I love the bit about trying to encourage 15 year old girls to stay on in education being followed by:

'domestic science is useful for a girl. It's useful right away when she marries, but it may be equally useful to a bachelor girl doing a job first.'

also, how did Mary Datchelor School, the beneficiary of an old charity thing, with a brand new block for science, end up as luxury flats?

This is the Peckham I remember as a child. Lots of memories came flooding back watching this, the Peckham School for Girls footage was especially good.

Great stuff! Remember being taught 'Domestic Science' at Kingsdale in the early 70s!

Was married in St Giles, Camberwell. Grubby looking on the outside but another world on the inside.

Part 1 very interesting too. I remember the caf? in Ruskin Park where you could get an ice cream and sit outside. It was just near the bandstand.

I was born in 1963 so the films of the area my parents and husband's parents grew up and lived in was very interesting.

hi Louisa, where was Peckham School for Girls- did it become Waverley?

Peckham School for girls was opposite Peckham Manor School for boys, Wavereley was formerly Honor Oak girls school.

Wonderful stuff. Made 15 years before I was born, but still brought back lot of memories from childhood in the 80s. Had forgotten about all the prefabs, there used to be loads around East Dulwich.

Waverley is now Harris Dulwich academy for girls (academy, yeah right), and there is a fb page for Peckham Manor school
