King's college hospital - birth registration

Recommended Posts

I did it at the Camberwell registry office. I think if you look online it tells you that you can, you just need to ring up for an appointment (and I was told there was a shorter wait in Camberwell which was handy given my disorganisation!)

We did the same when we had our first at St Thomas', registered at Southwark and they send it all to Lambeth. If I remember rightly we then received the certificate in the post. Second time (Kings) we just went to Lambeth as it seemed more straight forward.

Both Kings and Tommies are in Lambeth so in theory all babies born in those hospitals should be registered there. In reality it means that Lambeth registry office is inundated and waiting times can be lengthy. Due to this Lambeth have done a deal with neighbouring boroughs so that if you live in Southwark or Lewisham (for example) you can register at your own (quieter) register office (plus Southwark RO is prettier ;) ).

Don't get me wrong, I was married at Southwark, as were my olds (and my wife's olds as it goes). In fact I was registered there as a baby too (but I was born Dulwich Hospital so defo the correct borough / district in those days). Very fond of the place, but the office bit upstairs is all a bit cold. Lambeth is the town hall, so it's just a more impressive building.

Brixton often has long wait times, so you can see the Lambeth registrar at Southwark. They are there twice a week I believe. My daughter was born in January at kings and I was told there was an 8 week wait for an appointment in Brixton. They did suggest Southwark and I had her birth certificate within two days.

If you go to Peckham, you still need to book in to see the Lambeth Registar, just at the Southwark register office. I registered the birth of all 3 of my children there as they were born in Southwark (at home) but this didn't seem to be that common as the registrar recognised me on the 2nd and 3rd visits. She said she didn't do many births, mostly deaths :( I was also surprised by the lack of waiting time, being given a next day appointment each time.

I gave birth at kings 18 months ago and was told that I had to register at Lambeth, in Brixton, as Kch is in Lambeth (other side of the road and it would be in Southwark!). No choice!

Would much prefer to go to Southwark. Will do that this time for sure, based on my new knowledge!
