I'm sure Mr Minimum Wager would love more choice: Unfortunately it'll be a choice between working whatever hours Mr Shopkeeper demands - or getting replaced.

If a shop is open 16 hours instead of eight then that's either another employee or some much needed overtime.

My aunty died so I took the bar of Pears soap back to the 24 hour Tesco.

Whatever we think about the Sainsburys of this world, at least they are very hot on Rules / regs/ H&S - areas that local shopkeepers have a very flexible attitude to this type of thing.

Just cos theyse small businesss does not make them good people with charity in their hearts - they are still capitalists and all they really want is your money and to keep as much of it for themselves as possible.

"The traders are all for building a community and they do listen to the locals." Monica - What utter tosh - they want ?, they have no interest in community unless it serves them well.

This is why LL is a dangerous traffic ridden place sometimes - if the shops were truly bothered about community, they would press to get the area traffic free to reduce pollution and damage, but they know this would affect their money making, so they constantly harass for THEIR interests.

I know ive said this before, but you really mustnt give these "local traders" too much credit - they would sell crack to you kids if it was legal and profitable - they already do a roaring trade in Fireworks in the latter half of the year

- something that provides momentary pleasure for only the very young and the borderline insane. hardly a community service.

I did ask in SMBS foods once and the guy said that since they had children they like/need/want to finish at 6pm 'cos of bath and bedtime.

Why should people be forced to work stupid amount of overtime to earn a decent wage?!?!?!? Surely the expensive shops of ED should just pay them more!!! One dress sold in some of these shops probably pays for the staff for the whole weekend, the rest is profit.....

To be fair, I don't know that all these people are on minimum wage, I think we're jumping to conclusions... They could be very well looked after for all we know :-S

The ones at Green & Blue were taken out to eat at the best restaurant in Whitstable recently... Sounds okay to me, and hardly what Sainsbury's etc would do.

Did they get paid for theit time ? I bet they didnt

I could think of little less enticing than being dragged 2 hours down a motorway to eat with the same people I spend 5 days a week with and then at the end of it, pretend I was grateful for thr jaunt.

And the owners can claim it back as an expense I bet.
