Jah- I think Caffeine Addict has every intention of getting out more - when he/she actually moves to the area any day now

Caffeine Addict - a quick google will reveal the location of most of thos pubs mentioned, or you could have a peek in

Snorky, sometimes of this parish, has written some very entertaining reviews on the latter site

I briefly lived in Basingdon Way, and I heard rumours of a "characterful" pub in the nearby area. I guess this must be it.

EDOldie seems to be a fan of this place and The Castle, could I deduce that the two places are cut from the same cloth?

As ever we have widely differing views as to where we should go - and many thanks for the ideas.

We did say some time ago that we would try and alternate ED venues with ED fringe venues and we would try and include pubs and bars. Logically as Hoopers is ED Fringe then the next venue should be in ED, equally we havent been in a Bar for some time.

T'Social Committee are pondering and will make a decision in the very near future, because someboy has to.

Our suggestion for next year is that we come up with a 12 month rota of dates and venues. This will include ED and ED fringe venues, a range of hostelry types and will take into account the practicalities of travel, the season (venues with Gardens seem sensible in the Summer, being hopeful) and the mainstream appeal of places. What do you think of that idea?

Once completed is there anywhere on the Forum the rota could be placed for reference purposes?

The Greendale had a certain reputation, shared by many council estate pubs, of being a bit rough around the edges.

Oriwisu spot now reflects much the new demographic of the greendale estate of being a Nigerian pub, and seemed as safe as any pub I've been to in ED.

It's a bit cheap formica, with carpet that can set your hair alight if you're wearing polyester, but the staff are friendly, the clientele vary between welcoming to nonplussed at a bunch of strangers in their pub.

But the beer is fine and damnably cheap, and it has a pool table and isn't averse to a gold old lock-in.

This seems to be an ongoing and significant issue. I therefore propose that, the Social Committee form a Sub-Committee responsible for the venue rota for the monthly booze up. The Sub-Committee should then set up a Working Group for each month who will submit a shortlist of 3 venues to the Sub-Committee for approval one month prior to the booze up for which they are responsible. The Sub-Committee will then rate the three venues in order of preference before submitting them for approval to the Social Committee.

The Social Committee will then commission a Life-Panel for each suggested venue. The Life-Panels will take advice from the other Sub-Committees which will also have to be established such as, The Sub-Committee for Seasonal Affairs, The Sub-Committee for the Availability of Draught Beer, The Sub-Committee for the Variety of Draught Beer, The Wine List and Nibbles Sub-Committee, The Overall Scrumminess Sub-Committee and the Sub-Committee for the Avoidance of Unnecessary Bureaucracy (a sub-committee to an overarching group called The Advisory Panel on Ostentatious Officialdom or A POO)

The Life-Panels will them make a final recommendation on the suitability of each suggested venue to the Social-Committee who by this time will have fallen out with everyone and gone to the Wishing Well.

    • Excellent, I hope so!
    • It's certainly a risky strategy, as well as ticking everyone off, the gazunderer risks losing the property and also their costs incurred during the process e.g. legal & survey. It's hard to mitigate against but I always think that if you're desperate to sell, don't ever convey that  to your estate agent, as that info more than likely gets passed on to potential buyers. You should be doing that regardless of whether gazundering is happening or not, as it will affect the offers you receive... That's correct. Some agents have policies in place to 'discourage' gazundering and gazumping, but ultimately it comes down to the morals of the buyer...
    • The owner may not be on this forum. Maybe you should let the police know you have it, in case the owner has reported it as stolen? Also, are you sure the owner hadn't just left it there temporarily while going into their house, or putting their bike away or getting it out? What street was it in?
    • For these places to be good they have to be mega efficient: high volume high speed like the one in Camberwell next to Stormbird.  If you can't hit that sort of tipping point you end up having to cut corners and you enter a sort of death spiral.  The one at the south end of Lordship Lane near Joseph's is fairly hopeless.
