seriously Tony you paranoid maniac - go into the autocorrect options on Word and you'll see it, right there sorry, you're not a maniac, but have you had too much coffee this morning?

Please do NOT make assumptions about me!

Firstly I might well BE a "maniac"

Secondly I don't drink Coffee(6)

btw: How come many Ladies have texted me saying "teh" instead of "the"...that can't be autocorrect can it or am I being Paranoid (again!)....

Anyway I'M NOT PARANOID ALL RIGHT(!)

WHO SAID I AM,eh?:X:X

Teh instead of the is really common. I do it and I have a good typing speed with plenty of experience. It's just one of those weird things that's really common and probably something to do with your fingers not quite being able to keep up with your brain.

But Tony, I assure you, it is just a very common typo.

Er,2 actually...

In fact not "2" loads and loads..too many to mention, let alone count in one night...

Have just sat down for a quick forum-skim and have come across this thread. I get that text speak is annoying, but "the" vs "teh" is not text speak, it's just a typo: same three letters, put in the wrong order. Yes? So if this thread is about text speak and why that is annoying then fair play, if it is about "why is a certain typo so common" then give over you daft sod.

Fascinating reply.

Completely and utterly and totally illogical but fascinating I'll grant you.

So allow this daft sod to ask you bignumber5 why this oh-so-common typo which occurs again and again almost never occurred, say 4/5 years ago?

I eagerly await your reply:)

One more point BN5 is how come anyone rarely sees another very common word "and" never or rarely spelt "adn" if your point was that its the "same three letters, put in the wrong order"...why is this "typo" non-existent(almost) to use just one other example.

Well Bignumber5 and RosieH (the other contributors were polite so ignore this)

"Teh is an INTERNET SLANG neologism most frequently used as an English article, based on a common misspelling of the. A common typographical error, this typo BECAME A PART OF INTERNET SLANG and subsequently developed grammatical usages distinct from the.[1] It is not common in spoken or written English outside technical or leetspeak circles, but when spoken, it is pronounced /tə/".....

Now Bignumber5 I may well be a daft sod,as you so eloquently and loquaciously put it but the above definition seems to this daft sod to defintely say that "teh" IS INTERNET SLANG, i.e. Used on The Internet DELIBERATELY by some....

So teh question really BN5 ..who is the daft sod now me old mucker(tu)

glad to see you took that so well - first chucking a collosal tantrum about it being a common typo, then nipping back half an hour later with a new definition and reviewed perspective. Slow night in the burbs? ;-)

Why is it more common? I'd imagine that more people are being coaxed into the world of text and internet life but can't type. As for the status of "teh" as an internet neologism with its own separate meaning, I was not aware of it so I thank you, the forum and the internet in general for educating me.

PS - I have just had to correct the typo of "hte" - is that a further, different neologistic definite article with established rules of use, or am I just crap at typing?

Sorry, I seem to have your response to this..

Actually RosieH RosieH RosieH perhaps you could explain why other words in regular usage like "and" and "are" aer (did U see what I did there) not in any significant numbers subject to "Typo's"

Everytime I try to reply to the above the "system" won't allow me to print what I wrote so I'm seeing if this gets thru'...:))

Tony Tony Tony, are you dirty dialling technical and leetspeak ladies?

This is interesting news to me about the new neologism stuff, and I don't know what you do for a living, but given the definition you give above, I'd be very surprised if that was the cause for the new prevalence you speak of. Is a little niche, no?

I.literally,don't know what U R talking about(as usual).;-)..

As a simple person, my point was a simple one in that some people are CHOOSING to use "teh" instead of "the" and that Wikipedia definition that I looked up does clearly say that this phrase IS part of "Internet Slang", which would imply that I am right, wouldn't it?

The definition you gave said that "teh" was limited to technical and leetspeak circles.

From this I concluded:

a) the many many ladies you have been late night texting are possibly computer programmers (winky face)

b) unless you yourself and all your friends are techies, it seems unlikely that the prevalence you speak of is due to new neologism which "is not common in spoken or written English outside technical or leetspeak circles"

Why has "hte" or "teh" become more common? Simply because emails, internet forums, etc have become more commonplace. We used to think of any typed text as being in some way formal (some people still send me emails formatted as if they were writing a letter), but over time it has become less formal. Because of this, people will often type quickly, and "fire and forget", rather than carefully proof-reading and checking spelling and grammar. I would suggest that an email (along with SMS) has become possibly the least formal method of communiction. Also as computers, email and internet have invaded our lives more and more, people have become faster and more "ambitious" in their typing.

Why do people mis-spell "the" more frequently than other words? Partly because the letters are all close together on the keyboard. And partly because it's the most common word (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Most_common_words_in_English) so we tend to type it in "autopilot" mode.

I blame Labour in no small part for this delusion. But the electorate need to cop on as well.  They think they can have everything they want without responsibilities, costs or attachments. The media encourage this  Labour do need to raise taxes. The country needs it.  Now, exactly how it’s done remains to be seen. But if people are just going to go around going “la la laffer curve. Liars! String em up! Vote someone else” then they just aren’t serious people reckoning with the problem yes Labour are more than a year into their term, but after 14 years of what the Tories  did? Whoever takes over, has a major problem
    • Messaging, messaging, messaging. That's all it boils down to. There are only so many fiscal policies out there, and they're there for the taking, no matter which party you're in. I hate to say it, but Farage gets it right every time. Even when Reform reneges on fiscal policy, it does it with enough confidence and candidness that no one is wringing their hands. Instead, they're quietly admired for their pragmatism. Strangely, it's exactly the same as Labour has done, with its manifesto reverse on income tax, but it's going to bomb.  Blaming the Tories / Brexit / Covid / Putin ... none of it washes with the public anymore  - it wants to be sold a vision of the future, not reminded of the disasters of the past. Labour put itself on the back foot with its 'the tories fucked it all up' stance right at the beginning of its tenure.  All Lammy had to do (as with Reeves and Raynor etc) was say 'mea culpa. We've made a mistake, we'll fix it. Sorry guys, we're on it'. But instead it's 'nothing to see here / it's someone else's fault / I was buying a suit / hadn't been briefed yet'.  And, of course, the press smells blood, which never helps.  Oh! And Reeve's speech on Wednesday was so drab and predictable that even the journalists at the press conference couldn't really be arsed to come up with any challenging questions.

    • I am keeping my fingers crossed the next few days are not so loud. I honestly think it is the private, back garden displays that are most problematic as, in general, there is no way of knowing when and where they might happen. For those letting off a few bangers in the garden I get it is tempting to think what's the harm in a few minutes of 'fun', but it is the absolute randomness of sudden bangs that can do irreparable damage to people and animals. With organised events that are well advertised there is some forewarning at least, and the hope is that organisers of such events can be persuaded to adopt and make a virtue of using only low noise displays in future.
