A large number of middle-class mothers are painfully rude and insular on a daily basis along the streets of LL and NCR and other streets around here. Sneering at anyone who selflessly is forced into the road by a large group of them blocking the pathway nattering away to one another about house prices or the cost of organic humus. Makes my blood boil. And the bizarre thing is, people see this happening regularly around here and rarely if ever confront these people. I'm with James on this.

In complete contrast to what you posted - which almost excatly says that. Tiresome, cliche ridden nonsense as Jimbo points out.

Quids I'm not going to go over old ground again. But you know damn well how infuriating these people can be and it's not "cliche ridden nonsense" if it is actually happening. Are you seriously telling me you've never come across a gang of these prams or even just two walking side by side along a narrow street? They do genuinely not give a toss about forcing people into the road. Yes they have children, but manners cost bugger all and why should elderly or disabled people be forced into the dangerous roads to satisfy the ego of a wealthy bankers wife?

Louisa.

James, Louisa - your posts reveal more about you than they do about the people you purport to know the minds of.

Louisa quite how you are qualified to assert that these middle-class mums force people in to the road to satisfy their ego, I do not know.

A quite extraordinary claim.

Ridiculous.

James...and if we are dealing in anectdote as fact I can't think that it's happened to be more with groups of mums with prams. than groups of:

- working class old ladies nattering in the street

- pissed up estate agents outside the EDT/Bishop

- Mixed race youths riding their bikes on the pavement

- kids with footballs

- polish builders having a fag outside a loft conversion

....just a bunch of idiotic cliches, to be frank

XIX maybe because I see them doing it? Maybe because I myself have been forced off the path on numerous occasions? If it wasn't an ego booster then why else would they do it? I rarely have the same problems with others. Are you saying because I have an opinion which differs to yours and may I add is based on real life experience, I am somehow not qualified to reach a conclusion about these people? I think those defending these Yummies are on shaky ground here.

Louisa.

Here we go again! Rudeness is to be found amongst all classes and walks of life. It has nothing to do with age or class.

And as for kids playing, really?

Lighten up! There are plenty of really important things that we should be iritated by, but younsters playing isn't one of them.

I can honestly say I've never been forced out of the way by a 'Yummy Mummy' with a pram. And what about all the working class mums and dads? There's plenty of them too. Do they doth their caps and let you pass? I sometimes step aside to let someone with a buggy pass rather that make them push their infant into the road. I think that's just being courteous and it's usually greeted with a smile.

Children playing while commuters walk past? This thread is going right off the crazy scale.

My simple point Louisa, which you have clearly failed to grasp, is that your statement that they do these things to satisfy their ego is nothing more than an ASSUMPTION. you do not know what they are thinking. If people sometimes obstruct a pavement with a pram, bike, shopping trolley or whatever, a far more likely and reasonable conlcusion to come to would be that it is probably absent-minded and unintentional, rather than an arrogant bankers-wife getting an ego-kick.

To make this a class issue is absurd.

Louisa, when I was a child I had a bicycle, a scooter, a space hopper. I lost count of the number of times I went home to have wounds dressed from falling off those things. I even one time slid down a plank only to stop halfway because a rusty nail that was sticking out had lodged itself in my bottom lol. I didn't feel it, but I sure felt the tetness injection I had as a result.

Children climb, explore and yes they fall over too. This idea that kids should be molly coddled and not let out of site is a new thing. Let kids be kids.

oh come on now jimbo, if people are making claims about being forced into the road they will be more than aware of the class type of the person hogging the narrow path. I know I can tell. I rarely come across working class parents locally these days, and as I said, my most common issue has been with yummies rarely with anyone else. Disproportionally the odds are stacked against the yummies cos they now outnumber the working class mothers with kids, but at the same time these people should be well educated and fully aware of manners or you'd like to think so? I often stand aside to let a mother and pram go by, of whatever class, but these are NOT the people I speak of, I speak of the nattering side by side loud posh people who just completely are in a world of their own and do not even acknowledge anyone else.

    • Post much better this Xmas.  Sue posted about whether they send Xmas cards; how good the post is,  is relevant.  Think I will continue to stay off Instagram!
    • These have reduced over the years, are "perfect" lives Round Robins being replaced by "perfect" lives Instagram posts where we see all year round how people portray their perfect lives ?    The point of this thread is that for the last few years, due to issues at the mail offices, we had delays to post over Christmas. Not really been flagged as an issue this year but I am still betting on the odd card, posted well before Christmas, arriving late January.
    • Two subjects here.  Xmas cards,  We receive and send less of them.  One reason is that the cost of postage - although interestingly not as much as I thought say compared to 10 years ago (a little more than inflation).  Fun fact when inflation was double digits in the 70s cost of postage almost doubled in one year.  Postage is not a good indication of general inflation fluctuating a fair bit.  The huge rise in international postage that for a 20g Christmas card to Europe (no longer a 20g price, now have to do up to 100g), or a cheapskate 10g card to the 'States (again have to go up to the 100g price) , both around a quid in 2015, and now has more than doubled in real terms.  Cards exchanged with the US last year were arriving in the New Year.  Funnily enough they came much quicker this year.  So all my cards abroad were by email this year. The other reason we send less cards is that it was once a good opportunity to keep in touch with news.  I still personalise many cards with a news and for some a letter, and am a bit grumpy when I get a single line back,  Or worse a round robin about their perfect lives and families.  But most of us now communicate I expect primarily by WhatApp, email, FB etc.  No need for lightweight airmail envelope and paper in one.    The other subject is the mail as a whole. Privitisation appears to have done it no favours and the opening up of competition with restrictions on competing for parcel post with the new entrants.  Clearly unless you do special delivery there is a good chance that first class will not be delivered in a day as was expected in the past.   Should we have kept a public owned service subsidised by the tax payer?  You could also question how much lead on innovation was lost following the hiving off of the national telecommunications and mail network.
