I think a single thread would get far too jumbled if there's more than one incident at a time being discussed. Also some of the new crime posts that pop up are from new or infrequent users so I doubt they will know that they should only be posting in one thread.

I don't have any problem at all with people telling others about crimes which have taken place in our local area, it's good to know what's going on and it reminds us to stay vigilent.


The problem is that the threads aren't allowed to die off, people keep on posting on them for days and days, even if it's a minor incident. And ironically the anti-crime-posting forumites are just as guilty of this as anyone!

Well, the RAF flew their Hercules aircraft over my apartment last night at about 12.05am practicing low flying.


Not heard a siren in ages


Top news, someone broke the pavilion window with a cricket ball during practice.

sofiesofa, fair point, but new users often post new threads and they get directed to where they should look. It works ok on some threads, I think it's at least worth a go. You just quote something about the "incident" that you want to goss about. I can see why admin isn't mad-keen on another room (although The Incident Room does sound kinda cool).


I've almost started a thread and then cancelled it about 5 times this morning, because

a) it won't get used - those that have started their curtain twitch threads already will keep using them

and

b) I give it less than an hour before ????, HonaloochieB, *Bob* or the most recent incarnation of Snorky (I've lost track of his new identity) turn it into a massive pisstake and the point gets lost.


Perhaps I could appeal to those that start the threads: next time you want to start one, make it more generic? Perhaps ED Neighbourhood Watch: You'll never guess what I can see happening over the road... (just to be clear, I'm completely serious)

Not sure why some of you lot seem hell bent on applying what is really a form of censorship to our fine forum. In my opinion, if people want to post about having heard a siren once in Lordship Lane back in 1992, let them do it - however irrelevant and uninteresting you think it is. If there's no interest no one will reply and they'll get the message. That's the whole beauty of user generated content!


'Incident' threads quite consistently get a lot of interest so why not allow others to indulge in what floats their boat?


Reading about an incident on the forum and adding your two pence is no different in my mind to reading the newspaper which is filled with macabre, voyeuristic info which is more often than not totally irrelevant to the individual.

"A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing" And that is precisely what we get with all the "incidents" threads - a load of conjecture, suggestion, intimation, guesswork and basic prejudice masquerading as fact. Its a fertile ground for anyone wanting to stir things up. Some people are suggesting that it's good to have a heads-up about what is going on in our area but you have to ask yourself whether the information you are getting is accurate. I suggest that all these threads merge together to create a skewed picture. It's a bit like when "Eastenders" producers claim that it is an accurate piece of social realism. Rather its a distillation of all the worst bits of life. Fun, gossipy and exciting maybe, but far from realism.

There is often the feeling that this board is a forum for a bunch of good people who all know each other and we are just passing info amongst friends. It's not. It's a public place, open to everyone. We don't know who is writing and we don't know who is readiing.

If you see a crime - call the police, text your mates and if you must use the forum, pm your friends.

Perhaps time to be moved to the 'about the forum' section. . . . given that this thread does not contain any ED news/gossip or information


ps can't see that a separate incident/crime room would work - there'd be barely anything left in the main section aside from threads about shops closing down etc



Do you know what censorship is? I haven't seen any post removed or anyone banned for saying anything. What a ridiculous charge


I am accusing some threads and posts as being curtain-twitching, boring, possibly damaging and very very very dull, and have called for them to be given their own section. Just as the family section was created and that was a success. I haven't heard many family members saying they were censored for it


as for the accusation I just levelled - I have been called far worse on here. I have never cried censorship or foul

Actually BN5 I don't think I've ever posted on a 'we'll all be murdered in our beds thread'.

But if necessary I'll turn 'Queens' on Quids, *Bob* and whoever Snorky is this week.

I'll sing like a canary.


If I see a thread that is alerting me to the sound of a siren that isn't either Giggirl or Moos then I'll give it the old school swerve.

I think SM makes a good point though, if a thread is posing a question rather than giving information it's unlikely to be of much interest.

The best way to deal with these is to ignore them to death until they sink into the silt on the last page or Admin butchers them.

I'm not going to mention any names or 'incidents' that have taken place but am I the only one who's cynical enough to admit that they think that some of the more vague 'incidents' have been made up by someone with a wild and lonely imagination.

Just got round to having a look at this thread. I see you have interpreted the use of the word 'censorship' in quite an emotive way. I'm not remotely interested in controlling what others post on this Forum - the Admin steps in whenever he/ she perceives there to be some gross infridgement - still find it a bit bizarre that some people get their knickers in a twist about people's 'dull' posts.


Anyway, I agree with the person who said this thread should be moved to the 'About the Forum' section (didn't know that existed before).

    • Most churches rent out halls for children's' parties but rarely adult parties, Christ Church only does afternoon parties,   The East Dulwich Community centre hires out halls to 9 pm only and all music needs to be on a sound restrictor as is in a residential area. St Johns with St Clements have a small hall but not sure if they allow adult parties. Nunhead Green has a newish community centre with a couple of different size halls. Most places seem to charge around £40 ph  with a deposit of £100/200 (returned if no damage or excess cleaning needed.
    • Hello, Recently there have been various comments made on the forum which have resulted in heated discussions being had. I for one, hold up my hand and wanted to personally thank whoever is keeping the forum going.. remember when it was likely to close. We are all adults and should known when it is right to continue or just ignore or if really feel it necessary comment via pm. I have had a long relationship with the forum and have bought, sold, offered advice and in deed made friends on the forum over the years. It is a public forum after all and everyone is entitled to express their opinion and is also free. I am not as tech minded as most but with the season of good will approaching and-knowing in this economic climate how many people are  struggling, I  thought it would be a lovely idea, to perhaps set up a just giving page to raise funds for a local charity who might appreciate a contribution towards their Christmas festivities… On a practical side, might just be to complicated to administer as I am sure all have charities that we support so my other thought was not me, as I am useless but to set up a just giving page and whatever monies are raised, perhaps contribute to the festivities that use to be run by local shops or whatever.. Maybe even use a local church hall and just make it special for perhaps folk that find it difficult to access events or no access for say wheel chair users.. guess really, one is looking for guidance from the church and of course volunteers. Shoot me down if you must or feel the need but this is my view and no, sadly I won’t be around in the months before Christmas but can help remotely.
