Definitely illegal...the general rule is if you dont have to pay or subscribe its usually moody. And you're likely to get a big fat virus as a free welcome gift too.

you won't get viruses if you only download the mp3 files and no other filetypes e.g exe's!

Also switch your modem/router on and off regularly so your IP address is renewed - that way it makes it very difficult for your ISP to do you for 'illegal downloading'!

ISP's really dont care unless they are pushed into a corner

I have recently has the Bris virus from a limewire DL - not too damaging, but a difficult puppy to kill off ( Norton cant remove it BTW ) - theres a lot of shite on LM, not all of it form legitimate users either- there is more than a whisper of corporate meddling apparently

I have heard that scouring the neighgbourhood for an unsecured network is the way forward, but is theft technically / practically

amazes me that people still leave their networks unsecured.

By default netgears are on:

http://192.168.0.1

username: admin

password: password

to get on them.

Just change the admin password and change their login password. Only if you don't like them of course!

Mine's unsecured as well, of course. Securing it would seem, well, a bit rude?

Anyway it's nice to have a choice of unsecured networks when you fire up the lappie.

It's what my friend Andy did to his neighbour when he (err the neighbour) was being an insufferable, antisocial menace. Cut off his broadband in one fell swoop (well, wireless anyway).

And seriously *Bob*, it would only take one hacker to use your network or one pervert to download some child pornography for the rozzers to be at your door, leave alone the more realistic issue that most broadband packages are capped at a surprisingly low rate, and a few episodes of Eastenders on iPlayer later and your neighbour (or you) is whacked with a ?100 surcharge bill.

Turning the router off and on again probably wont give you a new IP. The ISP's set fairly long leases on them so yours may only change once every 3 months or so, though I guess it depends on the provider.

I'd definitely go for WPA2 these days as far as security goes...WEP doesn't cut it anymore and can be hacked in no time. All nice having open networks, but you wont be saying that when the fuzz come knocking!

I know, I know. I've been meaning to sort it out. It's on the list, sandwiched between repainting the front door and pruning the bush which is pushing the fence over.

Basically just stick the IP of the router into your browser (you can run 'ipconfig/all' from a DOS prompt to find it out), log on, go to Security, choose 'WPA' or 'WPA2', type a password in and hit save.

Job's a good'un.

Thats fine, just change the WPA Passphrase to a password of your choosing and hit Apply. That then becomes the password to join your network. Worth bearing in mind that it wont work if you have XP Home/2000 as it doesnt support WPA Shared Keys.

You basically use it to stream music and create online playlists you can save. Its good if you have a party or suchlike.

So I tried that.. put a new password in.

Then it wouldn't let me back in with my new password.

So I turned the router off, and (after disconnecting and connecting a few times) I got the internerd back again, but the router had reset itself to no security again. I'm on Mac (can't you tell?!)

Any more thoughts? Help to-date is most appreciated..

have a look back at that screen, does it now show a hexadecimal password?

I've noticed on my netgear that anyone connecting without a netgear dongle has to put in the whole hexadecimal password rather than the user firendly one.

It's exactly as it was before I had a go at changing it.

WPA and WEP are both inactive

The password is the same for both and is 350B014100.. same as it was.

WEP is set to 'hexadecimal'.
