andymat
Hello, my first post here. My girlfriend and I popped out this morning to Cafe 2050 on Forest Hill Road. Nice to get out an get some fresh air. Got the papers and sat down with two coffees, a bacon sandwich and a sausage sandwich. ?2.75 each. When they arrived there was one rasher of bacon spread over two bits of bread. Mine was even better, one sausage cut in two. What a total piss take! Check out the photo below and see how ridiculous it is? http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3368/3300097796_af44379663.jpgWe went in and asked what was going on... The response "Is one sausage not enough?" Shame the builders cafe isn't open on a Sunday!Title changed following legal advice - the AdministratorTo stop people whining weren't charged and left after paying for Coffee and OJ. brum
Hi andymat, welcome to the forum. I really sympathise with you and your girlfriend! I'll remember to avoid that place - such measly portions! Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/5397-cafe-2050/#findComment-172722 Share on other sites
andymat
Yeah and for close to ?8 you could rustle up some much better sandwiches at home! Think we'll do that in future. brum
Funnily enough, I've just enjoyed a nice home-made bacon buttie myself - with two rashers of bacon! Such luxury... Toshlines
That's odd. Not that I don't believe you but the menu says ?2.75 for a start, so you've either been overcharged or your righteous indignation has inflated things a bit. Was it a special sausage? I go probably once a week and I've found their sandwiches lovely. Though I usually (well, since they've been available) have bacon and sausage. My wife had a full english last weekend and it seemed pretty sizable. I'm just off to get one, in fact. My experience of that place being that the food is excellent and the service rather good and I'm pleased I live near such a nice, friendly and quality cafe. Plus the coffee is pretty damn fine. And the cakes! So, Brum, there's a counterpoint for you. I could pay two quid for a sausage sandwich at the cafe nearer the Herne but, all things being equal, the food is about, ooh, roughly three and half times nicer at Cafe 2050. Bargain. I'll shut up now. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/5397-cafe-2050/#findComment-172753 Share on other sites

Perhaps then - as suggested by Toshlines - the sandwich was ?2.75 and the coffee was ?1. Is it "?4 for one sausage" or "?2.75 for a sausage sandwich"? andymat
Toshlines, do you own the place or you just worried that there's a problem in paradise? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/5397-cafe-2050/#findComment-172767 Share on other sites

andymat
I don't see any personal "attack" SimonM. I do apologise regardless. I stand corrected. It was ?2.75 as my girlfriend paid. I still do think that ?2.75 for one piece of bacon cut in to four pieces is a little off though. Besides, I do think we've got better things to worry about. JUED
Even ?2.75 is steep for a sausage sandwich that looks like that! Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/5397-cafe-2050/#findComment-172779 Share on other sites
bon3yard
Shame, I've found their food pretty good in the past and they make a mean Americano. Still, cant say your sausage sarnie had me salivating to any degree. andymat
Yeah, don't get me wrong. We enjoy their coffee and french stick just a bit cheeky when we're making the effort to support a local business. Ah well. Lots more important things to think about. Toshlines
Don't own the place, no. Nor do I complain on a public forum the minute my extraordinarily high standards aren't met when otherwise, as I've said, when all is said and done, it's a nice cafe serving good food. I'll defend the place because I like it and the bacon and sausage sarnie I had there last Sunday was the best I've had outside Fuzzy's Grub (Best Sandwich Shop Ever). The cooked stuff is a relatively new offering, so it's entirely possible servings will be adjusted if people complain. Although as I said, the full English seemed big enough to me. It is a little on the pricey side but I think that their cold meats are organic (and locally sourced) so the new hot meats (yeah!) might be too and it's possible that because the sausage is therefore not made of sawdust or Mr Frisky, the price may reflect that. I heartily agree that there are more important things to think about. I'm starving, for example. boosboss
I had a bacon sandwich there this morning ?2.75 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Veronique uses William Rose products and fresh baked bread, so the basic ingredients for your sandwich undoubtedly cost more than those used in most builders cafes. andymat
Well it would be nice if the single (that's single people hellloooo) piece of bacon didn't even cover the bread. Nice bacon or not it's still piss take. What would the Guardian Food Column think? EXACTLY. Did you? I don't have super high standards. I thought I should just say something. It's a single sausage and like the title of the forum says "General ED issues". boosboss
I've just spoken to Veronique, who remembers the complaint clearly. Not only did she apologise for the bacon sandwich, but replaced it and as a gesture of goodwill didn't charge you for any of the sandwiches, bacon or sausage. You only paid for your drinks! I've known Veronique for a number of years and know how much effort and hard work she and her staff are putting into this business. So when a complaint is dealt with in what most people would consider a more than satisfactory manner, your continued criticism is unfair to say the least. That's great, but what were they thinking providing such a scant filling in the first place?I like cafe 2050, but I do think the portions are rather meagre. i'm breastfeeding and I get really hungry, and their scrambled egg comes with just one piece of toast, I always have to ask for toast and jam on the side. Al&Em
If they dealt with it as well as Boosboss says then I think this info really should have been included in the original post to present a fair view. cate
Andymat, it would have been good if you had mentioned that she hadn't charged you after you complained. Anything else?
