Deptford Green

Please talk to me about Deptford Green....any other kids going or gone there?

Having been offered another school that was not one of our top preferences, we've revisited DG and like it. It seems they have a very nurturing environment and kids that go there seem happy...

Would be good to here some feedback from parents. Feel free to pm me.

Thanks

I visited the school last Autumn on one of their open evenings.

I was really impressed all round, the students were just great, and the staff seemed very committed and

prepared to go the extra mile for their pupils. I think it's a school that's improving year on year, and

I'll definitely be putting it in our top three next year.

I think it seemed a great school too and I know of one parent who was SO pleased to get in as sons friends were there and very happy. They have a great pastoral transition system. Apart from distance I would be very pleased if my son got a place.

Hi Starstarlet,

in previous years like this year there have been several families who have wanted a mixed school and didn't secure a place for their child at Charter/Kingsdale/Haberdasher's Aske's. I have visited the school myself (I think the rooftop classrooms are ace), I think it's a good school (70%, 5 GCSEs including English and Maths, note stats in the tables are much lower as they do iGCSEs in some subjects) and I've had very positive feedback from parents whose children attend. Therefore, I have been continuing to suggest to parents who haven't secured a place at one of the local, Southwark, co-ed schools to go and visit Deptford Green. It is a Lewisham school but due to its proximity to the Southwark border, 30-40% of pupils come from Southwark. Its particularly a popular destination for pupils from Ivydale school.

The 343 bus goes close by, alternatively there is the frequent train/overground service from Forest Hill or HOP to New Cross Gate.

A school that's been improving by leaps and bounds is St Thomas the Apostle in Nunhead, outstanding Ofsted and 76% 5 GCSEs. To clarify that whilst a Catholic school it does take non-Catholics too.

Great thank you for the feedback, are any kids starting this September?

Would also be interested chatting with anyone who has a child at the school....

Renata, yes we really like DG & very impressed with what we have seen. The co-ed is a massive plus! Do you know if many come or will from peckham /goose green/ bellenden area? One of our concerns is that he maybe the only kid coming back over this way.

Thanks

Hi starstarlet,

I bumped into a friend the other night who was gushing about how fabulous DG is!!! Her son is happy and thriving, she couldnt praise it more highly. They live around Bellenden/ED.

I know she reads the forum so hopefully she can respond to you on a more personal level, but if i see her will def. get her to read this and get in touch.

Forget what the cllrs/anyone else say - trust your instincts and go and visit a few more times if you need to.

We ended up not going for DG, but we absolutely loved it and the decision not to pick it was a hard one. We had a second tour and a meeting with the head of Yr7 and SENCO as part of our research, as well as the very impressive open evening, and found the staff very caring and committed. We were very struck by the confidence and passion of the pupils we met. Also, last year it went into federation with Conisborough College in Catford, which turned around the formerly notorious Catford Girls into a school going from strength to strength (still a local authority school), so I reckon this is an excellent time to be part of the school.

I still have some regrets that we went elsewhere!

    • I have emailed [email protected] with a series of questions about the event including asking how many complaints were made to them and Gala, and how many times the readings went over the limit of decibels allowed, as well as asking about if they are satisfied with the state of the park afterwards and how much money will go directly to the park.  I asked quite a few pertinent and important questions.  Given the replies I think we shall have more ammunition to stop this next year.  However, if replies are refused or not answered in enough detail, a FOI shall be fired off and the responses to that shall be even more ammunition as it would have taken an FOI to acquire it.  Either way shall keep you informed.  If all of you who didn't turn up to meetings this year, turn up and join the rest of us next year, with all the information about how Events and Gala went against their word on what would happen, we may just stop this. Look, I can dream, ok?
