It's a great idea and there was a lovely community feel. Shame about the weather. Good Pimms. Great T-shirts. The kids' races were fun. It would be nice to have more variety in the stalls and types of food available - and more cake - it had all run out by the time we got there. What about some live music, coconut shy and better prizes on the tombola? You could get local businesses to sponsor/donate. I won a very nice bottle of Foxtons' champagne at the East Dulwich Forum party last autumn!

The Goose was there and had a good time watching the dogs and the Punch and Judy :))

We'd like to see some ferret racing like they have in Dorset :)

It would be great if it could be expanded to have more stalls, but I guess you are limited by people coming forward. Shame the weather was a bit rubbish, so we ended up in the Clock House having a delicious meal despite our hangovers.

We'd be happy to put on some live folkie music, DJing or maybe morris dancing if you like next year - get in touch!

Getting better ever year, really good layout this time and beginning to feel like a real cosy fete. Real shame about the weather, i think that it's 5 out of 6 times its been hit by bad weather Maybe the dates should be moved, that weekend seems to be a really bad one. There must be some weather data out there about this kind of thing ?

I loved it.

Me and friends arrived about 2pm to the beginning of the dog shows.

I made a carrot cake with added dates and walnuts and a rather a lot of lush topping.

To be frank I made two, but kept one for me.

What did anyone think of it? We went back to the stall about 30 mins later and it had all been sold!

Didn't see anyone clutching their stomachs and throwing up so should have been okay.

Anywayyyy I love the Fete. I don't care about the weather. It's just such a fun thing to do but looking at the entire crowd of people there I would not say it is representative of the good folk of Peckham Rye.

I am not a dog owner but I do love dogs and the dog show is always fun specially in these days when dogs and their owners are given bad press. I witnessed the deep joy of a mum and her two daughters when one of her labradors won a 4th prize waggiest tail prize. It just was a sunny moment. Let's be unPCly frank, the dog show did not include a representation of the dogs I see every day, either!

I spoke with a councillor about the police and the police did not come with their bus (though I was at the Police Ward Panel meet on Thursday when they said they would be) because apparently the police get a bit upset that no-one comes to their stall!

I think next year the local SaferNeighbourhoodTeams being the Council Wardens, the Park Wardens, the local SPCOs and police should have a stall. I will try to raise it when I see them and maybe the Friends could approach them too.

I did not see the Peckham Society stall. Did I miss it?

Who was the dog show judge? We wanted to appeal three decisions and ask for a doping test, the greyhound should have got the waggiest tail award but couldn't lift his tail once. Something Very Wrong!

A great afternoon.

Topped yesterday when I went to the Regent Street Festival. The entire street was closed to traffic and lined with stalls and a ferris wheel. It was fabulous fun. I took photos from the top of the wheel of the length of Regents Street full of people.

Can we have a ferris wheel next year or even better a tethered Hot Air Balloon? Ask the couple who are members of the Peckham Society who are members of balloon clubs in London and give talks on the history of ballooning, of which South London plays a big part!

A great day, Boosboss, really had fun. Thanks for all your hard work.

Edited to add: I took a lot of dog photos so happy to post some up maybe on my Flickr account and I am sure I got great ones of the Great Dane and his mates! I shall post here when they are on my Flickr account or may just post them here.

I went late on sat afternoon and sadly most of the cakes had gone! I went with a friend and her two young daughters - they had face paint which they loved (and it was free!), loved seeing the dogs, punch and judy, fishing for ducks for a prize. We did also get caught in the rain but we had shelter at the book stall, bought some books.

it was nice to see so many people out and even though it rained the kids really enjoyed it.

I would definately go again but its a shame about the weather!

What would you like to see the stalls selling?

What other food sales would you like?

Definitely more cake next year. I'll start badgering all you cake-bakers earlier next time

Live Music - Have emailed Sue-Gooseisout and was impressed with the short acoustic treat we had with the accordian and fiddle on saturday, will try to extend that side.

We underestimated the skill of the local residents! We ran out of coconuts about 4pm, (3 large bags of them)

Taking note of the generous local businesses for the Tombola.

It was really great!Me,my dogs and friends had a lot of fun!I have been there last year but I was working at Green and Blue tent and promised myself I will be back next year with my dog.BTW,why G&B wasnt there this year?

