spadetownboy
best night for me was at the edt in 1998 there was a charity gig for one of the local schools the likes of jo brand, steve frost, malcolm hardie, julian cleary and al murray all made guest appearances plus a couple of others i cant remember.highlight of the evening was the finale when hardie and 2 others performed the balloon dance,as i was front row i tried successfully to stop myself choking with laughter all the while worrying about the performers pubes dropping into my pint. Keef
I couldn't believe it a couple of years ago when I was in Teneriffe with a couple of friends (I know I know), and there where about 3 RCB impersonaters doing the circuits..... and going down well.....That said, there were a lot more Northerners than Southerners there, and they're generally stupid..... ;-) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/642-comedy-in-the-area/page/2/#findComment-15348 Share on other sites
fonson
Yes, out of order but still very funny. Dave Chappelle got a lot of stick from the black veiwers in the US with his near the knuckle sketches. They are very funny but make you wince at the same time. He however is picking fun at black (he is black, just in case you do not know who he is)stereotypes.......eg. The Black supremacist Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/642-comedy-in-the-area/page/2/#findComment-15356 Share on other sites
Joe likes dinner
I've been out to much comedy in South London recently, althogh in my heady thespo student days i used to be in an improv group that did shows at the Canal Cafe Theatre in Little Venice, which was a lot of fun. Proper improv, no plans, pre-written jokes, just one microphone, a bell and an audience.Would recommend a trip to the canal cafe to see the news review on a Sunday - claims to be the longest ongoing comedy show in london and has an impressive list of performers and contributors from over the years - canal cafe was also home to The League of Gentlemen in the early days. For anyone whose not been up there, its above the bridge house pub and combined with a stroll along the canal to regents park, can make for a splendid sunday out of ED! TillieTrotter
I remember many years ago watching my sister-in-law to be doing a news revue at the canal cafe, cute little venue. dulwichmum
I just love stand up, I went once a week for over ten years. I saw Eddie Izzard at The Commedy Store and he was just outstanding in about 1996. I love Eddie Bannon - he is a complete scream, I haven't seen him for years. I was working hard all day, so I am afraid I haven't been able to comment and now I feel like I have arrived when the party is over! Sorry. Jamie
On the subject of Comedy some friends of mine who are East Dulwich locals are performing their cabaret Popcorn Club from 17th-20th May at Hoxton Hall. see www.popcornclub.co.uk for more info. We are trying to find a local place to do these in East Dulwich as they put on an amazing show with a really diverse group of cabaret, alternative circus, Physical comedy etc....Not sure if anyone saw last weeks Time Out about the Monkey lady. Saw her a couple of months before that article came out at a Popcorn club and have never laughed so hard in all my life. If anyone knows of a local venue (or if anyone is a Dulwich Player and can talk to me about giving up one of their evenings at Constitutional hall a month) then please get in touch. bawdy-nan
Have you been to the Ivy House - just across Peckham Rye in Nunhead. Its fantatstic and has an amazing back room complete with little stage and lots of red and gold. Would do beautifully for such an evening. I went to see Dulwich Ukelele Club play there around Christmas time. Packed to the gills and whilst the strummers themselves weren't bad the evening was stolen by the support act a one-legged pensioner who sang short dirty ditties and got the whole place roused in a sing-a-long. Truly, I have never experienced the like of it before or since. In any case - you should check it out - its a great venue. argibargy
Best local comedy by far is a journey on the 78 bus - sit at the back and watch. It?s hilarious :-) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/642-comedy-in-the-area/page/2/#findComment-16730 Share on other sites
