Herne Tavern... don't take your kids

Nope. Kids are great. As long as they're well behaved when in public places (and especially in a pub environment.) Clearly yours weren't/aren't, so don't be surprised that most reasonable people would back the Herne Tavern here.

The "scant" information you mention is enough to make a call on this one. Sort your kids out or don't go to these places with them.

Given his comments I can only agree that it seems that families with young children are definitely not welcome, which as a father who might bring his young kid myself is curious but fine now at least thats clear. Also, i think the reaction of most of the usual punters above also shows its not exactly a welcoming environment for kids anyway ?!!!!

However,as other bars don't seem to have an issue at least there is lots of alternative choice so hopefully something for everyone :-)

Adults shouldn't risk getting into an argument with children IMHO

You see it online sometimes and it's just full of pitfalls.

Go through the parents/responsible adult.

I agree with the Herne Tavern on this. In my eyes pubs are adult priority areas. If kids are allowed to be in there then they should behave like adults or leave (ie sit down at a table and eat and drink rather than running around). Not saying the OP did this but I see to many parents letting their kids run rampage and somehow imposing their annoying kids on the public, and getting all highly strung when they are told off.

Now that I know HT has this policy I will seek refuge there!!

Nope, the park is for them- climbing frames, games and the freedom to play and make lots of noise.

I walked past the Herne on Saturday afternoon and considered going in but remembered past experiences of children and so avoided. I didn't realise the playground was no longer there or I would have been straight in.

Some parents have a sense of entitlement that their little darlings should be allowed to play wherever they like......or more that they fancy going to the pub and shouldn't feel discouraged because they have children in tow.

The Herne manager may have been stern in his approach but it seems to have worked.

I would therefore support the subject of this post "Herne Tavern......don't take your kids".

Agree with some of your comments binkyliliput but the manager was very rude actually and that's not right.

I totally get how kids running around can be a real annoyance for others but to be fair there was a playground in there! And I'm yet to find a playground where kids don't shout/ scream/ have fun! Maybe the group didn't realise it had gone - and I'm sure the kids must have been confused too- so they probably just ran around instead

I think the problem here is that maybe prior experiences or comments or extremes instances of behaviour have built up and the manager let loose on a Little group who were unfortunate enough to have their little darlings being a bit rowdy at that particular time. They didn't deserve to be spoken to like that and I'm sure the manager could have handled it much better by polite request,and I'm sure the parents would have responded appropriately and the issue would have been sorted.

I gave up on The Herne because the garden used to be full of kids screetching and running around being ignored by their parents.

Its a shame its now getting a bit chilly to enjoy the new garden BUT I will defy go and check the place out again.

Also like other posters I find it a bit odd to take 5year olds in a pub after school when theres a lovely park just steps away-I would just get drinks from a supermarket and enjoy them in the park whilst watching the kids.

Forgive us for taking our kids to a pub which up until very recently had a playground, a kids menu and separate gated section for kids, to give them their tea.

And if they're that precious about their new garden then why weren't we warned at the bar the playground wasn't there anymore so we then wouldn't have wasted our money.

But most importantly the aggresive verbal assault, which fortunately was witnessed and has been confirmed by a couple of people on this thread has no place in a pub at (4.30pm) which on it's very own website says "Children are welcome in the garden and dining area until 8pm."

Seriously if they over-react that much to 3 five year olds, I dread to think what they would they do with a group of drunk adults making too much noise!

err does that mean your kids were wrecking their bushes?!? If so I definitely do not have any sympathy for you. If you were otherwise distracted whilst your kids were running around wrecking the place and were not under control then the manager had every right to flip. They are your responsibility and there should not be some sort of shared responsibility because you choose to take them out in public.

Just because something used to be something it does not mean that you still treat it like one when it is no longer. The Bishop used to have pool tables when it was the Foresters. It does not mean that i rock up with my pool cues and start firing balls into people!!
