I think we can safely say that there are quite a few foodies on the forum. Acres of pixel ink has been used discussing merits and demerits of ED eateries, so I thought it might be good to have a room dedicated to those places in the rest of the world where we've loved or hated the food.

I won't bore anyone with the sheer awfulness of Fifteen so will kick off with the Greenhouse where I took the misssus for an anniversary meal.

Delicious in that very foamy way of so many places now, but well worth a visit, superb service, ?65 for three courses (1 michelin star remember) they throw in some nice palate cleansers and amuse bouches and an almost intimidatingly awesome wine list.

Nice decking too.

I had a superb meal recently at Champor-champor near London Bridge. I had been half expecting to hate the place (fusion type food, camp/kitsch interior), but the food was genuinely outstanding - this dish in particular:

"Deepfried catfish fillet; soft-roast aubergine topped with sweet & spicy sambal; Thai sweet basil leaves"

2 for 1 deal with Taste London card also made it pretty reasonable.

In Barcelona on Saturday and after watching the castellers had great tapas at L'Anxoveta in Gracia - the stand-out dish was braised beef cheek, although the "secrets d'iberic' were pretty good too.

It's an actual apple tree on LL, so in ED. Free food.

'Fraid you'll need a ladder to get to the rest though!

And on topic, St John.

Oh good call. On the former there's a plum tree outside my door with enough plums to make about a thousand jam jars on it, tall ladder needed though.

To follow Santerme's lead in going further afield, La Trucha in Madrid, proper old school madrile?os eating old school tapas.

Cal Pep in Barcelona. Though it's been descended on by the great unwashed in recent years.

And L'Esguard, in Saint Andreu de Llavaneres nr Barcelona. Miguel Sanchez Romera used to do a pretty mean nine-course menu, though he may have cut that down recently(?). The wine cellar is fun (bottles nestling in all kinds of nooks in the sandstone beneath the restaurant).

There used to be a great restaurant in Marbella called El Toro's.

But you cannot beat Khan's in Puerto Banus for Indian food.

I actually went to Puerto Banus about 10 years ago, didn't have a single decent meal! Any touristy area in spain seems to be a non-starter for decent grub. I had some nice food in Barcelona, but again, the majority of places are just serving up re-heated rubbish to tourists.

A slightly sweeping statement regarding a city of 4 million people? I've generally had good food in Barcelona, and without having to look too far from the obvious tourist areas.

I was actually referring to the tourist areas... should have been more specific.

I don't think it's unfair though - I would say the same about the west end of London. Both are fine if you do a bit of research, otherwise there's a good chance of ending up with a disappointing meal.

    • We are talking about Lambeth Council, not Southwark, but I agree. It will be interesting to see if Lambeth fill part of that space with another hire out to a private events company.  As to the idea that what is gained financially from hiring out Peckham Rye Park is a good trade off, does not account for long-term damage to the park and the loss of access to the community for a month at least, in the best summer months where trees and shrubs are in full bloom and animals are birthing or rearing youngsters. For the Council to claim they are 'green' when they allow this is hypocrisy at its finest.
    • Regarding Gala fees: https://services.southwark.gov.uk/assets/attach/280615/GALA-2024-and-one-stage-shows-stakeholder-consultation-findings-report.pdf‘ ‘’The decision to host large/major-scale commercial (ticketed) events in Southwark was taken in 2017, deemed necessary in order to raise enough revenue to offset the running costs of the Events service, which supports the delivery of 50+ outdoor community events per year, and in order to continue to fund a range of high quality, free events across Southwark through the Cultural Celebrations Fund grants programme.’’
    • Sorry, not having a dig at Southwark for that.   I'm just shocked that next door they've chosen to abandon such an institutional community / family event so they can keep pumping out commercial stuff instead.   I suppose the same could happen here next although we don't really have any longstanding family events like that one.
    • No doubt the schools in Harrogate are being discussed on the East Harrogate Forum or whatever. Dulwich College is being discussed because it's local. Saying "ooh, there were loads of schools mentioned" is a bit dismissive. It was Dulwich College that referred sex abuse allegations about pupils to the police and Dulwich College that used the spectre of the police to suppress dissent. 🤔
