DonGee
Does anyone know when the new Lebanse restaurant opposite Sainsburys, Dulwich Plough will be opening, and what is it called? adsyb99
Don, place is called Hanush. Looks more like an upmarket kebab shop as opposed to a restaurant as can't really see anywhere to sit. Not sure when it will be open, but looks very close I'd say. keane
Just had a takeaway from here & it was absolutely delicious. Wraps with good chicken or lamb in not like the kebab meat U normally see in some kebab places on the rotation thing, but proper bits of fresh chicken & very fresh salad in a wrap - we had the chicken shawarma & lamb shawarma & the tabbouleh salad. Jah Lush
Let's get this straight. It's a takeaway not an eat in restaurant? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/55704-new-lebanese-restaurant/#findComment-836623 Share on other sites

The best is FM Mangals in Camberwell, so I'm glad we have somewhere local doing wraps. (FM Mangals are done on the fire oven and delicious) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/55704-new-lebanese-restaurant/#findComment-836713 Share on other sites
keane
I think the difference was Jeremy that the elephant leg doesn't look like the normal elephant leg that I associate with kebab shops! Have a look & see what u think & I think the wrap nicer than pitta, k Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/55704-new-lebanese-restaurant/#findComment-836883 Share on other sites
Cedges
I haven't been in yet but I saw in through the windows...the 'elephant legs' are not the 'usual' homogenised slab of processed meats formed into a 'leg' but proper doner kebab made the original way, this being slices of flattened marinated meat layered one on top of the other until a vaguely 'leg' shape is formed. When sliced off, it presents as small pieces of meat rather than a slice from a processed version. Jeremy - I think this is what Keane was referring to rather than the meat chunks of a sheesh kebab that I think you are thinking of. They do look delicious and if they are just made with proper meat and you don't go nuts with the garlic sauce, its probably a relatively healthy meal. Looking forward to trying it. Jeremy
OK... sounds good. I'm up for trying the gourmet elephant's leg.Interestingly I've just come back from Tokyo, and Turkish takeaways selling doner kebabs are everywhere. The Japanese seem to go crazy for it. The "chicken doner" seemed to be the most common variety. Seabag
I note they have the jigsaw-puzzle-of-meat-elephant-leg which is much more satisfactoryIt's the minced up 'meat paste' version always i'm suspicious aboutThe game is being upped in ED, which is a good thing Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/55704-new-lebanese-restaurant/#findComment-838087 Share on other sites
Pugwash
We had a takeaway on Friday evening - the set meal for 2 people plus a chicken burger and chips for grandson.Must admit we were not over enamoured, a bit let down after so many people said it was good including a friend. Hubby felt they were very disorganised, no one person in front of house taking money. We had rung up previously and were told 30 mins. and still had to wait when he arrived, We could not eat all the meat so put it in the fridge and added it to some soup - much better. They may have had an off day as the meat was quite dry. Rice and salad was very good. jack_G_S
I had the same experience last night. They were all over the place, messy, slow. However, the shawarma was tasty. My gf wasn't keen on the falafel. I think the standard has been set by the falafel place in Camberwell. Cheaper, more cheerful, more organise, tastier.... And, as a bonus, you can take them into the Stormbird next door and wash it down with a tasty beer. Pugwash
You cannot beat the Falafel place in Camberwell - my work is nearby and staff frequently have their lunch from there. When we had a leaving door we ordered about 30 falafels from them and got a discount. JimH
I went there the other day. It has an eat in section in the back as well as the takeaway and you have the usual dose of tipsy middleage men coming for an after-beer kebab. The menu is quite small but is good and it is proper lamb rather than the processed gunk you get in some of the lower end kebab shops. The guys running it are nice enough and I think are just having a few teething problems as they have just set up ? I am sure they will get slicker as time goes on.For me it is better than the kebab shop that was there before and I would class it as a notch down to Hsar down the road (bench mark for me) but it is cheaper and more convenient (for me) so happy to recommend. I did not eat there but there is a room at the back which seems ok for a chilled out lunch or dinner. Cedges
Was excited to try Hanush out on Tuesday night and was actually very dissapointed. I had the lamb chops - i'd normally go for chicken wings but as there were only 4 on each skewer, i didn't bother. I asked for bread, rice, salad and garlic sauce. They missed the bread, waved barely a snifter of sauce over the chops and well, the salad was salad but it would have been nice to be asked what salad I wanted. The chops were sooo bad however, I know chops aren't exactly a meat feast each but there was barely a mouthful of meat on each. So i had less than 4 mouthfuls of meat for ?7.50. Not impressed. No sadly i did not have chance to complain at the time - it was 1am and we didn't eat until we got in. There is a Kebab shop near Queens Road Peckham station who cook over charcoal and I really expected this to be a similar deal but I wish I'd got a taxi to Peckham - their lamb ribs and chicken wings are to die for. And they're significantly cheaper too. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/55704-new-lebanese-restaurant/#findComment-841147 Share on other sites
85volga
Perhaps give them some time to settle in and adjust, I popped up to try , and to be fair it was fairly average and a bit disappointing . But to be fair but they appear keen honest chaps that just need to ease the kinks out. I do think there is a place on the lane for a good Ottolenghi type restaurant. Le chandelier has a North African restaurant operating out of it at night 4 nights a week but even though the food is rather good , it just somehow doesn't work, as the place is always empty whenever i have been and staff somewhat detached from the actual North African theme. Hawley
Just had a Halloumi wrap, lamb shawarma and chips to take away - very tasty and for a tenner good value. Quite upmarket as adsyb99 pointed out, certainly a notch above your usual kebab house fare. Nice friendly staff. paulj
I ate a lamb shwarma inside on Sunday evening. A stream of people waiting and some leaving - due to the inability of the 2 servers to cope... Meal was very good, but would hope they could deliver service to the numbers interested by now, as some may not return.. Infinitely better than the previous operation... and yes, Camberwell falafel is the daddy!
