Instant messanger

Would the inclusion of an instant messanger service be a good move for the EDF or would it create an underground sub culture where threads would dwindle and IM would thrive. What do you think about this? I think it could work because there are times that you may want to carry on a conversation without bothering others. it is possible but it would have administration overheads.

I tried IM once but it really slowed down my PC so I abandoned it. Plus, I kept getting messages from people who promised they could make my penis bigger. WTF

Yeah its just the PM tool is a bit slow but I know what you mean I really meant a private chat tool like whats in facebook

Can't say I've had any slowdown using any of the IM apps on Vista - why don't forumites just agree which one to use and go with that?

Or you could just text or phone someone yo actually wanted to have a conversation with and knew well enough to warrant it. Otherwise I think PMs are fine.

Texting and phone calls = too obviously not working!

PM & IM = required work applications *cough*

And IM leads to much more natural, free-flowing conversation

It's pretty easy to integrate an IRC chat room (for those who can't figure out how to install/configure it, or a Shoutbox into a site these days, and its not too much bother to do things like registered nicks either.
