...

*Two weeks later* Our dreams have been answered there is a planning application to build 900,000 sqft of mall on the top of Crystal Palace Park. People of ED this is exactly what you all want, get behind it and be grateful to Borris' billionaire investor. Don't think about the loss of public amentity, don't dwell on the impact on ED roads and environment, to hell with all that, just think about the shopping and the price tag kerching, kerching, ching!

There's another tune this brings to mine - it's called Big Yellow Taxi.

People, calm yourselves. ED has a great selection of amenities but you know, sometimes, you might need a generic high street store. Sme of these might even employ people who live in the area.

Sometimes you might just need that pair of Zara shoes... (Need/want - fine line so lets not have that argument)

This is besides the point that it woud be beyond folly to build yet more shops over a green space in an area of London with, frankly crap, transport links.

Dodgy OP or not I'm absolutely horrified to hear the plans proposed for beautiful Crystal Palace. I'm a regular traveller to the spots centre an know only too well that the roads in the area cannot even handle the current traffic.

Taking the OP at face value - ever heard of online shopping? Shock, horror - you can even get Boots online!

There is considerable doubt that the plans will e ever be realised, together with considerable local opposition. CP'ers like their triangle with its plethora of independent shops. A huge retail area slap bang on top of the lovely park would ruin the area and damage the livelihood of the local traders.

I love to shop local when I can but for clothes I have to shop online or in large generic stores for plus size clothes - unfortunately not all of us have the luxury of popping to ED, Fenton Walsh, Mrs Robinsons and def not Give and Take for day to day clothing.

But you can order stuff on-line, including small things like lipstick, and collect it there without having to pay a delivery charge.

Me too EDmummy. I prefer Crystal Palace Park over Dulwich Park these day as it is more user friendly, there are no restricted areas and dogs are welcome. You're right about it being a beautiful park, I love the dramatic landscapes, views, unmanicured planting, long established trees, wooded areas and the bats.

I understand that those who are excited about the idea of having a shopping mall on the hill hardly use the park and think it is too big, shabby and neglected, whereas those who do not support this proposal see it as a much loved and used asset. Still this topic probably requires a separate thread.

Back to the OP!

If you've got a car and want all/most high street retail brands

...then it's Bluewater. 30 mins, no problem parking, almost all high street brands plus John Lewis/M&S and anpther big one(?)

souless, yes...a place I once said I'd never go to, yes....my first reluctant choice for a mixed all people's shopping visit, yes

I hate shopping, and shopping centres, and most individual shops, to be honest. But Westfield has a Franco Manca pizza stand with a wood-burning oven, and a few other genuinely good and interesting food outlets, so I can be persuaded to go there. In every other respect it's like hell on earth, obviously.

Don't go via Blackheath. A2 via Catford, avoiding S circular as much as possible (Crofton Park/Ladywell cut throughs).

Bluewater's food outlets have really improved recently. Last trips have had Jamie's Italian, Byron and Wahaca. All chains obviously but a darn sight better than La Tasca, which used to be the standard of restaurant there.

They must have changed it then since I used it, which was a few years back.

Hi cubista, motor racing has been back at CPP for last couple of years http://www.motorsportatthepalace.co.uk/

Not a lot of people know this but as well as the Italian Job, racing scenes from Rush http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rush_%282013_film%29 were filmed there last year.

I think the Franco Manca is the only redeeming feature of Westfield Stratford (that and John Lewis - I love me some John Lewis). The intrusive musak and flashing signs everywhere are a complete sensory overload and make me feel a little bit angry as soon as I walk in.

I share the same affliction.

I have recently discovered Mabel on Melbourne Grove, just round the corner from the station. They have a lovely selection of vintage treasures mixed with pre-loved pieces.... Really reasonable pricing, and they have everything from high street to designer, and some real amazing vintage bits. Not a shopping centre, but well worth a visit. Highly recommended!

You don't by any chance have a connection to this shop do you, or do you just really, really like it?

I notice it's the only subject you have ever posted on!

Well, we will soon find out if there is to be a new local shopping mall or world trade centre just up the road from ED. A press conference is taking place in Crystal Palace Park tomorrow morning where the plans to sell the CPP hilltop to a billionaire investor will be unveiled. • It was an absolute shit show. And so much anger coming from both sides, not becoming at all (was surprised how riled cool Rishi was getting).  Agree about the format, it was lazy, whatsherchops wasn't asking pertinent questions, she was just going for binary yesses or nos. The producers didn't force either side to drill down on anything, just make commitments so they got good soundbites.  If I hear 'my father was a tool maker' / my wife's a nurse / my father was a GP one more time... as if any of those things qualify anyone to fix / understand anything.
    • Good.  Subsidence claims generally have an excess of £1000 per claim, but was yours higher?
    • Indeed, many house here have had or will have subsidence issues so one needs to bear that in mind.  Many houses here have shallow foundations but they have been around 100 years or so without too much issue. What the surveyor has told you doesn't feel like a 'red flag', more of a sensible warning.  Bear in mind that although the surveyor is nominally working for you, their focus iln reality is mostly on the lender and the risk of being sued, either by them or you.  So they are always pretty cautious.  It would be wise to get a 2nd opinion, eg. from a structural engineer.  Or talk  to the original surveyor directly as they may say more than they are prepared to put in a report.  It's a little difficult from the description to identify what the situation is but the scenario in which part of a property has been underpinned and the rest has not is fairly common here.  The proximity of trees is likely to be the main thing to be concerned about, particularly after the hot summer of 2002, as insurers generally regard them as risky, especially if they are not cut back from time to time.  A second surveyor can advise directly on this. It would definitely be worth trying to take over the current buildings insurance.  Indeed, it may be quite hard to find new cover.  Enquire what the current premium is and who the policy is ultiimately underwitten by (ie. is it a name that you have ever heard of?)  The insurance industry, in general, works to a guideline that the insurance of an underpinned property should transfer to a new owner.   https://www.biba.org.uk/insurance-guides/home-insurance-guides/subsidence/
    • More than the 2 contestants, the format and production was the main fault last night - allowing 45 seconds for an answer will get you those responses from any 2 candidates Awful show
