  1. No probs. I do get quite enthusiastic about things sometimes, but I'm certainly not a pusher. I'm also well aware that Twitter isn't for everyone. Some people very enthusiastically tell me how much they hate it, or at least the idea of it, and can't see the point. Rest assured, if I was in any way affiliated with any company's product or service I would declare it.
  2. SteveT, no hard feelings. It just felt like a bit of a sting after I'd spent some time thinking how to describe what twitter is. I think Chico the Dog may be just what you're looking for :)

SteveT - I really hope you don't treat everyone on the East Dulwich Forum like that. It might put people off posting.
  4. Twitter is used in many different ways. As dulwichmum says, its nearest equivalent that people are familiar with is Facebook status updates. Twitter updates, or "tweets" as they are sometimes called, are limited in length to 140 characters. Apart from that, there are no rules about how to use Twitter. Some people use it to share ideas, thoughts and links or to ask questions. You can choose whether to make your updates public or private. If you think someone is saying something interesting you can "follow" them, which subscribes you to their updates, which will appear on your Twitter homepage. You can see who other people are following and who's following them. Well known people on Twitter include Stephen Fry, Imogen Heap, Andy Murray, Barack Obama (very quiet since he won the election). Companies use Twitter to send out updates about their products and services and answer customers' questions. Even Tower Bridge has an account on Twitter, which sends out a tweet whenever the bridge is opening or closing. There is a growing number of Twitter tools available to write, read and manage your updates, including apps for the iPhone. One of the first and still one of the best applications I've seen is Twittervision - which overlays tweets from Twitter on a google map of the world, so you get to see where people are when they tweet something.
  5. Who else here is on Twitter? You can follow mentions of Dulwich (or anything else) at http://search.twitter.com/search?q=dulwich FWIW I'm at http://twitter.com/nicprice
  6. An M&S simply food opposite Somerfields? I think there was a clue in there somewhere.

That's what the owner told me on my first visit a wee while back. Will check for original story/research source next time I go as I'm not sure it was originally the Grauniad. :)
  9. Other East Dulwich blue plaques... - Percy Lane Oliver, founder of the first voluntary blood donor service - C.S. Forester, novelist - Boris Karloff (born William Henry Pratt), actor - Phyllis Pearsall, creator of the London A-Z Along with Enid Blyton, I think that's the lot. Anyone know any more?
  10. Yes, Enid Blyton born here. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/21/27816000_e8f0bedac0_m.jpg
  11. Good espresso. Excellent mango ice cream. And in case you're wondering why it's called 2050...

[...] "Blanking" eh? Brings a new meaning to drawing a blank. Where's Blanksie when you need him? And that colour. It's gruesome.
  13. How about a text ordering service for people who can't come in? Seriously.
  14. Once someone asked me "If you died would your Facebook "friends" come to your funeral." I said I doubt it because I wouldn't be able to update my status - so how would they know I'd left this mortal coil. Nor would I be able to invite people to my funeral.
  15. Now I've got that dreadful themetune running round my head, thanks Bob! ;-)
  16. That is brilliant! Thank you so much triders, that's made my day :)) Reunited A happy ending thanks to the wonders of modern technology and the EDF - thanks Mark :)
  17. Bit of a longshot I realise and not the end of the world, but if anyone comes across this boot's left half I know a young lad who'd be very very happy :-) It was lost this evening around 6pm somewhere on Lordship Lane - [Edit] Goodrich Road, Barry Road, Silvester Road, Whately Road.
  18. Why not report it on fillthathole? It's a website where you can use Google maps to report and pinpoint the exact location of a hole in the road or any other hazard that should be fixed.
  19. I'm a Goodrich parent and pretty happy with things. However, I don't feel totally on top of what's going on and find the current set up quite difficult to understand in terms of who to talk to about finding things out or getting things done. I don't know if it's the same at Heber. It sounds like it is form some of the posts in this conversation. The weekly newsletters from the head at Goodrich are useful - what would be really good is if they could go online somewhere so that parents can follow up on the points in them. I'm sure it could cut down on calls and emails and visits to the school office if the most common questions could be answered publicly. Like "Will the line ups still happen during a torrential downpour?" Or, "Can you tell me the dates of the inset days next term?" I've written to the school office to offer my help in the school's general use of the internet for communication - I've been told there's a new website on the way... hopefully that'll give us a way of communicating more directly with the people with the answers.

Must admit I did a double-take when I saw the JUDE flyers on the tables. The caf?'s called Caf? on the Rye. It's open 9am - 4pm seven days a week. Nero - the graffiti's been painted over - must have been something you wrote ;-)
  21. The shutters are up. Keep Monday 12th free :-)
  22. A couple of years ago I went round finding and photographing our local blue plaques which you can see via this link. Since then about 25 of Boris Karloff's possible descendants have added comments, trying to find out if they are in any way related to William Henry Pratt. I still need to get a photo of Edgar Kail's blue plaque. The only Eva I can find in connection with East Dulwich was a famous apiculturist called Eva Crane (n?e Widdowson) who had a sister called Elsie May.
  23. Tim, really sorry to hear that. Will keep fingers crossed for good news.
  24. Big big thanks to Mark for an excellent evening. Really good to meet people I've known online for a while now. "Do you post?" must be up there with "Do you come here often?" ;-)
  25. The previous set up may have worked for you. I know of quite a few people, particularly parents with young children and pushchairs, who hated it and found it dangerous. There are plenty of other places where children can practice their zebra crossing skills. I don't think this one was a particularly good example.
