Teh instead of the is really common. I do it and I have a good typing speed with plenty of experience. It's just one of those weird things that's really common and probably something to do with your fingers not quite being able to keep up with your brain.

But Tony, I assure you, it is just a very common typo.

So its autopilot or whatever its called but just one teensy-weensy thing....a few years ago I never heard or saw anyone use "teh" instead of "the" and in the last 2/3 years its prevalent.

Why is that then?

Have just sat down for a quick forum-skim and have come across this thread. I get that text speak is annoying, but "the" vs "teh" is not text speak, it's just a typo: same three letters, put in the wrong order. Yes? So if this thread is about text speak and why that is annoying then fair play, if it is about "why is a certain typo so common" then give over you daft sod.

I had an appensix today. But I can see what happened there. I'm with Tony though, "teh" doesn't make sense. Having never come across it myself, I can only think that it's a personal vendetta against TLS.

One more point BN5 is how come anyone rarely sees another very common word "and" never or rarely spelt "adn" if your point was that its the "same three letters, put in the wrong order"...why is this "typo" non-existent(almost) to use just one other example.

Why is it more common? I'd imagine that more people are being coaxed into the world of text and internet life but can't type. As for the status of "teh" as an internet neologism with its own separate meaning, I was not aware of it so I thank you, the forum and the internet in general for educating me.

PS - I have just had to correct the typo of "hte" - is that a further, different neologistic definite article with established rules of use, or am I just crap at typing?

Actually RosieH RosieH RosieH perhaps you could explain why other words in regular usage like "and" and "are" aer (did U see what I did there) not in any significant numbers subject to "Typo's"

This is interesting news to me about the new neologism stuff, and I don't know what you do for a living, but given the definition you give above, I'd be very surprised if that was the cause for the new prevalence you speak of. Is a little niche, no?

As a simple person, my point was a simple one in that some people are CHOOSING to use "teh" instead of "the" and that Wikipedia definition that I looked up does clearly say that this phrase IS part of "Internet Slang", which would imply that I am right, wouldn't it?

Why has "hte" or "teh" become more common? Simply because emails, internet forums, etc have become more commonplace. We used to think of any typed text as being in some way formal (some people still send me emails formatted as if they were writing a letter), but over time it has become less formal. Because of this, people will often type quickly, and "fire and forget", rather than carefully proof-reading and checking spelling and grammar. I would suggest that an email (along with SMS) has become possibly the least formal method of communiction. Also as computers, email and internet have invaded our lives more and more, people have become faster and more "ambitious" in their typing.

Why do people mis-spell "the" more frequently than other words? Partly because the letters are all close together on the keyboard. And partly because it's the most common word (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Most_common_words_in_English) so we tend to type it in "autopilot" mode.
