I have just, at the grand old age of 28, purchased my first games console. The PS3 came with about 30 games but most of these are first person shooter games which I?m finding very difficult to master or football games which I find a bit boring. I like the idea of shooting type games but I?m guessing games with a third person view would be easier to play. Can anyone recommend any games which would suit a newbie?

Thanks

Eleanor

Thanks everyone for all of the suggestions. GTA IV and V came with the PS3 so I?ll start with those. I?ve looked into Max Payne and I can see that it is a third person shooter game so that also seems ideal and a bit easier for me. The Last of Us also looks interesting, is it a survival game? Can?t quite work it out from the online info.

SE22 ? thanks for the recommendations but I don?t think I understand everything you have written! Google is my friend ?

I?ve always been a bit anti- Tomb Raider despite having never played it. I guess I always assumed it portrayed women badly but I?ll check it out and see for myself :)

Thanks again all!

Last Of Us is a first person survival game. The story is a bit like 28 days later in some ways. You are trying to transport a girl across the city to a group of people called the Fireflies.

Basically read this article and it pretty much tells you what it's all about.

The best thing about this game is the story and the emotional content. It's really well written. Naughty Dog have always been good at these types of games, but The Last Of Us is their masterpiece. (In my opinion)

Enjoy!

Thanks Phobic3000! I just read the write up on Esquire and i'm completely sold on it! Sounds like a great game. I did a bit more research and some other reviews say its a third person game so i'm guessing you can probably change this in the settings. Only slight worry is that I watched 28 Days Later behind a pillow but I'll just have to man up.

Skyrim can be first or third person, and it's a MASSIVE world to explore.

Anything by rockstar is good, including GTA (modern city criminal stuff), Max Payne (dark broody bloke who shoots lots of people), Red Dead Redemption (cowboys).

All with very similar gameplay, so if you like one you'll probably like them all.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Skyrim sounds a bit like the land beyond the wall in GOT. I have tried GTA and enjoyed that so I reckon I'll also like Max Payne.

Went to my local game shops at lunchtime today to try and find secondhand copies of some of the games you have all mentioned but alas it's closed down! I had hoped to chat to the sales assistants in the store but looks like I'll have to settle for Amazon.

Find a cash coverters type shop (there is one on Penge High Street, probably one in Peckham or Camberwell somewhere). They do games dirt cheap. And yeah, any Game shop does second hand.

And seriously, if you like GTA, get Red Dead Redemption, it's the nuts, and even has downloadable content of Undead zombies. Cowboys and zombies!!!!!

Damn it, I want to play them now, but I do not get any gaming time at home anymore.

I think there's a CEX or similar in Brixton as well so I'll pop in as pass through quite often. Thanks for the ebay suggestion and link :) Otta I can't watch the gameplay videos you've posted (still at work) but I'll bid on the basis of the stills alone! I literally just want to get home and game. I can already see the PS3 replacing my obsession with box sets.

The game I spent most time playing (by far) was Oblivion. I have no idea how many hours, but it was A LOT.

Oblivion was the predecessor of Skyrim.

But Red Dead Redemption definitely in the top 5.

Fable games are fun too.

The original Fable was on earlier consoles, then 2 and 3 on PS3 / XBox 360. But then a year or two ago they released the original (updated) game on these consoles. It's great, as is 2. Not really played 3, it's one of a pile of at least 10 games that I barely scratched the surface of before parenthood stole my game time.

    • Big black Irish wolfhound wandering around Peckham rye on the grassy area near the smaller playground (not the cafe one). Couldn’t see an obvious owner, he had a collar on and very placid but no details on collar. He wandered off (and I wasn’t in a position to stay) but please can folks keep an eye out if he’s still wandering about later in case he has been abandoned. Park ranger numbers were not working 😞

    • There are "plans" to build more reservoirs, with physical work yet to be started, with the first hoped to be completed by 2036, and a second by 2040, then time is needed for them to fill so add at least another 12 months on. However, if the 1.5 million homes are built by 2028, each averaging 2 people occupying them.(some will be more, some will be less) then thats 3 million people showering, bathing and using water.  Therefore there is a massive demand that will strain our current inferstructure between 2028 and 2037 (nearly ten years) plus all those homes will need electricity, as the ambition is to phase gas usage out, which will take just as much time to reinforce the network to cover, let alone add in the ability to cope with green production electricity that needs to be moved from wind and solar farms to where it is most needed.  Therefore, is the current plan to build more homes, regardless of where they are,  potentially going to have serious ramifications on already creaking networks ?
