You must remember, I was wearing jeans, flared they were.

It was me alright and what's more it's got the free mask as well. Sweeeet.

Britain seems to have an unhealthy obsession with crime. Pumped-up on television programmes consisting solely of roughly-compiled instances of gratuitous violence captured on CCTV, accompanied by a morose voiceover and a dark, menacing trancey soundtrack. The lines between what's useful and informative and what's sensationalist and mildly hysterical are often blurred.

At the risk of being a foolish bait-taker, I don't think people get lambasted when they give sensible descriptions of criminals, i.e. descriptions that would actually allow someone to recognise a criminal. A good example would be the recent 'dodgy blokes' thread. I think if one had read that thread and saw the people in question then one could be reasonably certain of a positive I.D. It's when people use one-word descriptions that cover a significant proportion of the population that others pick up on it. A one-word description won't help a criminal be caught, but it could do wonders to reinforce a stereotype.

Moos (who should know better)

Fair point Moos, but the problem is labelling someone a criminal when there is no evidence that a crime has been committed. On that "dodgy blokes" thread someone said that they might have simply been having a look around the area and that may have indeed been the case yet the impression is of yet another unsettling incident having taken place in our area.

Citizen, in that particular example you could be right (although the behaviour did sound very strange to me). But my point is that it was a good and recognisable description. If someone says 'I was burgled by two black guys' then I don't think anyone could use that description to help solve the crime. And that is exactly the labelling problem that you refer to.

(I think we're agreeing with each other, by the way).

Au contraire, Blackadder. There are very few clowns (qua: clowns*) in the East Dulwich area, so this fulfils my requirement that a description suffice to catch the criminal. Forgive my usage of a tired old EDF hilarity, but if you were to say that you had had an organic sausage thrown in your face by a thirty-something, designer-jeans-clad, sunglasses-adorned, Bugaboo-pushing, middle-class Mummy then I'd have to pull you up for perpetuating a stereotype without actually helping narrow down the relevant population much.

*In other words, I mean people dressed as clowns and employed in circuses rather than any reference to posters on the Forum in general.

The serious point of reporting suspected crime on a public forum needs special attention. A separate section for such threads has been ruled out. I think everyone should resist the temption to do it. If you witness/experience or suspect a crime, phone the police, then text your mates. Posting it on the forum is not the same as texting/phoning your friends. If you have to use the forum, use the pm facility

Assuming that people aren't calling the police, texting friends, making the dinner and then using the forum, of course.

    • I’m not a Gail’s fan but there’s no reason a business shouldn’t open on Christmas Day. However, nobody should be compelled to work the day which, given the widespread coverage of Gail’s questionable employment practices, has to be a possibility here.  The only business I ever use on the 25th is maybe a pub and that’s a rarity these days but buses running would be very welcome for visiting etc. But the swings in the park should definitely remain chained up. Are parks even open on Christmas Day?
    • To be honest, pal, it's not good being a fan of a local business and then not go there. One on hand, the barber shop literally next door to Romeo Jones started serving coffee. The Crown and Greyhound and Rocca serve coffee. Redemption Coffee opened up not far away, and then also Megan's next door to that. DVillage was serving coffee (but wasn't very popular), as was Au Ciel (which is). Maybe also Heritage Cheese, I don't know. There's also Flotsam and Jetsam doing coffee and sandwiches at Dulwich Picture Gallery in the other direction. The whole of Dulwich Village serves coffee. And yet on the other hand, there are enough punters to support all good coffee shops. With the exception of Rocca and Megan's (which are both big spaces) and C&G (which does coffee like everything else - slow and with bad service), all these places regularly get queues out the door. Gail's often has big queues and yet very few people crossed the street to Romeo Jones (which was much better)... Half the staff at Gail's are perfectly fine and efficient. The other half are pretty offhand and rude. It's certainly not welcoming or friendly service. But they're certainly hard working, and no doubt raking the money in for Luke Johnson...
    • Well according to a newspaper article, Gail’s is opening 10 shops in London,,, yup Dulwich is named 10/5 I seem to recall with others in London opening at 7 am…!, Guess that is to capture workers coming off all night shift. Offering free mince pies until they run out.. So very sad to hear about Romeo Jones… been a customer since the opening, any idea where Patrick has gone or details… please pm me.    What is going to be in its place…. Will be around in Jan…umm village is changing….
    • interesting the police said "the car was in demand at the moment" what make/model is that?
