Well as a nation we don't on the whole seem much concerned with civil liberties, and we seem to have had a procession of home secretaries who eroded liberties, locked up an increasing number of people (with little rehabilitation), and pushed through an extraordinary number of laws that perhaps suggest institutional paranoia.

Sadly, a vox pop of the public would suggest the majority of them want these restrictiosn to feel "safer"

then again, tha vast majority of the public want to see hanging restored & paedphiles tortured to death with pliers.

I dont care about JS, she is probabaly at nthe better end ofthe shitbag politico spectrum, but its tortology innit

We have moved from an era of steadfast unbending party ethos to the middle ground of bland E-Z listening MOR parties, each willing to sell its greasy worthless soul for a few votes.

I had no love for the Ole Skool Labour Vs Conservative bedrock of the 20th century, but at least you knew how to differentiate between them on a facile basis. You knew where you stood with both these shitbag parties.

Now there is more choice of essentially the same product

200 different flavours of a vanilla ice cream isnt much a choice at all.The media experts and marketeers have commodified politics and made it another product to be sold and consumed.

You vote for these scummers, you rage at the laughable expense claims as directed by the media, you think that placing your little mark on a bit of paper every now and then will make a difference

it doesnt & it wont

Very much like Sainbury's versus Tesco.

I'd vote for a party that abolished first past the post in favour of some form of proportional representation, and that introduced a bill of rights. Unfortunately any party with any chance of winning under the present system is unlikely to implement the former (once they get into office).

    • Of course they do, watching cookery shows and buying cook books is a national pastime. However you raise a good point that some people claim they are time poor and end up eating out / takeaways as sometimes a quick macciedee is cheaper and easier than making a quick nutrious family meal.  However to put it in balance, not many people have the knowledge, confidence and time to cook Persian so good luck to team persepolis on this venture.
    • London doesn’t have a lot of Argentinian places specialising in empanadas, which suggests demand isn’t that great. There are many neighbourhoods with none at all or even nearby.  So for a mini-chain like Chango (several branches in SW London) to open here where there’s already a well established family run place doing the same feels a bit off.  I’ll be giving Chacarero my ongoing custom.
    • This is so helpful, everyone, thank you. @green bean Yes we have just (as of yesterday) installed the same external blinds you mention! We already had blackout blinds and we now have the external awnings too. Of course that will guarantee the end of the summer sunshine but I can see that they're going to be helpful as they let the light through but not the glare of the sun - I'm fed up of working in darkness with both the blackout blinds closed on sunny days. We'll see how we go with those for a bit but I reckon we'll get a couple of quotes from the other recommendations in case we end up going the whole hog. @penfold Love the idea of getting solar+batteries to offset the electricity usage so will look into that.  Thanks, all.
