Which bit is great line, the "jumped up egomaniacs 98% of them" part? I agree it is a lot of fuss about nothing, but that's Phil Brown for you, he's so far up his own arse it's no surprise he's got such a brown face.

>> Scholes at his peak could have walked in to any team.

We're talking about the current United midfield :) Not Scholes from a few years back but the hunched, slow, ineffective Scholes of today, that was the squad Ferguson was talking about, i.e. the vintage squad destroyed by Liverpool last week.

>> How many of those players would want to get into the Chelsea or Liverpool team?

I don't think any of them would want to feel inferior.

United bypass the midfield - so can play whoever they want when Rooney and Ronaldo are running the show. But, none of those United midfield boys would dislodge Lampard, Gerrard, Alonso, Mascherano or Essien. I'm just surprised that Ferguson says it's his best ever squad as I think they have a real weakness in the middle.
Mancs bypass the midfield????? Listen, as much I despise the Mancs, I could never level that accusation at them, and wasn't the Vidic sending off the result of a long upfield punt by Pool. Let's not all go down with the shortsighted Wengeristic disease.

I'm not your M8, very street cred, nor would I wish to be. You're too tough for me.

Talking of "cheeks" my tongue was very firmly in mine when I made that comment!

"I'm not your M8"...

....AT-TI-TUDE!!! I like it. I see you don't take any sh*t from anyone AR.

p.s. Don't mind me referring to this, but when one attended The Elephant and Castle's finest Educational Establishments one learnt that it is correct to say "You're" too tough, as in "You are", NOT "your" as in "your possessions etc"...

I trust you don't mind me mentioning that little faux pas, as it seems to be a night full of them AR.

p.p.s. Please can you be my "M8" as I LOVE a Man with AT-TI-TUDE.(tu)

Go to bed and take your medication before you hurt yourself, and check the content of a posting before you respond, otherwise you might find you've made yourself look like a bit of a chump, M8.

Don't mind me saying but your "ripostes" are getting lamer by the sentence AR.

p.s. ..."chump, M8."

"At the beginning of his brilliant teenage career it was just great expectations that followed Cesc Fabregas around. Now it is great expectorations."

just good, witty writing, right or wrong, and I admit possibly wrong, but as a fellow spaniard I'm willing to forgive... ;)

Alex Ferguson said his biggest regret was not signing Paul Gascoigne - although he used to say John Barnes.

Anyway Gazza, had the chance to join United or Spurs. Although, his favoured move back in 1988 (according to his autobiography) was to Anfield, but Liverpool never bid. I think Kenny told him to wait another year.

Gazza told Sky News: "Maybe if I had joined United I would have still been there. Sir Alex Ferguson is someone who makes men out of boys."

Obviously he'd have had more chance of winning trophies under Ferguson, but would it have him a fundamentally better person/role model had he joined United (or for that matter Liverpool 12 months later) than what we have today?

    • But all those examples sell a wide variety of things,  and mostly they are well spread out along Lordship Lane. These two shops both sell one very specific thing, albeit in different flavours, and are just across the road from each other. I don't think you can compare the distribution of shops in Roman times to the distribution of shops in Lordship Lane in the twenty first century. Well, you can, but it doesn't feel very appropriate. Haa anybody asked the first shop how they feel? Are they happy about the "healthy competition" ?
    • ED is included in the 17 August closure set (or just possibly 15 August, depending on which part of the page you trust more) listed at https://metro.co.uk/2025/07/25/full-list-25-poundland-stores-confirmed-close-august-23753048/. Here incidentally are some snippets from their annual reports, at https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/02495645/filing-history. 2022: " during the period we opened 41 stores and closed 43 loss-making/under-performing stores.  At the period-end we were trading from 821 stores in the UK, IoM and ROI. ... "We renogotiated 82 leases in the year, saving on average 45% versus the prior lease agreement..." 2023: "We also continued to improve our market footprint through sourcing better store locations, opening 53 and closing 51 stores during the year." 2024:  "The ex-Wilco stores acquired in the prior year have formed a core part of this strategy to expand our store network.  We favour quality over quantity and during the period we opened 84 stores and closed 71 loss-making/under-performing ones."
    • Ha! After I posted this, I thought of lots more examples. Screwfix and the hardware store? Mrs Robinson and Jumping Bean? Chemists, plant shops, hairdressers...  the list goes on... it's good to have healthy competition  Ooooh! Two cheese shops
    • You've got a point.  Thinking Leyland and Screwfix too but this felt different.
