what we had back then was TIME to play and invest in all these things

Honestly, gaming is much better these days. I sometimes pick up speedball 2, or kick off or any number of old games and the proustian rush is immense. But play them for any amount of time? Nah

My favourite arcade games from back in the day: Missile Command, Bombjack, Ghost n Goblins

Speccy/Amstrad: all of the ultimate games, rtype

Amiga: too many to mention. Playing proper 3d games for first time felt cool tho

All in all you're probably right, but when I was playing loads of old console games on my phone a while back there were some games that did make me think nothing feels this exciting anymore. Early Zelda games, Mario 2 & 3, Super Metroid (you can tell I was a Nintendo kid), and no fighting game will ever beat Street Fighter 2!

Yes Mario 64 was a HUGE step forward, and WOW!!!, But something about those 8 / 16bit games was just great, because they couldn't rely on pretty graphics and sound to make you feel like you were there.

I agree entirely with StraferJack. We are quite lucky in that respect. As we get older, at least when it comes to gaming, things gets better. It can take time for things to improve though, I am finding the line-up for the Playstation 4 and Xbox One pretty insipid at the moment, but I'm sure it will improve...

Ha, I knew there were a group of you who would enjoy this thread! Good trip down memory lane, I remember so many of the games you talk about. Time was key, I would still enjoy sitting down and playing games, but life just doesn't allow it these days.

Will we be a new generation of retirees 20/30-odd years from now? My 70 year old father in law sits all day reading his beloved Scotsman newspaper from cover to cover, I don't see myself doing that, but reliving teenage gaming is on my list!

atari 2600 -> zx81 -> bbc b -> atari lynx -> snes -> n64 -> playstation -> PC -> dreamcast -> gamecube -> PS2 -> xbox -> xbox 360 -> ipad -> phones -> PC

I guess there's some concurrency going on there, and spent much time on mates' speccys and megadrives.

Haven't plumped on my next gen yet, but no rush as only really beginning to get any mileage out of my entertainment room, and for the most part that's snatches of music and a good book so far (though i have reembarked on baldurs gate on ipad and Fallout 3).

weirdly enjoying ninja revenge on phone as current toilet game.

Amstrad CPC 464, NES, SNES (although I was ALWAYS round my mate George's house playing megadrive too), N64, Fling with PC '98-'00, Gamecube (thanks Mockers), Wii, Xbox 360, Phones.

Also played a lot of original play station and PS2 at my mate George's gaff. I basically used to be round his most evenings throughout school and early to mid 20s.

kids, wife and 3 hour gaming sessions? not possible without thatcher like requirements for sleep.

hence why most of my gaming is quick fix, touch screen based these days.

Still manage the odd bit here and there and it gets easier the less your kids need you. Soon they'll be locking themselves in their room for days on end and i'll be free, free to do what i want, then I'm gonna get [chuckie egg] loaded [up], i'm gonna have a good time!!!

Yes, I own slippers.

Still, there's a beer fridge in teh entertainment room, though I may skip on the pills and trips these days.

    • Oh now you're coming over all defensive. What happened to the nice Sue, because since the early part of the year your approach seems to have changed and you've become much more challenging. No you have not broken any rules and even if you had why would I involve Admin, that's a ludicrous thing to say.  Take care Sue.
    • I was the opposite of you. I never felt particularly happy around Brixton late at night - I didn't know it that well. Do you remember the name of the late- night Irish pub opposite the railway arches near the BR station? Was it Mulligan's? Brannigan's? To be fair, until the East London Line extension, Rye Lane walking south wasn't a favourite of mine after dark either. The only pub left on there was The Hope, which was in the other direction. It felt very bleak. I think that makes a huge difference. When The Gowlett was boarded up, Adys Road felt very different. It's like a beacon now. Pub violence does seem to have had its day in inner London. Maybe it's a result of the disappearance of pool tables, flat-roofed pubs and cheap Stella offers. I bet you could still find a Saturday night kick-up in New Addington or the  Becontree estate in Dagenham. Definitely. Pubs next to stations, kebab shops and ironically named nightclubs are all to be avoided in smaller places. The weirdest place I've ever had random trouble was in a club in St. Ives in Cambridgeshire.  I think it was called 'Options'. It was the only club there.  See also 'Jekylls' nightclub in Hyde, Manchester - a truly dreadful place where getting thrown out for fighting was infinitely preferable to spending the evening in there and coming out stinking of stale chip fat. I took a kicking in 'Kingsway Kebabs' in Swansea after a night in 'The Aviary' (so named because it was 'full of birds') nightclub. But that wasn't so random. It was a local girl, who gave me a leathering because I'd run off for a large chicken doner, rather than dance with her to 'Criticize' by Alexander O'Neal. Sorry, Sue, I've digressed a little.  To answer your question, I think London feels relatively safe overall.
    • I’m happy to report that I got a much earlier prescription review than the 22 September.  Not sure what that was down to but I was sent a text to say to expect a telephone call on a certain day and time for earlier this week.  It was with a pharmacist and not a doctor.  I was later told to expect a telephone call on call on both the 19 and 23 September.  They are really pushing the boat out. Not complaining. Also, Dr. Shivji is back working.
    • "Firing"? "Demanding"? A "habit on here of 'demanding' answers"?  Crikey. I didn't say you "should" do anything! This is a forum.  For discussion. I will say whatever I like and ask whatever I like,  within the forum rules, as can anybody else  Please move your issues with me to the thread I have started in the lounge on feeling safe in London, because this is a thread about a burglary in Lacon Road. If you continue to post your complaints about me on this thread, I shall not respond, so do feel free. Or if you think I have broken any forum rules, do feel free to report me to admin.
