Not sure if this has been discussed elsewhere, but given it's human nature to veer off topic every now and then maybe someone could invent a little "off topic widget" for the forum which allows us to take our conversations elsewhere easily e.g. the Lounge - automatically creating a link for us to our meanderings.

Some wikis make it easy to create a new page using some or other syntax such as double square brackets. Maybe there could be an equivalent in the forum world. Maybe there already is and I just haven't come across it.

Hi

Do you mean making it easier for people to say, "let's discuss this in the lounge" and start a new thread in the lounge area? So perhaps giving people a new button that says "start a new discussion in the lounge" on every post which would then take them directly to a new topic in the lounge area with the title (originally xxxx post). Otherwise giving people the option to split a thread would be dangerous, best left in the hands of The Administrator. Could you show me a link to a wiki that does what you say so I'm clear about what you mean?

One of the problems is that people don't actually realise they're going off topic, they're just having a conversation. Lots of people do say things like "best get this back on topic" but there are some who converse directly with others about things irrelevant to the thread which is annoying for the majority of users and the Administrator steps in to control these. It's a judgement call that cannot be left to the users as a whole and I think The Administrator's about to have a bit of a crackdown.

thanks

Yes, now I've had time to ponder this I'm not sure it would work.

I've seen wikis where you can put a word in camelCase and it will create a link and a destination based on the word you type. Also seen a wiki where you can type [[somethingindoublebrackets]] whic turns it in to a link and a destination.

    • Thanks! I'll find out in a few weeks when I get the results! It was one of those disconcerting things where a disembodied voice keeps booming  at you to breathe in and hold it, then breathe normally. Apart from that it was OK, all completely painless. I imagine there will be quite a few people going from ED, though I presume it covers the whole Southwark area
    • Two men behind ‘senseless’ felling of Sycamore Gap tree jailed for more than four years Good to see these two jailed today for four years. There’s something deeply disturbing about people who destroy trees—any tree. Whether it’s a centuries-old landmark or a sapling in a quiet park, trees are living beings that offer beauty, shade, and life. The men who cut down the Sycamore Gap tree are a stark example of how far some people will go to lash out at something peaceful and meaningful. People who harm nature like this aren’t just destructive—they are often deeply unhappy. It takes a troubled mind to look at a tree and see something to ruin instead of something to protect. • What a brilliant idea. I hope it went OK, Sue.
    • Yes, the appointments were scheduled for every ten minutes. And there is no waiting area at all this time  (sometimes for medical checks there they have a very small area inside with 3 or 4 seats). If you have come by public transport, you have to sit on the steps up to the van if you are early,  which isn't pleasant in very hot sun or pouring rain, or else wander round Asda (there's no cafe in Asda, despite it supposedly being a superstore). It's one in, one out. I don't know what happens if you are late, but I doubt they would hold up everybody who came after you in order to fit you in.  There was someone immediately before me and someone immediately after me. That's what I did in the end , so thank you for that.  I gritted my teeth and got some exercise. It wasn't as bad as I expected 😀 I did get a 37 from Nigel Road back to Goose Green on the return journey, though!
