Just to make people aware two guys on a black moped tried to mug me on my way home from work at 6pm. Asked for time and quickly tried to steal my phone and bag. Received a punch when I threw my phone over a local fence and consider myself very lucky it wasn't worse. Please keep an eye out if walking around this evening as police say they may target others- it's a stolen moped.

Hope you're OK Sicilia.

Throwing the phone over the fence was an interesting tactic... could have turned at badly for you. But personally I'd rather take a punch and not give them the satisfaction of stealing from me, so I personally applaud you (even if I wouldn't recommend your strategy to others!)

I Hope the thump wasn't too bad, Sicilia. Nice tactic on the phone throwing, and bear in mind if they were savage enough to throw a punch, they might very well have done that regardless of whether you complied with handing over possessions. It wouldn't be surprising if they already decided on that when they 'interviewed' you (I.e.asked the time). Violent criminals do not follow anything like the rules that we do, they don't have a sense of fairness. It's nice to know you confounded them.
You do not know how you would react in the same situation. When I was mugged getting into my car at Sainsburys DKH some years ago I ran after the guy who jumped into his car and punched him in the face and hung on to the steering wheel trying to force him to stop. Police asked me why as an 'elderly person' I did this - I said I did it as I was so angry that he had dared to take my bags.

I'm pretty sure muggers can pick out the people who

will react explosively - and avoid. Repressed anger

is something to see when it comes out in the British.

I don't want for this to turn into the usual race debate but the OP didn't mention that they were black guys did they? Not sure where the assumption came from.

Why would someone do that? It's something you see pretty much every day in South London. Why are you assuming they were black?

Not a circle that I move in thank god.

@Sicilia, sorry to hear you went through this. Good thinking (or reaction) throwing your phone over the wall. There's nothing much they could do at that point and time is not their ally so it would have been very risky for them to escalate the situation further.

I hope you're OK.

  • 1 month later...
I saw two kids with their faces covered by hoodies and scarves, driving the wrong way up the pavement in Dulwich Village - kind of near the interchange nr Audi garage. They were clearly driving a stolen moped. I tried to take a photo, but they were too quick! Hope you're okay.

    • interesting the police said "the car was in demand at the moment" what make/model is that?
    • Just be careful to know exactly what they cover and the limits. i use Many Pets and Medivet, as I think one of the vets is exceptionally good. Some of the NHV are, but I’ve had a couple I’ve not liked at all.  I need consistency and to feel that they actually care more about the animals than the money.
    • I haven't used them myself but I noticed recently that "Snoots" in Forest Hill is going unlimited primary care for £33/month, so basically a subscription. Easy access on the 176 from East Dulwich. I have no idea what it includes so read the contract! It's a chain but only 5 branches so not a mega corporate. 🤷‍♂️ https://www.snootsvet.com/find-us
