Bit random but was thinking to myself last night I never hear owls in London. I grew up on the border of Liverpool / Lancashire and much as our area was relatively built up extensive farmland was just a mile or so away and there were loads of Tawny Owls. At a certain times of night there would be two clearly perched on a tree in our garden and they were a regular feature but I have never seen any in London.

Does anyone ever see / hear them around here? Surely there are some in Dul Park, Peck Rye?

As luck would have it I have been hearing owls all this week along Underhill Rd, around sunset.

The sound is from our rooftops where I think one perches to spot rodents who gather beneath overflowing bird feeders in the back gardens.

Just for reference .. You cannot do a 3 letter search here. Search owl* and you will find all the

refernces to owl.

Hi there Mrs TP,

Might be worthwhile going along to one of the Dawn Chorus bird walks usually on later in the year - Peckham Rye Park/One Tree Hill and other places. I took my son along and we couldn't believe just how many types of bird are actually living in Peckham Rye Park.

Was it on a perch at a show or a zoo, Foxy?? ;)

I hadn't seen this thread so I posted the below on a new thread this morning:

For the last few days I've been hearing what I can only assume is an owl around the gardens at the back of our house in Upland Rd. Mostly at night but sometimes quite early evening. We heard a tawny owl quite often last year but this sounds different - three short barks, quite doglike, repeated at 30 sec or so intervals. At first I thought it was a fox but the call is always the same and moves too quickly for a fox. I will try to record it over the next couple of days.

Evil...I go to work very early and heard something very similar, or at least something I could not quite place, two days ago. It was like a loud knocking but way to forceful for a woodpecker, spaced half-a-minute apart. I live opposite Goodrich School, near to Dunstan's Road.
That sounds like the same thing, Nigello, and I am just between Goodrich and Crebor, so very near you. I have tried identifying it on the RSPB website and similar but, so far, the only thing I can find that sounds like it is an Australian Barking owl. I will try to make a recording and post it here to see if anyone can tell us what it is.

I was about 10ft away.. The Owl may of been able to see his reflection in the lens.

In the original (uncompressed) picture printed on A3, You can clearly see my reflection in the creatures left eye.

Pic. here is compressed but still shows good definition (See Feathers)

Nikon Lenses. :)

    • This week's edition of The Briefing Room I found really useful and impressively informative on the training aspect.  David Aaronovitch has come a long way since his University Challenge day. 😉  It's available to hear online or download as mp3. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002n7wv In a few days time resident doctors -who used to be known as junior doctors - were meant to be going on strike. This would be the 14th strike by the doctors’ union since March 2023. The ostensible reason was pay but now the dispute may be over without more increases to salary levels. The Government has instead made an offer to do something about the other big issue for early career doctors - working conditions and specialist training places. David Aaronovitch and guests discuss what's going on and ask what the problem is with the way we in Britain train our doctors? Guests: Hugh Pym, BBC Health Editor Sir Andrew Goddard, Consultant Gastroenterologist Professor Martin McKee, Professor of European Public Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Mark Dayan, Policy Analyst, Nuffield Trust. Presenter: David Aaronovitch Producers: Caroline Bayley, Kirsteen Knight, Cordelia Hemming Production Co-ordinator: Maria Ogundele Sound Engineers: Michael Regaard, Gareth Jones Editor: Richard Vadon