We decided to provide the beer/pimms/wine ourselves this year as the profit generated is so great. Hopefully you weren't too dissappointed.

We had originally planned it for the last weekend of Aug, which was beautiful. Will look at earlier dates next year.

PeckhamRose & Standswithfist , will respond later. Must do some work now :)

Thanks, keep the comments coming.

I don't think changing the dates will guarantee better weather.

We have warm dry days in November sometimes!

It's just Luck.

It's more likely people will come in September since the kids are back in school so people are back from holidays.

I thought it was really fun. Well done to the organisers!

I only popped in for a bit as I happened to be walking past. I picked up some yummy home made cakes and jam. Definitely made a mental note to go along 'properly' next year and to bring friends.

Yes weather can be fickle but historically that period don't look good. Anyway lots of people don't get the opportunity to holiday so it would be something else for them to look forward to as part of their school vacations. Sure it is just going to get bigger and bigger - well done.

What about, since there are at least two allotment groups in the area, some traditional 'biggest pumpkin', 'biggest vegetable marrow' 'best tomato crop' 'prize leek' 'knobliest potato' 'most obscene carrot' type contests?

Actually, could do the same with baking and jam making. And dahlias. Aren't dahlias actually compulsory at summer fetes? Isn't there a law about that?

Anyway, rain or not, I enjoyed myself. Joined the Friends of Peckham Rye Park. Had a fantastic sausage sandwich. But the greyhound should have won the prettiest dog class.

Yes He Should! So there's something dodgy going on and I think nothing less than a full investigation be held.

And I was saying to my mates how fabulously home counties the fete was, so for sure a vegetable competition should be held.

I would have won for my sunflower too, it's growing on my balcony and I live on the 3rd floor!

I agree with both, but we advertised and invited many groups. Re the dogs, the bad press may give some owners the false idea that their dog wouldn't win anyway

I did not see the Peckham Society stall. Did I miss it?

The Peckham Society did a tour of the park at 3.30

Who was the dog show judge? We wanted to appeal three decisions and ask for a doping test, the greyhound should have got the waggiest tail award but couldn't lift his tail once. Something Very Wrong!

Typically Pointydogs(Greyhounds) and rain don't mix well, soft things really

Cost to attendees is something we consider. If sponsorship to provide one or the other was available so that the rides were free, we'd welcome them

I took a lot of dog photos so happy to post some up maybe on my Flickr account and I am sure I got great ones of the Great Dane and his mates! I shall post here when they are on my Flickr account or may just post them here.

Would you be able to post them on the FOPRP Yahoo group site?

Boosboss-the beer was good but I just love G&B wines

I think that last year there was also a pet store tent, nothing like that this year...

Kamila, I think the beer may have been better than you thought! The same pet stalls as last year were there. FOAL FArm and Greyhounds In Need.

Full investigation held and no foul play was identified. Beauty being in the eye of etc....
Bless boosboss for being so thorough in responding to feedback. Was sad to miss it but had to be elsewhere in London on Saturday - but next year will be there with a vengeance and a small child large enough to have its face painted and be very excited about it.

Boosboss, in answer to your question about what stalls and what food, here are a few ideas:

homemade lemonade

hot chocolate

crepes

Thai curry and rice

fancy tarts (the edible type, sweet and savoury, no jokes please!)

posh salads

hot fresh doughnuts

cheeses (to eat there with some little bread rolls or biscuits, mmm, or to take home)

olives

country cider

pottery (e.g. North Street Potters)

kids' art area: easels, paints and a display board for the masterpieces

hoopla

pony rides

Hope that's useful.

Boosboss what about the bit about the SNT stall? I shall also ask them when they're walking around the site. FYI when I went on the fab ferris wheel in the middle of Regents Street the next day, it cost a mere ?2.50 which I thought was mighty fayre, I mean fair, no "fear", no, now I've got up too early...

How about asking Metropolis - motorcycle and scooter company in Vauxhall - to attend and offer accompanied rides around a very small sectioned off area on the park to teach kids who are going to ride anyway but currently ride mini motos unsafely? Also will appeal to potential scooter-commuters and others? Now THAT's a good idea!

I shall look up the names of the balloon folk and send you their details.

Oh - and my photos are on FILM so shall upload scanned copies when they return. I know, I know, but I love film.

