Bring back hedgehog flavoured crisps...

In the UK in 1981, Hedgehog Foods Ltd decided, as a joke, to produce Hedgehog flavoured crisps (potato chips). To everyone's surprise, the crisps were a huge success.

Hedgehog flavoured crisps were actually flavoured with pork fat and no hedgehogs were used in the manufacturing process. Consequently, it wasn't long before Hedgehog Foods Ltd was in court (1982), up against the Office of Fair Trading, on a charge of false advertising.

Bizarrely, a settlement was finally reached when Mr Lewis, of Hedgehog Foods, interviewed gypsies who actually did eat baked hedgehogs, to ascertain the flavour of hedgehogs. Mr Lewis then commissioned a flavourings firm to duplicate the flavour as closely as possible and changed the labels from "hedgehog flavoured" to "hedgehog flavour" and all interests were satisfied!

I'm 'in the know' on this one.

But I don't think I should tell you - you're trying to get a girlfriend aren't you?

Not that your last date would have noticed your breath, realistically.

I loved hedgehog flavour crisps - the most exotic of all flavours ever (at least they were in my mining town in the North East) - they came in a beige paper bag with a picture of a hedgehog (in case the 'flavouring' wasn't clear). 9p a packet. Happy days......

You must remember this then...'Why aye man, Tudor crisps, I'll climb a mountain!'

Ahhh very very Happy days, bring back Tudor!

Actually I seem to remember Tudor crips not being very crispy and the bags were too small, still happy days......

    • This thread hasn't been updated for a while. For the Sept 2025 intake (i.e. the kids starting this week), the Charter East Dulwich school website says the 'longest distance' offered was 1700m (as of 1st May 2025 - I guess it might have increased a bit more after 1st May 2025). Below is a map of 1700m - but parents should still apply even if outside this circle (the distance has been increasing each year, as local demographics change etc) For those considering applying for Sept 2026, this recent Ofsted report is very encouraging - https://files.ofsted.gov.uk/v1/file/50249504 - it basically says the school would have been graded as 'Outstanding', but it was not a 'graded inspection' so they are not officially allowed to say that. Obviously Ofsted has its limitations (!), but the text in this report is very complimentary.  And the recent GCSE and A level results are the best yet:  https://www.chartereastdulwich.org.uk/post/year-11-students-at-the-charter-school-east-dulwich-achieve-strongest-gcse-results-yet  https://www.chartereastdulwich.org.uk/post/sixth-form-students-at-charter-east-celebrate-best-ever-results An unapologetically pro-Charter East Dulwich post 🙂
