The price of the first pint (drink)I ever bought was..?

Recommended Posts

Can't quite recall the first, but when I was at university it was ?1.30 for a pint of strongbow in the bar. For some reason ours wasn't union ran so it wasn't that much cheaper than going to town. I think we only ever drank there because town was a bus ride away so no use for a quick one near closing time - it had all the charm & atmosphere of an airport terminal lounge.
Can't quite remember the first pint I ever bought, it was probably in about 1993/4 (date wise not ?1993/4). I do remember when I was a student 96-2000ish they would have 99cents a beer parties. Which converted into pommy money is about sixpence.
Our student bar was so corrupt that you rarely had to pay for a drink and if you did you even got more money back in change than you gave over. Not surprising that the whole thing went under and external people had to be brought in to run it (rather than some pissed up member of the rugby team). Happy days!

Did you go to Warwick indiepanda?

The largest bar there is/was actually called 'The Airport Lounge' for very good reason!

My first pint was probably ?1.10 at the Five Ways Hotel in Worcester around 1986. I believe it was Hofmeister, but I graudated to Kronenbourg 1664 very shortly afterwards at ?1.35.

My ?5.00 pocket money could thus just accommodate 4 pints of the hard stuff each Friday night. Just enough to get me twinkled.

It depends where you go really.

In the 24 hour restaurant across the road (the equivalent of the local pub I guess) a 660ml bottle (1.2 pints) is $6, which was 2 quid a couple of months ago, but now it's 3 quid as the pound tumbled.

On Boat Quay (the tourist centre-of-town equivalent) it's $12 for a pint now meaning around 6 quid. As you can imagine, I don't go there much.

Honkers is the same (so prices must have dropped), with Wan Chai one of the most expensive areas around 6 to 8 quid, and most popular with tourists. In Kowloon you can get thrashed much more cheaply.

Ha yeah, I went out in Wan Chai, but not for long, blimey!! (though little dave found the wan chai equivalent of behind-the-door kebab and wine there, which was much more reasonable.

First pint? Greene King IPA at the Three Horseshoes in Willian 1988, I guess about ?1.60

No, but I went to one built around the same time - Bath. Much smaller uni than Warwick - just had the one bar in those days (it's pushing 15 years and I know the uni has expanded since I left, so might be quite different now)

    • The middle classes were never going to accept a poundshop- far too downmarket for them and not that good for their expected house price increases. Not one to dicsuss around the table at a dinner party either!
    • Unfortunately the cleaning company still has a Facebook page called 'East dulwich forum' which is what you are seeing here.  Facebook Group = a place where other people can participate. Facebook Page = a profile page for a business where only the business can post.   I will be disputing the name of the cleaning company's Facebook Page as well as its obviously designed to mislead people that its related to this website, but the main aim was to prevent them using 'East Dulwich Forum' as their group name, which has been somewhat achieved (even if they've just just appended '& Herne Hill' 😆)
    • Hi, my wife lost a single (left) apple earpod this morning running for the train. It was lost on Melbourne Grove, she believes it was near the Jarvis Road junction (where Gaby Leon clinic is on the corner). Would be hugely appreciative if anyone has found it! I went by 30mins later and couldn't see it anywhere.. Many thanks!
    • The fake East Dulwich group has thousands of members and has now added Herne Hill to their title. If you look up members, the admin team will come up and it’s run by I think Brazilian  admins such as Samual Oliveira, and they own East Dulwich Cleaners and East Dulwich Builders.  The real EDF recently set up by Joe on FB is new and members are lower and the bio states it’s connected to this group.    Likewise if you check out the admin on my East Dulwich Mums, you’ll see we are not the same people that run the other groups.  All the information is on the groups when you read the bio and check the admin list.  My East Dulwich Mums group is private and we have three admins so we all just pop on and off the group throughout the day to approve posts and it has been working successfully since we first started the group. We do give a lot of members pre approval who have proven to be trustworthy and genuine. We also vet members on sign up to try and weed out the spammers. Obviously now and again one will slip through the net but for the most part having the group private and with posts all requiring approval has meant it’s pretty much well run with minimal drama.