Thanks Edanna, all suggestions noted :)

Boosboss what about the bit about the SNT stall?

We have a member on the ward panel, so will suggest that

Very fair! However, multiplied by 4 (family) that's ?10. assuming that the level of customers at our fete would be great enough to maintain that low price. Worth looking into though

How about applying for an Awards for All grant? i could help if necessary.

Could be used to provide more free stuff like a ferris wheel or balloon.. would probably need to emphasise "health or environmental" themes.

Prices charged by UK vets rose by 63% between 2016 and 2023, external, and the government's competition regulator has questioned whether the pet-care market - as it stands - is giving customers value for money. One anonymous vet, who works for the UK's largest vet care provider, IVC Evidensia, said that the company has introduced a new monitoring system that could encourage vets to offer pet owners costly tests and treatment options. A spokesperson for IVC told Panorama: "The group's vets and vet nurses never prioritise revenue or transaction value over and above the welfare of the animal in their care." More than half of all UK households are thought to own a pet, external. Over the past few months, hundreds of pet owners have contacted BBC Your Voice with concerns about vet bills. One person said they had paid £5,600 for 18 hours of vet-care for their pet: "I would have paid anything to save him but felt afterwards we had been taken advantage of." Another described how their dog had undergone numerous blood tests and scans: "At the end of the treatment we were none the wiser about her illness and we were presented with a bill of £13,000."   Image caption, UK pet owners spent £6.3bn on vet and other pet-care services in 2024, according to the CMA Mounting concerns over whether pet owners are receiving a fair deal prompted a formal investigation by government watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). In a provisional report, external at the end of last year, it identified several issues: Whether vet companies are being transparent about the ownership of individual practices and whether pet owners have enough information about pricing The concentration of vet practices and clinics in the hands of six companies - these now control 60% of the UK's pet-care market Whether this concentration has led to less market competition and allowed some vet care companies to make excess profits 'Hitting targets' A vet, who leads one of IVC's surgeries (and who does not want to be identified because they fear they could lose their job), has shared a new internal document with Panorama. The document uses a colour code to compare the company's UK-wide tests and treatment options and states that it is intended to help staff improve clinical care. It lists key performance indicators in categories that include average sales per patient, X-rays, ultrasound and lab tests. The vet is worried about the new policy: "We will have meetings every month, where one of the area teams will ask you how many blood tests, X-rays and ultrasounds you're doing." If a category is marked in green on the chart, the clinic would be judged to be among the company's top 25% of achievers in the UK. A red mark, on the other hand, would mean the clinic was in the bottom 25%. If this happens, the vet says, it might be asked to come up with a plan of action. The vet says this would create pressure to "upsell" services. Panorama: Why are vet bills so high? Are people being priced out of pet ownership by soaring bills? Watch on BBC iPlayer now or BBC One at 20:00 on Monday 12 January (22:40 in Northern Ireland) Watch on iPlayer For instance, the vet says, under the new model, IVC would prefer any animal with suspected osteoarthritis to potentially be X-rayed. With sedation, that could add £700 to a bill. While X-rays are sometimes necessary, the vet says, the signs of osteoarthritis - the thickening of joints, for instance - could be obvious to an experienced vet, who might prefer to prescribe a less expensive anti-inflammatory treatment. "Vets shouldn't have pressure to do an X-ray because it would play into whether they are getting green on the care framework for their clinic." IVC has told Panorama it is extremely proud of the work its clinical teams do and the data it collects is to "identify and close gaps in care for our patients". It says its vets have "clinical independence", and that prioritising revenue over care would be against the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons' (RCVS) code and IVC policy. Vets say they are under pressure to bring in more money per pet   Published 15 April 2025 Vets should be made to publish prices, watchdog says   Published 15 October 2025 The vet says a drive to increase revenue is undermining his profession. Panorama spoke to more than 30 vets in total who are currently working, or have worked, for some of the large veterinary groups. One recalls being told that not enough blood tests were being taken: "We were pushed to do more. I hated opening emails." Another says that when their small practice was sold to a large company, "it was crazy... It was all about hitting targets". Not all the big companies set targets or monitor staff in this way. The high cost of treatment UK pet owners spent £6.3bn on vet and other pet-care services in 2024 - equal to just over £365 per pet-owning household, according to the CMA. However, most pet owners in the UK do not have insurance, and bills can leave less-well-off families feeling helpless when treatment is needed. Many vets used not to display prices and pet owners often had no clear idea of what treatment would cost, but in the past two years that has improved, according to the CMA. Rob Jones has told Panorama that when his family dog, Betty, fell ill during the autumn of 2024 they took her to an emergency treatment centre, Vets Now, and she underwent an operation that cost almost £5,000. Twelve days later, Betty was still unwell, and Rob says he was advised that she could have a serious infection. He was told a diagnosis - and another operation - would cost between £5,000-£8,000.   