Primula
I've just moved to ED and am wondering about the possibility of getting an allotment. What's the inside track on obtaining one? Or is it a case of waiting lists being so long it is likely i'd be too decrepit to be in a fit state work one? Earl Aelfheah
The waiting lists are pretty long (some up to 4 years). There are quite a few in the surrounding area though, so worth phoning round and seeing what's what. Whittler
The allotments in Southwark Borough are all self managed (as far as i'm aware) so it means finding the sites nearest to you and contacting the relevant committee/organisation - maybe someone else on here can help with that?? http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200073/parks_and_open_spaces/532/allotments_contacts/1Lewisham Council allotments are run slightly differently with a proportion directly managed by the council and others self managed on council land, but i know for a fact that the waiting lists are long (i live near the Horniman, so just in Lewisham, and i waited 6 years for a plot) and now plots are only given to those living in Lewisham Borough due to long waiting lists.... ontheRye
Stuart road allotments in Nunhead waiting list is closed currently, but usually reviewed at AGM in March - last year it was reopened after AGM but closed within a few weeks later - think policy is to close it when numbers get to 100 - there are 200+ allotments and newbies tend to be given half plots, so list can come down alot over a year - usually notices will be stuck on the gates advising that the waiting is open/closed Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/40788-allotment/#findComment-716496 Share on other sites

bawdy-nan
I think its pretty impossible. I wonder how many allotment holders also have huge Dulwich gardens ... sigh Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/40788-allotment/#findComment-716785 Share on other sites
steveo
I think that's the answer: find someone with a large garden that they can't manage and off offer some sort of exchange Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/40788-allotment/#findComment-716791 Share on other sites
ChristineB
You could try volunteering at the Dulwich Vegetable Garden (DVG) behind Rosebery Lodge in Dulwich Park. We're always looking for more people. It's a volunteer-run community fruit and veg garden, and everyone shares the produce. During the winter the DVG is open Sundays only, 10.30-12.30. From 1 March it will be open on Wednesdays as well at the same time.ChristineDulwich Veg Garden Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/40788-allotment/#findComment-717643 Share on other sites

sjsl
Did you get anywhere?! I have an allotment and would be happy to offer a share to a would-be vegetable grower, or maybe someone on the waiting list who wants to get stuck in sooner. If anyone's interested do pm me. jack'n'danny
Why don't you just simply buy your Fruit & Veg at Morrisons? It's nice and cheap without all the hassle of digging over ground etc, etc...
