Hello, my first post here.

My girlfriend and I popped out this morning to Cafe 2050 on Forest Hill Road. Nice to get out an get some fresh air. Got the papers and sat down with two coffees, a bacon sandwich and a sausage sandwich. ?2.75 each. When they arrived there was one rasher of bacon spread over two bits of bread. Mine was even better, one sausage cut in two. What a total piss take!

Check out the photo below and see how ridiculous it is?

We went in and asked what was going on... The response "Is one sausage not enough?"

Shame the builders cafe isn't open on a Sunday!

That's odd. Not that I don't believe you but the menu says ?2.75 for a start, so you've either been overcharged or your righteous indignation has inflated things a bit. Was it a special sausage? I go probably once a week and I've found their sandwiches lovely. Though I usually (well, since they've been available) have bacon and sausage. My wife had a full english last weekend and it seemed pretty sizable. I'm just off to get one, in fact. My experience of that place being that the food is excellent and the service rather good and I'm pleased I live near such a nice, friendly and quality cafe. Plus the coffee is pretty damn fine. And the cakes! So, Brum, there's a counterpoint for you. I could pay two quid for a sausage sandwich at the cafe nearer the Herne but, all things being equal, the food is about, ooh, roughly three and half times nicer at Cafe 2050. Bargain. I'll shut up now.

Do you mean a coffee and a sandwich for ?3.75? Perhaps then - as suggested by Toshlines - the sandwich was ?2.75 and the coffee was ?1.

Is it "?4 for one sausage" or "?2.75 for a sausage sandwich"?

I don't see any personal "attack" SimonM.

I do apologise regardless.

I stand corrected. It was ?2.75 as my girlfriend paid. I still do think that ?2.75 for one piece of bacon cut in to four pieces is a little off though.

Besides, I do think we've got better things to worry about. Someone was almost attacked by a rat in Sainsburys!

Don't own the place, no. Nor do I complain on a public forum the minute my extraordinarily high standards aren't met when otherwise, as I've said, when all is said and done, it's a nice cafe serving good food. I'll defend the place because I like it and the bacon and sausage sarnie I had there last Sunday was the best I've had outside Fuzzy's Grub (Best Sandwich Shop Ever).

The cooked stuff is a relatively new offering, so it's entirely possible servings will be adjusted if people complain. Although as I said, the full English seemed big enough to me. It is a little on the pricey side but I think that their cold meats are organic (and locally sourced) so the new hot meats (yeah!) might be too and it's possible that because the sausage is therefore not made of sawdust or Mr Frisky, the price may reflect that. I heartily agree that there are more important things to think about. I'm starving, for example.

Did you look at the picture? Did you?

I don't have super high standards. I thought I should just say something. It's a single sausage and like the title of the forum says "General ED issues".

I've just spoken to Veronique, who remembers the complaint clearly. Not only did she apologise for the bacon sandwich, but replaced it and as a gesture of goodwill didn't charge you for any of the sandwiches, bacon or sausage. You only paid for your drinks!

I've known Veronique for a number of years and know how much effort and hard work she and her staff are putting into this business. So when a complaint is dealt with in what most people would consider a more than satisfactory manner, your continued criticism is unfair to say the least.

That's great, but what were they thinking providing such a scant filling in the first place?

I like cafe 2050, but I do think the portions are rather meagre. i'm breastfeeding and I get really hungry, and their scrambled egg comes with just one piece of toast, I always have to ask for toast and jam on the side.

It's good job you put that in bold for me.

    • Oh yes, it could have been about there, I can't remember exactly. At one point there seemed to be a load of pizza places opening on NCR. I vaguely remember the one we used to use was put out of business by another one which opened. Wasn't Grace and Favour's food offering more of a tea shop at the back of the actual shop? If memory serves the owner, whose name escapes me now, was one of the earliest people I know to move to Hastings. Which must now be crammed with South East Londoners 🤣

    • Hi Dogkennelhillbilly, You won't be aware that i proposed infill sites for housing in East Dulwich - the garages on Bassano Street and Henslowe that respectively became 1-4 Dill Terrace family houses and the 78, 80, 80A Henslowe Street family houses. These were council owned garages and it was frustrating how slow the council was to go from my idea to completion (roughly eight years). East Dulwich has some other vacant WW2 bomb sites I'm guessing that the private land owners have been sitting on.Owe for a land tax for vacant land.  WRT to the builders yard by East dulwich station. Southwark Council has an agreed policy the area should remain suburban 2/3 storeys maximum. But the approved scheme is 9 storeys of student accommodation. Very hard to put this genie back in the bottle. The council has recently publicly stated lower ratios of social housing will be required. I will be amazed if the developer doesn't submit another application now they have the 9 storeys approved but with significantly less social housing. The less social housing the higher the land values. The higher the land values the less social housing viability reports state are possible.  If we really want to increase home supply - Southwark have over 6,000 empty homes. Vancouver charges a low % of the value of empty homes and rapidly eased this problem. Parts of Wales have introduced under Article 4 planning permission is required for second homes seeing within 12 months a dramatic decrease in property prices. Southwark Council have Article 4 requirements - why not add this one? It takes National political will to solve this AND regional and local authorities such as the second home council tax premium and these being used promptly.
    • https://www.letslinkuk.net/ I'm interested to know why the OP didn't find this sort of scheme to work, as I would have thought it was much harder to find someone to do a direct exchange with? Does anybody else have experience of a scheme like this? Happy to be persuaded!