Image caption, Betty's owners were told an operation on her would cost £12,000 However, on the morning of the operation, Rob was told this price had risen to £12,000. When he complained, he was quoted a new figure - £10,000. "That was the absolute point where I lost faith in them," he says. "It was like, I don't believe that you've got our interests or Betty's interests at heart." The family decided to put Betty to sleep. Rob did not know at the time that both his local vet, and the emergency centre, branded Vets Now, where Betty was treated, were both owned by the same company - IVC. He was happy with the treatment but complained about the sudden price increase and later received an apology from Vets Now. It offered him £3,755.59 as a "goodwill gesture".   Image caption, Rob Jones says he lost faith in the vets treating his pet dog Betty Vets Now told us its staff care passionately for the animals they treat: "In complex cases, prices can vary depending on what the vet discovers during a consultation, during the treatment, and depending on how the patient responds. "We have reviewed our processes and implemented a number of changes to ensure that conversations about pricing are as clear as possible." Value for money? Independent vet practices have been a popular acquisition for corporate investors in recent years, according to Dr David Reader from the University of Glasgow. He has made a detailed study of the industry. Pet care has been seen as attractive, he says, because of the opportunities "to find efficiencies, to consolidate, set up regional hubs, but also to maximise profits". Six large veterinary groups (sometimes referred to as LVGs) now control 60% of the UK pet care market - up from 10% a decade ago, according to the CMA, external. They are: Linnaeus, which owns 180 practices Medivet, which has 363 Vet Partners with 375 practices CVS Group, which has 387 practices Pets at Home, which has 445 practices under the name Vets for Pets IVC Evidensia, which has 900 practices When the CMA announced its provisional findings last autumn, it said there was not enough competition or informed choice in the market. It estimated the combined cost of this to UK pet owners amounted to £900m between 2020-2024. Corporate vets dispute the £900m figure. They say their prices are competitive and made freely available, and reflect their huge investment in the industry, not to mention rising costs, particularly of drugs. The corporate vets also say customers value their services highly and that they comply with the RCVS guidelines.   Image caption, A CMA survey suggests pet owners are happy with the service they receive from vets A CMA survey suggests pet owners are happy with their vets - both corporate and independent - when it comes to quality of service. But, with the exception of Pets at Home, customer satisfaction on cost is much lower for the big companies. "I think that large veterinary corporations, particularly where they're owned by private equity companies, are more concerned about profits than professionals who own veterinary businesses," says Suzy Hudson-Cooke from the British Veterinary Union, which is part of Unite. Proposals for change The CMA's final report on the vet industry is expected by the spring but no date has been set for publication. In its provisional report, it proposed improved transparency on pricing and vet ownership. Companies would have to reveal if vet practices were part of a chain, and whether they had business connections with hospitals, out-of-hours surgeries, online pharmacies and even crematoria. IVC, CVS and Vet Partners all have connected businesses and would have to be more transparent about their services in the future. Pets at Home does not buy practices - it works in partnership with individual vets, as does Medivet. These companies have consistently made clear in their branding who owns their practices. The big companies say they support moves to make the industry more transparent so long as they don't put too high a burden on vets. David Reader says the CMA proposals could have gone further. "There's good reason to think that once this investigation is concluded, some of the larger veterinary groups will continue with their acquisition strategies." The CMA says its proposals would "improve competition by helping pet owners choose the right vet, the right treatment, and the right way to buy medicine - without confusion or unnecessary cost". For Rob Jones, however, it is probably too late. "I honestly wouldn't get another pet," he says. "I think it's so expensive now and the risk financially is so great.             Food Terms of Use About the BBC Privacy Policy Cookies Accessibility Help Parental Guidance Contact the BBC Make an editorial complaint BBC emails for you Copyright © 2026 BBC.
