Anyone else on the 40 bus this morning (and other bus issues)

Recommended Posts

My time is to blackfriars. Add 20 on to moor gate. I walk up dog kennel. . Wal worth rd. Black friars rd. I did it 8 times in one week once but with no danny baker on the breakfast show its less attractive

I live by the plough as well so if you are closer to town it should be better

I think Sean must be a very fast walker - according to www.walkit.co.uk from my flat to Blackfriars (I am near the CPT) it's a 4.6 miles. At my walking pace that would be well over an hour - more like an hour and half.

I am probably a 7/10 on the fast-walking stakes. 4.6 miles seems excessive to me but it might be true. And I have cheated a little by not included time lost (even with experience) at E&C

But isn't 4 miles an hour considered walking-pace? I would have said a slightly faster than average walker would manage 4.6 miles closer to an hour.

In any case 60 minutes.. 90 minutes... just think of it as a gym session with a point

The buses today are infinitely better than they were 20/30 or even, as I remember, almost 40 years ago. I'll admit I don't use them during rush hours regularly, as I did once, but on the times I do I find them regular, relatively clean (considering how many people use them)and a very cheap way to get round London. It may not be the fastest but what is fast in London these days?
Yeah, alright, that was the best thing about buses, in the EDOlde days, upstairs was smoking. (packed up now being all healthy and PC as anyone who knows me will testify). 176 very good after a late night in Denmark St (or anywhere else in the West End for that matter) last time I went there, very entertaining, everyone on the bus, apart from the driver, trashed. I hate you Butler.

On Google Earth the route that SMG took is almost exactly 4 miles from Goose Green Roundabout to Blackfriars.

You could cut 200m off by cutting down Grove Lane to Camberwell rather than walking past Denmark Hill station and Kings.

hmmm same again this morning on the 176, was at the bus stop at 8 am, 176 didnt turn up until nearly 8.15 and then didnt stop as so full up! Fortunately another arrived withing 5 mins, also appearing very full in the standing area but with plenty of seats upstairs!?!?! I never have understood that!

Looks like I need to be catching the 176 an hour earlier to ensure a frequent service :( Or walk..... which is quite tempting!!!!!

First day back at work today after maternity leave, first foray back onto the 63 bus from Froest Hill to Farringdon Road. Young man entertained us as far as Peckham Rye station with very loud hip hop played through the speakers of his mobile phone. Even this short distance was enough to get my blood pressure soaring. Walking is looking more and more attractive....

Buses were bad this morning. I waited 10 minutes for a 185 which was already full when it reached Wood Vale and was only letting on as many folks as he'd let off. Took 30 minutes to get from there to Denmark Hill since took so long to get people off through the throng and then argue with the new people how many were going to get on.

Re the hip hop. I once, while admittedly under the influence of a little Dutch courage, asked the 'yoof' playing music what it was since I 'liked' it and pretended to try to bop along to it. He was so mortified that someone so uncool liked it, he turned it off! Mwa ha ha! Mission successful!

    • Every year they ask for more and every year it is an exhausting process pushing back on that for local residents and councillors. What annoys me is that at the post event consultation/ feedback this year, I specifically asked them if the rumours around applying for two weekends next year were true. They told me no. So that was a lie. Anyway, we go again.

    • Rant ahead: You're not one of them but unfortunately, there's a substrate of posters here that do very little except moan and come up with weird conspiracy theories. They're immediately highly critical of just about any change, and their initial assumption is that everyone else is a total fucking contemptible idiot. For example: don't you think that the people who run the libraries will have considered the impact of timing of reconstruction on library users? (In fact, we know they have - because they've made arrangements at other libraries to attempt to mitigate the disruption). After all, these are the people that spend their whole working week thinking about libraries and dealing with library users (and the kids especially). You don't go into the library game for the chicks and fame - so it's fair to assume that librarians are committed to public service and public access to libraries, including by kids. Likewise the built environment people (engineers, architects, construction managers, project managers, construction contractors, subcontractors or whoever is on this job) are told to minimise disruption on every job they do. The thing that occurs to us as amateurs within 30 seconds of us seeing something is probably not something a full time professional hasn't thought about! Southwark Council, the NHS, TfL, Dulwich Estate, Thames Water, Openreach - they're not SPECTRE factories filled with malevolent chaosmongers trying to persecute anyone. They're mostly filled with people who understand their job and try to do their best with what they've been given - just like all of us. Nobody is perfect or immune from challenge, and that's fair enough, but why not at least start from the assumption that there's a good reason why things have been done the way they have? Any normal person would be pleased that their busy, pretty, lively local library is getting refurbished, and will have more space and facilities for kids and teens, and will be more efficient to run and warmer in winter. But no, EDT_Forumite_752 had kids who did an exam 20 years ago, and this makes them an expert on library refurbishment who can see it's all just stuff and nonsense for the green agenda and why can't it all be put off... 😡😡😡
    • I completely misread the previous post, sorry. For some reason I thought the mini cooper was also a police vehicle, DUH.
