(General petition against fracking) Earthquakes Dulwich and West Norwood?

Recommended Posts

I just received the below email and knowing the 'people power' of the local residents, thought I'd share:

The government is trying to change the law so big energy companies can drill for gas under our homes - without asking us. [Dulwich and West Norwood is sat on top of a seam of gas - and it?s already been earmarked for drilling. So unless these plans are stopped, gas could be sucked from under your home very soon.

But together, we could do just that. Because to change the law the government needs MPs to vote for it in parliament. And the vote's in just a few weeks. Let's make it clear that backing dirty energy companies over constituents would be a toxic move.

A huge people-powered petition against the plans - which we can hand in to our MPs - will make sure all MPs know the way they should vote. Will you stand up for your home ?

The plans - simple changes to existing trespass law - could mean your home surrounded by noisy machines, and your local park turned into a gas field. All without your permission. The process - known as fracking - could also poison our water and produce toxic waste. And it?s known to cause earthquakes.

All over the country, people and local councils have been refusing planning permission to dirty energy companies for fracking. But this change in the law takes away our power to say no to it happening under our homes.

When we work together, we?re stronger. And we?re not alone. Greenpeace supporters, Friends of the Earth members and thousands of grassroots campaigners are all standing hand-in-hand to stop these plans, for each other's homes. It?s a truly people-powered effort. Will you join us?

Have a look at the Friends of the Earth map https://www.foe.co.uk/campaigns/climate/issues/uk_fracking_map_41274

A company (Northdown Energy) has already applied for a licence for the areas in question in SE London/Kent and there is plenty of information about this proposal elsewhere....Boris is adamant that London should be fracked if there is found to be shale gas in order to 'keep the lights on'...

"the current cause celebre of the left is my cynical view"

godammit man must you always be so one-dimensional

plenty on the left are pro or at least agnostic, whilst many on the right in the tory shires where fracking sites are mooted are up in arms

anyway - fracking. The geographical and scale benefits in the US was always going to make it a better fit than a small island tho right?

And one of the geo-political impacts the success of fracking has had is the current tumbling oil price - which in turn is going to make it less attractive for companies to invest infrastructure getting at trickier targets

Seeing the success and benefits of the process in America doesn't automatically make ALL opponents in this country militant, radical, luddite or even left-wing.

Either way I expect we will all be talking plenty about energy sources of all kinds for years to come

"The geographical and scale benefits in the US was always going to make it a better fit than a small island tho right?"

UK unit costs are always going to be higher but unit costs overall are expected to fall in any event. Any commercial operator is going to have a pretty good handle on the numbers. And the falling oil price is an indication of, wonder of wonders, real competition in the energy sector, driven to a significant extent by fracking itself, which has led to a pretty fundamental split between OPEC members having to react to falling market prices.

It would be nice to see some respect for actual science - I think there is a consensus that fracking can be done safely, my concern is to ensure that if it is done, it is actually done safely.

Ah, 38 Degrees. The pressure group with such a poor understanding of science, it even fails to understand its own name.

"In nature, avalanches begin when they reach the tipping point angle of 38 Degrees."

Sigh. Even a cursory thought should make you realise that is utter tosh.

All,

I noticed a very large drill on Crystal Palace Road recently. You couldn't miss it if you were walking past unless you were reading or were subject to some other distraction. Can anyone who has also seen it say how a fracking drill in Dulwich would compare to this in terms of size?

I suspect because it is not a specific East Dulwich issue, but more of a general South London issue, as per the title.

I was originally an enthusiast for Avaaz and 38 degrees but now they and their ilk get on my tits. They constantly have to come up with issues to justify their existences and invariably they are button pushers for slacktivism.

I know nothing about fracking except a radio interview I heard where a very bright chap said that done properly it can be pretty clean and won't damage water tables etc.

A little more evidence and a little less hysteria would be nice.

Love to see the responses when the lights go out.

Anyway, I sadly have yet to meet anyone against this who has shown a good understanding of it. Fracking is not a new thing, may come as a surprise to some of the NIMBYS I realise. Was laughable watching the protests at Balcombe where some well-heeled "protesters" drove specially in their 4x4s. Where were the protests in the Weald and the Midlands I wonder, its always the bloody southerners who complain when its in their back yard.

Even the ridiculous scare-mongering title of this thread is laughable.

I thought I might begin my post in keeping with the spirit of the thread. Maybe I should have mentioned that the size of the drill is irrelevant as the well is horizontally pumped (amazing technology) with fluids. NASTY DANGEROUS EARTHQUAKE INDUCING FLUIDS. etc.

    • Thanks for all of the thoughts. I have a letter from searches which outlines the scope of work but doesn't mention any work guarantee as far as I can see. I agree that next step is to check directly with the major works team. Tim .
    • I thoroughly recommend Jay from JK Electrical Contractors who is an NICEIC registered. NICEIC is the UK's leading certification body for the electrical contracting industry and conducts regular audits and assessments on all its members. It is the specialist trade body which certifies professional electricians.  Jay completed the installation of a 19 way consumer unit for us and works to the highest standards and our entire electrical installation is now fully compliant with 18th Edition of the electrical wiring regulations. Before installing the new CU he traced and corrected faults that had developed over the last 25 years -some of which were my DIY bodges that were non-compliant.  We now have an installation that is 100% safe and  reliable . His contact details are :- 0208 150 6450 [email protected] Here is what he installed for us.
    • I fully support this petition, however it will need to be shared far & wide to be effective. Also there is always a huge amount of interest / objection during the festival, but not so much when they start consulting for the next one, usually around January. It's crucial that everyone that has been impacted makes their voice heard then.  A couple of points which may be good to include in the wording (if it is still possible to amend?) - The total tickets sold are way more than 3000. The licence allows a capacity of up to 9,999, but this may include staff & performers etc. The published attendance for 2024 was:  Friday – 8,999 / Saturday – 9,512 / Sunday – 9,422 So that's c.28,000 people trampling & littering our park over three days - people who have no need or desire to take any care or consideration of our park.  - Gala claim for 2024 that "62% of all ticket holders were from Southeast London and 18% of these were from hyper-local postcode areas SE15 and SE22." So a bit of maths shows that means that around 89% of attendees were not what most people would term 'local'... - Gala have ambitions / plans to extend the number of event days to 6, over two weekends. They applied for a licence for this in 2024, but then withdrew it. Instead they added a "free" event, billed as a community day, to the existing 3 day festival, thereby increasing the event days to 4.  This would appear to be an attempt to set a precedent for increasing the number of event days, and it's inevitable that they will attempt to secure the 6 days they desire for 2026, to increase their profits further. Two weekends in a row of noise, disturbance & disruption would be unacceptable, plus an extra c.18,000 trampling & littering the park... - The site size has been increased. The claim is that it is to compensate for lost storage space due to recent flood alleviation works, but the area has increased by more than the area lost, and appears to have been used for attendee activity rather than site storage. Gala have often stated that the festival can only be located in the park because the footprint has been designed specifically for that area, and yet this year the footprint had been amended & extended without any apparent issues. Surely this proves that it could be relocated?  Apologies, I just can't help going into rant mode on this issue, but hopefully some of the above may be helpful in increasing the argument presented by the petition?
