I am helping a friend organise a birthday party for her 7 year old, excuse me for being a bit out of touch, but do kids at that age still expect a party bag? And if so, what kind of things do you put in them these days? When I was a kid it was really just to take home the cake, but these days I expect you probably get a Nintendo DS game or something :) Any help appreciated!

Sweets, and something little. A book is a nice idea, or those little foil packs with Lego mini figures, Moshi Monsters etc seem to be a popular choice at the parties my son has been to recently.

I have made hair clips for a number of party bags for girls, which I think is a nice idea as they're something they can keep.

That said, no matter how many of those stretchy yellow people we end up with, the kids are always excited!

At 7, if they've had a good time at the party then maybe don't worry about a party bag! They're sure to go home talking about the party rather than afterwards. Then again, I finished with party bags at about age 10/11 for my kids.

A bit of cake and a pencil or something is ok?

I think us adults always worry about everything and our kids are ok about it.

Sorry to go off topic but 'show me the child at 7 and I will show you the man'

Have a good time.

I had the same problem in the summer (my son was turning 8) Think we got everything from Ebay if you search party bags.

Party bag contained:

Make your own glider plane ( also available in packs of 5 at the pound shop)

Whoopie cushion

Space Popper

mini skate board ( tex deck style) also available in packs of 5 at pound land

Glow stick

and sweets

All boys and girls very happy...I did add a lip seal in the girls bags.

Pound Land is the way forward!

Hope they have a fab birthday.

    • Another recommendation for Dulwich Test and Services Centre. Only been using them for a couple of years but wish I’d found them earlier
    • A new roadmap (surely railmap?!) for rail accessibility has been published: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/accessible-railways-roadmap It says "approximately 56% of stations and around 66% of the 1.3 billion journeys that take place on the network have step-free access to platforms...  "£373 million has been committed over the next 5 years to deliver Access for All projects, providing step-free access from station entrances to and between platforms, alongside other essential accessibility upgrades. These works, together, will increase the number of step-free stations across Great Britain from 56% to 58%. "This improvement will make travel easier with step-free access available at stations covering an increased share of total rail journeys – from 66% up to 71%" Don't know what that means for us here: upgrading Peckham Rye would cover a lot of rail journeys but the cost has no doubt increased from the £40m figure previously quoted. So that would eat into a lot of the funding.
