  1. That looks like a good route AndrewP, I'll give it a go. I cycle to the Media Centre up Wood Lane most days and put this route up in another thread on the forum. It's anywhere between 45 and 55 minutes depending on conditions and has the same final stretch after Hyde Park Corner.
  2. Pierre that is rough, I'm really sorry to read that. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
  3. mockney - I hadn't tried that search That's really got me chuckling - there are worse photos of me I suppose :)
  4. I can't remember how to do the clustery thing on Flickr to get East Dulwich and trees tags combined, but Matthew Black's photos tagged East Dulwich include quite a few of branchy leafy things.

It always felt like a harder effort and seemed to take just as long. I'm sure I clocked up more than 9 miles though so maybe I didn't go the best way. Did you use the cycle routes along the way?
  6. I hate driving across that crossing so much I go out of my way to avoid it. A couple of years ago my wife was nudging out from Underhill Road (heading south) to see if it was safe to cross and was hit by a car coming down Barry Road (towards the Rye). Plenty of damage, fortunately nobody hurt. Cars seem to drive pretty fast on that part of Barry Road. I think you're right about the double-yellows as a good start. What I don't understand is why there can't be traffic lights and a proper junction. The traffic light pedestrian crossing is a help, but it hasn't stopped the car crashes. How to go about lobbying for something to be done?
  7. citizen - there should be a cafe on the way in time for this summer (though that seems to have already arrived), and there's ?100k to sort out the derelict paddling pool nearby (on the east side of the common) - good news :-) Here's some info I found about the cafe tender a year or so ago.
  8. Pierre... (not a great picture, my camera was on its last legs), but here's the fire brigade dowsing those flames.
  9. Hi Klaus, it's fairly scenic - taking in lots of great tourits attractions! Down the west side of Peckham Rye to Rye Lane and then between Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse there's a cycle path up to the Old Kent Road marked "quiet route". Then up to Elephant along Old and New Kent Roads - can be a bit hairy (in fact I had an accident at the junction with Surrey Square last year). From Elephant up past Lambeth North tube and up to and over Westminster Bridge, round Parliament Square and through to Horseguards. Then up the Mall to Buckingham Palace, then up Constitution Hill and across Hyde Park Corner in to Hyde Park. Through Hyde Park and in to Kensington Gardens by Serpentine Gallery. Out of the park and left on to Bayswater Road then through Notting Hill Gate down Holland Park Avenue round Shepherds Bush Green and up Wood Lane. Here's a link to the route using Gmaps Pedometer - which tells me it's 11.3 miles - my speedo says 11.5 which I tend to round up to 12 - as I was always taught in maths :-)
  10. I find it easier to keep track of what I have and haven't read on the forum using an RSS aggregator like netvibes or bloglines or use a browser like Firefox to subscribe to the East Dulwich Forum RSS feed.

    Off topic

Yes, now I've had time to ponder this I'm not sure it would work. I've seen wikis where you can put a word in camelCase and it will create a link and a destination based on the word you type. Also seen a wiki where you can type [[somethingindoublebrackets]] whic turns it in to a link and a destination.

    Off topic

Not sure if this has been discussed elsewhere, but given it's human nature to veer off topic every now and then maybe someone could invent a little "off topic widget" for the forum which allows us to take our conversations elsewhere easily e.g. the Lounge - automatically creating a link for us to our meanderings. Some wikis make it easy to create a new page using some or other syntax such as double square brackets. Maybe there could be an equivalent in the forum world. Maybe there already is and I just haven't come across it.
  13. It would be great to have an ED-based place to get my bicycle serviced. My commute is around 24 miles per day so I should be getting a regular service but distance (ergo hassle) to get to places that do services means I don't do it and I don't do enough myself. I'd imagine there'd be quite a market round here given the number of people I see commuting from, through and to East Dulwich.
  14. East Dulwich to White City 45-55 minutes cycle: variations due to weather, traffic and condition of cyclist! 60-80 minutes Bus, Tube, Tube: 63 to Elephant, Bakerloo to Oxford Circus, Central to White City - anything from 65-80 minutes each way - good for a read.
  15. mattC - that's great, see you Thursday - we meet outside Roy Brooks opposite the Clockhouse pub. batdog - at 6.30 in the morning I don't think there's a huge amount of people-watching to be done in either park ;-)
  16. I can thoroughly recommend British Military Fitness. They do stuff in lots of London parks, I used to go to the 7am Hyde Park sessions on my way in to work. Having children has made that more difficult. However if we can drum up enough local interest we might be able to get some classes on e.g. Peckham Rye Common or in Dulwich Park. There are three levels - blues - reds - greens, with increasing demand on fitness level respectively. I can definitely say I've never been or felt fitter than after 3 months of it a few years back. Or if we can't get enough people for a class, I'd be happy to go halves or thirds if anyone wants to hire one of them for personal training.
  17. Great stuff. I'm not in London this coming Tuesday (running round Berlin instead) but will definitely be there at 6.30am on Thursday.
  18. Can't make it tonight unfortunately. Have a great time :)
  19. First East Dulwich Forum-inspired run this morning, good to meet you Joe... Going again Thursday 6.30 by the Clockhouse / Roy Brooks. Jamie, hope to see you there. So now I'm wondering...
  20. I realise we're veering off-topic but Quaywe you've lost me a little there. It's hard to tell from your statement who is being the Politician and whether you think that's a good or a bad thing.
  21. For a dodgy mouse user like me option one is perfect!
  22. Hi Mark, is there a way on people's profile pages to show their latest postings? One reason is that sometimes I inadvertently click on the link to the person that wrote the last post rather than the "last post" link. This way I could carry on going forwards if I make the same mistake. If you see what I mean! :)
  23. There definitely needs to be a crossing in the stretch by Somerfield. And how about people drive a little slower?
