I've had a day off and tackled the over populated kitchen while my (hoarder) wife is away.I've lined up about 15 mugs we don't use or need and put them in a row elsewhere. Rather than just getting rid of them, can I grow anything in them? Their current location doesn't get much light. Any bright ideas?

If they're a reasonable size you could do a layer of drainage (eg polystyrene packaging broken up or florist marbles), some compost and fill each with a hyacinth bulb or a few snowdrops, narcissi and crocuses?

Or line with blotting paper and do mustard and cress, or maybe beansprouts.

If it's your first try at window sill horticulture bung in some soil, scatter over some coriander seeds (the kind you grind and use in curries etc) and loosely cover.

Coriander will grow almost anywhere and will look pleasantly green and feathery/frondy even if you don't eat it. If you do eat it, let some of it flower and go to seed - those green seeds (before they dry out) are little flavour bombs.

    • does either of them have a surgery? probably not over summer, but I thought they had to give the opportunity for their constituents to meet them.
    • MaryT, I’ve contacted the Dulwich Hill councillors several times in recent years, always copying them both in. I have never had an acknowledgment from Jon Hartley (not even an automated response or out-of-office) nor had any response or engagement from him regarding the issue raised.   On each occasion, only Maggie Browning responded (she uses an out-of-office if she is away). The last time, I received no response from either for 3 months, until Maggie Browning emailed me to apologise for not responding and asking if the problem had been resolved.

    • Agree with you - just like Love Dulwich. At least it is healthier than pizza and god knows how many chicken, chips and burger places on lane.. And different.
