El Pibe
"The 70,000 figure? That's personal items"Ha ha, no way!! I Thought that was obvious.and math (plural maths) is most decidedly a made up word. It's just a short form of mathematics.maths UK, math USmathematic is an adjective so if you ask me we have it right. edhistory
May I refer you to the Oxford English Dictionary, Second Edition, 1991, Volume IX, page 469 for "math" and page 471 for "maths"?John K Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/37028-bowies-top-100-books/page/2/#findComment-684415 Share on other sites
El Pibe
not really. but i'll take your word for it. I'll never use it without sounding like a twat, but happy to stand corrected. And just to clarify, I never denied the existence of the word math.I was skeptical that math as a singular of the plural maths was real, mathematics being a noncountable noun it makes no sense to have a singular. You can't say one mathematic, two mathematics, so why would the short forms change the meaning? Are you making math = single calculation up? Otta
The Oxford dictionary does change over the years. A bit like the borders of Peckham and East Dulwich. It seems that John will cling to the past when it suits his purposes, but is happy to take an update when it helps him to "prove" a point. The actual word is mathematics."do the math" is a term used by idiots. uncleglen
I haven't read any of those books except a bits of a copy of Viz I bought in a 2nd hand shop for someone else. Atticus
Bowie is good, not great. His adoring clan sneer at those who aren't on board 'they just don't get it' etc supposing some kind of intellectual supremacy, a bit like fans of Stewart Lee Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/37028-bowies-top-100-books/page/2/#findComment-684658 Share on other sites

El Pibe
when he's good he's great. Some pretty ropey stuff in there, but then I challenge anyone to be consistently good over such a career.Luckily Mozart died before doing an ill advised 80's style cover version of a M?burg classic with Haydn. Atticus
El Pibe, spot on! What would have become of Lennon too? Doubt there would have been a dalliance with a Frog Chorus, mind. El Pibe
Lennon & McCartney = massively greater than the sum of the parts. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/37028-bowies-top-100-books/page/2/#findComment-684752 Share on other sites
Otta
Thing that impresses me about DB is that he refused to give up. He was trying everything fir years before finally hitting the jackpot with Ziggy. I tend to agree with El Pibe / Atticus though. There are some great tracks, but I've never been able to get in to him in a big way. And like as not had sketches made of the two of them and their collaborators and distributed among the cognoscenti.Early MTV if you will.Mozart also may have glanced toward Haydn and ventured "I have a notion concerning a musical project, the concept of which is an engine of general sorts made of base metal and of..."Joseph informed him "Enough with the metal nonsense, already Wolfgang, go with what you're doing it's not enough you should make your mother proud"?"Act like a mensch"!
