uncleglen
The ingredients in croissants work, via the tongue, on the endorphin pathways in the brain which gives a pleasurable experience...fat, sugar, no-one stands a chance unless they have an iron will... Louisa
The only time sugar free red bull is any good is when someone who likes mixing it with a vodka chilled, happens to love the taste but be diabetic. I do love red bull myself, I'm often on a bit of a high after four or five cans in a row.Louisa. maxxi
Ah, the perils of which mixer to use to avoid pretension - unhappily this dilemma extends to garnish also. I'm often stumped when, having added a dash of Cawston Press Elderflower Lemonade to my Grey Goose, I am confronted with both kumquat and limequat - greedily I often plump for a little of both however gaudy the result. Louisa
I'd rather not be Seabag, I'd rather they were kept confined to small cafe's in Paris as a breakfast serving than littering the shelves of our nearest tesco/sainsbury local. DulwichFox
All Croissants whether straight or curved have pointed ends that point in different directions.. ... and a point in every direction is the same as having no point at all. OK then, we've established that certain baked goods (particularly those of Continental origin) make you feel patronised, but now it's almost that time of year to face the thorny issue of the mince pie...Certainly they're home-grown, nothing to complain about there... BUT, do you go with the bland, mass produced cack of Mr Kipling etc, the condescension of the supermarket 'premium' ranges ("Taste the Difference"? Yeah, about two quid extra a box, that's the bloody difference. "Finest" range? Really? If that's the finest you can do you can just f*ck right off). Or do you go all artisan with the likes of Gail's, Konditor and Cooke, etc and pay a shitload per individual pie? Fairly tasty, but leaving a vaguely hollow feeling of foolishness for having paid well over the odds for something that surely can't require a huge amount of skill to produce?I may just go to Fortnums or Harrods for mine. If I'm gonna be ripped off I'm doing it properly, and might even get a tasty pie out of it Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/75983-croissants-what-is-the-point/page/4/#findComment-907157 Share on other sites
Louisa
Mince Pies has been done on here before. They don't patronise me per se, but they can make disproportionately angry for no reason. I think we've discussed the whole idea of puff pastry versus boxed etc. not sure we've pontificated on the whole 'finest' or 'very best' or whatever they choose to call them varitities though. I personally do not want to pay over the odds for something I can make at home. But then, if you look at a mince pie it's a seasonal treat which contains multiple facets to its creation (unlike a croissant which isn't half as filling or rich in texture and yet somehow manages to patronise the person eating it more, figure that one out?).Louisa. I go out to the pub in the evening to see other people not to be seen... and not to look important I'm cooking everyday. Making breakfast, Lunch, Evening meals. So I go out to eat in the evening for a treat and a break from cooking. And although I might check my e-mail on my ipod I don't sit in the restaurant / pub Posing with my Laptop. Taking up space for hours on end. I often get a T/A Curry which lasts for two meals.. Most people doing this are self-employed, work from home, and just like you are bored being at home all the time and want to 'be' with people. It's annoying when you get some loud mouth conducting a business call, but you get that anywhere these days. Just politely tell them to shut the fook up :)...
