Barry Road parade

Does anybody know what's happening or happened to the shops opposite The Clockhouse at the Peckham Rye end of Barry Road. The pizza place, Chinese and Indian takeaways are all closed and have been for a while - the cooker of Yee Wah was in the front of the shop and it was FILTHY! The Estate Agents and Barbers are still open, but just wondering if any plans have been made - it could be a lovely parade, but it looks so grim at the moment.

Thanks

I spoke to the guy from the barbers. There was a plan for a Sainsbury Local some time ago, but no news recently. Apparently the chinese, indian and pizza takeaways all closed for different reasons, were boarded up to prevent squatting, and now can't or won't be re-let because the landlord will only offer a very short lease, in case an opportunity comes up to re-develop. The leases of businesses still in occupation can only be terminated if there is a firm plan to re-develop, but there's nothing firm at the moment. Frustrating for all (not least the barbers) because the parade looks rubbish and there's no immediate prospect of anything changing

I doubt Sainsburys would open such a big store at that end of Barry Road with the other Sainsbury's on Dog Kennel Hill so nearby.

With so many retailers around Upland Road becoming shops (PlanNation, Police Station Unit, Drycleaners, Hairdressers etc.) I expect that this parade will too become flats. Possibly some of the pavement will become forecourt.

That would make most commercial sense.

I agree about the takeaways, but heavens above a local supermarket? What's wrong with Barry's just a few yards further up the road ? 😄

Hopefully this post will put an end to rude ignorant people barging into my shop demanding that i tell them what is going on with the units on Barry Parade, while I'm working.

All the shops on Barry Parade are owned by one Landlord. Yes.. He was approached by Sainsburys and they were going to redevelope but that fell through. He is now going to redevelope the Parade himself but not for a year or two. He has to get plans drawn up and planning etc. etc.

Nobody was asked to leave...Everyone left on their own accord for different reasons.

The shops are not been relet as they are in a bad state of repair.

Workmen are taking down the parapet walls at the moment because the Landlord was worried they would fall because they are leaning forward. They are then putting up a nice hoarding to make the Parade look decent till he decides what to do.

So at the moment 3 successful bussiness remain trading on Barry Parade.... The Neighbour Hood Vets.. Roy Brooks estate agents and Barry Road Barbers

Thanking you Sean... Barry Road Barbers

It's still there but if you were placed inside you would not recognise were you were..

    • There's probably a bigger discussion on why we celebrate Christmas (pagan/religious festival) and why everything has to shut down.  I've enjoyed Xmas days in Spain, Mexico and France where some businesses and restaurants are open, and in a number of non-Christrian countries.  In both sets of occasions it has been festive, but not over the top and the Spanish seem to have a more relaxed attitude in a country where the church is probably more important than the UK.  A Lounge conversation.  I'll no doubt be popping into the Forest Hill Road supermarket on Xmas day for things we have forgotten, with many others in a similar situation who grew up in the Christian faith (I've long since been an atheist).

    • I’m not a Gail’s fan but there’s no reason a business shouldn’t open on Christmas Day. However, nobody should be compelled to work the day which, given the widespread coverage of Gail’s questionable employment practices, has to be a possibility here.  The only business I ever use on the 25th is maybe a pub and that’s a rarity these days but buses running would be very welcome for visiting etc. But the swings in the park should definitely remain chained up. Are parks even open on Christmas Day?
    • To be honest, pal, it's not good being a fan of a local business and then not go there. One on hand, the barber shop literally next door to Romeo Jones started serving coffee. The Crown and Greyhound and Rocca serve coffee. Redemption Coffee opened up not far away, and then also Megan's next door to that. DVillage was serving coffee (but wasn't very popular), as was Au Ciel (which is). Maybe also Heritage Cheese, I don't know. There's also Flotsam and Jetsam doing coffee and sandwiches at Dulwich Picture Gallery in the other direction. The whole of Dulwich Village serves coffee. And yet on the other hand, there are enough punters to support all good coffee shops. With the exception of Rocca and Megan's (which are both big spaces) and C&G (which does coffee like everything else - slow and with bad service), all these places regularly get queues out the door. Gail's often has big queues and yet very few people crossed the street to Romeo Jones (which was much better)... Half the staff at Gail's are perfectly fine and efficient. The other half are pretty offhand and rude. It's certainly not welcoming or friendly service. But they're certainly hard working, and no doubt raking the money in for Luke Johnson...
