So, for absolute clarity, and to keep me interested, you stopped drinking on the 1st of January? or is this infact going to be the 5-31 with a day off in the middle?

Cannot recommend My Fitness Pal enough, good for motivation (and re-education, I found learnt a lot). Whatever the "diet", the only important thing is calories in vs calories out (whatever method the diet uses to achieve that), and MFP is great for tracking calories and exercise (though cut the exercise calories burnt in half, it's a bit overgenerous), and the forums are good for tips and motivation. Also recommend not setting too high a week loss goal (absolute max 2 pounds a week if you have a fair bit to lose, half a pound if not much) and doing it slowly. Too fast and you'll be hungry and miserable and probably be losing as much muscle as fat. Too avoid that, major on protein and strength train - progressive resistance/weight based regime.

Lost a load using MFP this year and was never hungry doing it this way. You do need to track everything and weigh it properly, but it's worth it, and wasn't that hard to do, just take a bit of planning of meals etc.

Yes, there are the high fat/very low carb diets that use ketosis to lose weight, but they just sound like you'd feel gross and lack energy, and doesn't sound like a very sustainable plan. I don't know a lot about it though.

I've been making some soup for the week ahead - Abel and Cole have just introduced a soup box where they deliver all the ingredients to your door for three soups (makes 2-3 portions of each) and a recipe card for those soups for ?12.50.

I expect I might be able to buy the ingredients for less in the supermarket, but it's nice getting it delivered to the door, and I know it will make me be more adventurous in my choices.

The ones this week are quite varied and the first one I've eaten for lunch was very tasty.

Its a very long day already and I have not even left work yet. Total consumption one mandarin orange for breakfast and for lunch a small portion of cottage pie and green beans.

I'm looking forward to a small tin of red salmon - with lettuce and cottage cheese for "dinner" about 7pm. I think when I have finished that i'll be properly bored already and have an early night.

I thought this was quite nice little link - something for everyone - some free apps to track runs/calories to suggestions of things to cut out/down on. Also refers to park run - while these are held all over the capital I am also pretty sure events are held on the rye and also at dulwich common weekly (not that I have been). Also a shout out for the 5:2!

That reminds me of the opening scene of Whiskey Galore where the narrator says the islanders practise traditional forms of amusement as a dozen children, each one slightly shorter than the one before, run out of a cottage...

My son is into porridge after a daily 16 hour fast. He makes it in water and adds mashed banana, sultanas/raisins and nuts. He's trying to get down to almost zero body fat. Supposedly if you refrain from eating for that length of time the body starts eating its own fat. So for the other 8 hours in the day you don't need to restrict yourself. That's what he thinks anyway or at least that's what I think he thinks.
Sounds a bit extreme but I expect he knows what he's doing. Obviously I'm not a doctor, but the way I understand it, the brain runs on glucose and once your body has used up the available glucose in the blood and then the glycogen store, it has to start breaking down tissue to synthesize it. The risky part is that the process breaks down muscle as well as fat, which I believe is why extreme diets can be dangerous for people with heart disease or who are very unfit (years ago my grandmother had a heart attack doing the Cambridge Diet). Probably different if you're already fit, though, as it sounds like your son is, as the body will want to keep muscles it knows are being used.

When Carbohydrates are restricted the body starts to use sored fat as a source of Fuel.

When the Body burns Fat Ketones are produced and can be detected in urine with a dipstick Ketostix

The indicator turns more Purple the more Ketones that are present.

Even though everyone is generating ketones continuously, this detection in the urine is what is commonly called "ketosis."

This is particularly problematic with people with Diabetes where a dangerous condition

called ketoacidosis can develop.

High Ketones can also be detected by breath smelling of 'Pear Drops' Acetone.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once fat stores are used up., The body starts to cannibalize itself damaging major organs.

The subject is vastly complex and too much to explain here.

16-stone Adebayo Akinfenwa of AFC Wimbledon and similarly Luton Town's Steve McNulty, make me think I too can be an athlete. The 20 fags a day then make me think otherwise...

Actually if I'm not boozing then I'm not smoking, and if I'm doing neither of those then I'm exercising and living like a vegan in the wilderness chanting 'ohmm'. I wish I could strike a balance between healthy and unhealthy living. That is the key to happiness...

Edited in response to someone else's mention of midweek squash. This often gets mentioned in other threads, I'd be up for squash. cracking game.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes Fed 2011. Through diet control I am no longer

considered as being Diabetic. My sugars are normal with HbA1C of 5.3mml/L

Even though I now eat almost anything..

Type-2 diabetes is diagnosed when HbA1C > 6.9mml/L

I still test my Sugars although I don't really need to.

I test for Ketones in hot weather after exercise if I feel dehydrated.

Diabetes can be reversed but you need to read up and you certainly learn fast if you want to beat it.

They are my own words.

Except pizza. He hates pizza. Tried it a couple of times in the past but like a lot of posh food it's-... ...-that can't be made at home.

You're welcome.

Dulwich Maxxi - anticipating the future - for your pleasure.

I read somewhere that if you do the 5/2 diet and start the starving days at 2pm then you can have lunch! And a chunk of the time you are asleep- sounds like a plan. Saw the sell by date on the Xmas pud is march 2016 so I could save it for next Xmas.....

Run number 2 tonight. Struggling to avoid mid afo snacks, and 4 grapes with some bird seed just aint cutting it for me. Starving already and still a while till home time!

Wont revisit the scales till Monday - to be disappointed no doubt!

    • Rant ahead: You're not one of them but unfortunately, there's a substrate of posters here that do very little except moan and come up with weird conspiracy theories. They're immediately highly critical of just about any change, and their initial assumption is that everyone else is a total fucking contemptible idiot. For example: don't you think that the people who run the libraries will have considered the impact of timing of reconstruction on library users? (In fact, we know they have - because they've made arrangements at other libraries to attempt to mitigate the disruption). After all, these are the people that spend their whole working week thinking about libraries and dealing with library users (and the kids especially). You don't go into the library game for the chicks and fame - so it's fair to assume that librarians are committed to public service and public access to libraries, including by kids. Likewise the built environment people (engineers, architects, construction managers, project managers, construction contractors, subcontractors or whoever is on this job) are told to minimise disruption on every job they do. The thing that occurs to us as amateurs within 30 seconds of us seeing something is probably not something a full time professional hasn't thought about! Southwark Council, the NHS, TfL, Dulwich Estate, Thames Water, Openreach - they're not SPECTRE factories filled with malevolent chaosmongers trying to persecute anyone. They're mostly filled with people who understand their job and try to do their best with what they've been given - just like all of us. Nobody is perfect or immune from challenge, and that's fair enough, but why not at least start from the assumption that there's a good reason why things have been done the way they have? Any normal person would be pleased that their busy, pretty, lively local library is getting refurbished, and will have more space and facilities for kids and teens, and will be more efficient to run and warmer in winter. But no, EDT_Forumite_752 had kids who did an exam 20 years ago, and this makes them an expert on library refurbishment who can see it's all just stuff and nonsense for the green agenda and why can't it all be put off... 😡😡😡
