Nothing at all!

I think the contender for the next thread will be, "unsalted, organic halloumi - what's the point?" or similar.

Ah, the perils of which mixer to use to avoid pretension - unhappily this dilemma extends to garnish also. I'm often stumped when, having added a dash of Cawston Press Elderflower Lemonade to my Grey Goose, I am confronted with both kumquat and limequat - greedily I often plump for a little of both however gaudy the result.

Aah indeed - hand-folded origami croissants (locally sourced of course) - I like the idea - I wil consider them for 'Dulwich Crease' the name of my new shop.

P.S. has anyone seen any vacant slots on LL I could lease?

"Croissants that use any other type of fat (even if it's something like 95% butter and 5% margarine) cannot be straight (and will usually be in the iconic crescent shape). Here's the thing, though ? even though all straight croissants are made from butter, not all butter croissants are straight."- 12 Jan 2015

I so nearly looked it up first, but I thought what the hell Post & be dammned

That learned me, and you too by the look of your research

Now WE are better informed on the facinating subject of 'Croissants'

OK then, we've established that certain baked goods (particularly those of Continental origin) make you feel patronised, but now it's almost that time of year to face the thorny issue of the mince pie...

Certainly they're home-grown, nothing to complain about there... BUT, do you go with the bland, mass produced cack of Mr Kipling etc, the condescension of the supermarket 'premium' ranges ("Taste the Difference"? Yeah, about two quid extra a box, that's the bloody difference. "Finest" range? Really? If that's the finest you can do you can just f*ck right off).

Or do you go all artisan with the likes of Gail's, Konditor and Cooke, etc and pay a shitload per individual pie? Fairly tasty, but leaving a vaguely hollow feeling of foolishness for having paid well over the odds for something that surely can't require a huge amount of skill to produce?

I may just go to Fortnums or Harrods for mine. If I'm gonna be ripped off I'm doing it properly, and might even get a tasty pie out of it

Mince Pies has been done on here before. They don't patronise me per se, but they can make disproportionately angry for no reason. I think we've discussed the whole idea of puff pastry versus boxed etc. not sure we've pontificated on the whole 'finest' or 'very best' or whatever they choose to call them varitities though.

I personally do not want to pay over the odds for something I can make at home. But then, if you look at a mince pie it's a seasonal treat which contains multiple facets to its creation (unlike a croissant which isn't half as filling or rich in texture and yet somehow manages to patronise the person eating it more, figure that one out?).

Because they have too much money and time on their hands..

They want to be seen... and look important. Otherwise they would have a coffee and croissant at home..

Like the old days before mobile phones and laptops when these people would of carried a Filo-fax with them

where ever they went.

I know you're just taking the piss now, but even so.. that's a bit like saying you go to the pub or curry house to be seen and look important. Rather than having a beer and/or curry at home.

Mince pies... my mum's home made mincemeat plus shop-bought puff pastry (sometimes have to add an extra dash of booze to the mincemeat). Can knock out 48 of them in an evening easily. Delicious!

Not even remotely the same thing...

I'm retired and at home all day.. for hours on end.

I go out to the pub in the evening to see other people not to be seen... and not to look important

I'm cooking everyday. Making breakfast, Lunch, Evening meals.

So I go out to eat in the evening for a treat and a break from cooking.

And although I might check my e-mail on my ipod I don't sit in the restaurant / pub Posing with my Laptop.

Taking up space for hours on end.

I often get a T/A Curry which lasts for two meals.. So I do have curries at home..

...and I have a large stock of beer, Spirits & Liqueurs ..

Although I do not like much drinking alone / at home.

So I'm not taking the piss..

What about when you're performing your card tricks in public? Hardly the shrinking violet then Foxy.

Most people doing this are self-employed, work from home, and just like you are bored being at home all the time and want to 'be' with people. It's annoying when you get some loud mouth conducting a business call, but you get that anywhere these days. Just politely tell them to shut the fook up :)...

    • That said, organised displays could be on Saturday before and after and the actual day, and private ones could just not have the loud ones.  It’s all down to accessibility and people caring/not caring
    • The problem this year is that 5th November falls on a Wednesday. So some places will be bringing their "bonfire night" forward to Saturday 1st and some will be knocking it back to Saturday 8th and there'll probably be a few that just go with Wednesday 5th anyway. If you're doing a public display, having it on a weekend gets more crowds. Which basically means a solid week of fireworks.
    • Fireworks in this area do feel totally incessant at this time of year, almost every evening there is terrible noise. I feel great concern for wildlife, pets (I have a senior cat who hates them), as well as people who struggle with PTSD etc. Last year I even had people setting them off in front of my home. Tonight and yesterday evening have been particularly bad. Is there anything we can do as a community to prevent this? What action can we take? Surely we shouldn’t be expected to just put up with it every year for weeks on end!
    • Does anyone know what time tonight's events, the second night of the new phenomenon of Halloween Fireworks, end? These do sound too major to be anything but large- scale organised events and they are loud, very loud. So anyone, for their own reasons, that dislikes or objects to this level of noise for the next x amount of hours, really has no choice in the matter! Could those addicted to loud bangs possibly have a kind of silent disco setup with the bangs sent through headphones, so the rest of us could be spared?
