World Cup Football

Anybody know of a local pub with good beer planning to show World Cup games June/July? Just wanting to get organised.

I imagine, in short, most of them.

The Gowlett have inastalled a telly for the bog competitions in the past, I'm sure the EDT will be showing the games and a host of other places.

Its a pity Hoopers have gone, have very fond memories of their early morning world cup bacon sarnies during the rugby world cup.

I'm watching in Guyana and Brazil, fortunately not the England game.

When I am back home only one place to watch it is the Blythe Hill Tavern in Forest Hill.

The Castle's great for watching football but does however fall flat on the good beer front. However, they do serve the best Guinness around these parts.

I have no clue about the football, but I do think the EDT's one of the best pubs round here for beer. Always a couple of interesting beers on.

I've booked an event for 60 clients for the Costa Rica game as it's the only 5pm kick off in a work night. But just realised England have Italy and Uruguay before that - good luck with that! Now regretting it as nobody will turn up when you lot are out after two games.

It's just the misplaced arrogance Jah. And before the joker ???? posts vintage footage Ally's Army '78 we learned our lesson and got on with being a tiny country playing with passion and occasionally above our means.

We know our place but usually, to the amusement of many north of the border, England don't. This phenomena normally creates marginal value for the punter but even the bookies agree this time.

i think many years of indifferent performances has finally persuaded all but the fanatics that our mdeiocre achievements are actually generally punching above our weight!!

Expectation at all time low I'd say.

Hard to look past brasil anyway isn't it?

Trouble is the public at large by in to the tabloid hype. I think the 4 most like winners will come from Brasil, Germany, Argentina, or Spain.

But it's nice to see younger managers like Rogers and Martinex changing things up a bit in the prem and using some young English players. Not saying that means we'll win the next one, but hopefully we're at least gragging ourselves out of the footy dark ages.

Belgium look like the value outsider for this one.

But I don't ever recall a run up to a World Cup with such lack of enthusiasm all round...which is a pity.

From what I've read a fair percentage of Brazilians don't want the competition primarily because of the cost and how the money would be better spent elsewhere.

Just wait til the Qatari one!!!

Everyone will surely still enjoy a world festival of colour and football once it starts if Brasil can avoid a popular revolution and/or stadia collapses.

Perhaps though it's a reflection of the modern game (ie broader levels of fitness and professialism, coupled with closer media control) that there are fewer personalities or standout talents there to get excited about.

I for one am looking forward to this world cup JUST to enjoy one without fekkin vuvuzelas - ruined last one for me

I also think excitement will pick up once it approaches and people start planning "exotic" times to be drinking in the pub

If there is less excitement these days it could be the saturation of football generally coupled with the fact that once this was a rare opportunity to see unknown and amazing talent. These days, that talent is already known, paid for and playing on your TV every week
