Community initiative for a cleaner Peckham town centre

Recommended Posts

The local community is tackling Peckham town centre waste problems and how to utilise recycling opportunities. This is a joint initiative by Copeland Park http://copelandpark.com, Peckham Vision http://www.peckhamvision.org and the Rye Lane Traders? Association (RLTA) http://www.peckhamvision.org/wiki/RLTA, supported by a small grant from the Council?s High Street Challenge scheme.

We are looking for a social researcher to work with us on the project: more info here: https://www.facebook.com/PeckhamVision/posts/1000823223273874

Further information and the detailed project brief are available from [email protected]. The deadline for proposals is 16th October. Please pass this information on to others who may be interested.

If you have suggestions about improvements in waste management and recycling in the town centre you can email [email protected] and / or post comments here.

Eileen,

I really don't think it needs a committee! Just fine folk who drop litter and tell the owners/workers of shops that litter and fly tip to stop and fine them if they don't. Tell them about the facilities that exist already and then do it a few times again so that the penny drops. Leave literature for the owner and make sure that s/he understands why it's important and what penalties there are for non-compliance. Get the local newspapers to report on it and make a point of thanking those that play by the rules.

If you want to get to work immediately, get down to Choumert Road and hang around for about fifteen minutes and you'll see up-close SE15 littering/tipping at its most blatant. (I did my little bit a couple of hours ago by collecting a few cans and putting them in one of the all-too-lacking litter bins nearby.)

It really is not difficult and should not require yet another layer of bureaucracy, let alone another post - paid or otherwise.

I agree with Nigello. Littering is an individual's choice and the rest of us should not have to put up with or subsidise bad manners. There is someone who fairly regularly dumps stuff on the bin outside the newsagents on Crystal Palace Road at night...invariably foxes or cats rip the bags open and the rubbish is strewn all over the pavement and road.

I don't think anyone denies that a cleaner, greener Peckham is a good idea but I do think that most right-minded people are sceptical of "community committees" rather than the use of already established laws, social norms and council wherewithal to get the job done.

My Pooterish litter-picking won't solve the problem but it does demonstrate that immediate action can have an immediate effect, even if it is limited in scope and scale. If only one in ten of us reported grot spots, asked shop owners to dispose of rubbish along established guidelines and keep our own immediate environments clean - imagine the effect.

This does not negate the need for, nor detract from the good work of, the authorities, which should be contacted when there is a problem with litter, fly tipping or the local environment.

I don't really understand how you can think this is not necessary. Rye Lane is disgusting due to the fly tipping and business waste that lines the pavements. It makes sense to me that someone should be appointed to take charge of stopping it.

don't we pay Council Tax to the Council to enforce this?

Perhaps the rubbish adds to Peckhams trendy charms

Where are the Council Officers?

It is not necessary at all. The rules are in place, the authority exists - all it takes is the continued and steady application of the current powers.

It's this kind of committeeisation that makes my heart sink and puts me off any kind of organised "community" involvement. It oozes treacle-speed progress and a love of process over action.

Just ask yourself, "what would your mother have done?" - where "mother" represents any common sensical person who doesn't suffer from any form of cultural/social cringe - and you may well find that she would have either had a word herself and/or contacted the council over transgressors.

    • thanks Jenijenjen and all - yes, i remember walking or taking the bus from the elephant (where i was working) to Camberwell to get there.  I think Tim - who's still at Franklin's -  was there in those days, and the woman who ran the cafe!  Other food places that i remember fondly are the ones in Neal's Yard (with the Hunkin sculpture that you could put a coin in ) and the basement lunch place at the Tottenham Court Road junction with Hanway Street...
    • Did you try the emergency number posted above? It mentions lift breakdowns over the festive period outside the advertised  times. Hope you got it sorted x
    • People working in shops should not be "attempting to do the bill in their head." Nor if questioned should they be  trying to "get to an agreeable number." They should be actually (not trying to) getting to the correct number. I'm afraid in many cases it is clearly more than incorrect arithmetic. One New Year's Eve in a restaurant (not in East Dulwich but quite near it) two of us were charged for thirty poppadoms. We were quite merry when the bill came, but not so merry as to not notice something amiss. Unfortunately we have had similar things happen in a well established East Dulwich restaurant we no longer use. There is also a shop in East Dulwich which is open late at night. It used not to display prices on its goods (that may have changed). On querying the bill, we several times found a mistake had been made. Once we were charged twice for the same goods. There is a limit to how many times you can accept a "mistake".  There is also a limit to how many times you can accept the "friendly" sweet talking after it.
