Well ,gossip or rubber necking ,I'm grateful for the thread .

My mum lives just off Rye Lane and being very elderly is getting a little muddled and anxious about things . She often hears noises in the night and wonders what they are ,details about incidents in the area help me relate to her .

She was recently convinced that a full scale rehearsal for evacuating the area in the event of flooding had taken place over night .

You might think that knowing there'd been a stabbing ,traffic accident or whatever is no help but at least I know there is often some real basis for her concerns .Sometimes I can even reassure her .

    • It’s full-on consumerism season now until, well, Easter probably.
    • Well thanks for enriching the conversation.  Would you chuck Fah - rage in too for his tax avoidance on his property?   I expect it was lead story on Jeremy Vine too.  Doesn't make it a story, just a bit more of BBC tabloid style sensationalism.  There are numerous real news stories in the UK and across the world.  And now, apt for Halloween, you have summoned up the ghost of Louisa. So for the third time, will you now eat humble pie?
    • It's firework season now up until early Jan 2026. Starting with celebrating the failure of terrorist Guy Fawkes on November 5th! BOOM!
    • Get used to it! 'major incidents' are a regular occurrence these days! some ignored by mainstream media.
