former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?

Recommended Posts

Hi James

I'm about to send the management of Everyone Active an email, but wanted to give you a heads up first. Perhaps this has been covered elsewhere on the forum or earlier in this thread, so apologies if so...

The a/c is not working in the upstairs exercise class rooms (or quite possibly in the whole building i am not sure) and apparently is not going to be fixed until march 2018. in the rooms instead Everyone Active have placed one solitary plug-in a/c unit which gives someone within 3 feet of it a nice cold blast... but nothing for everyone else!

i have just come out of a HITT class where the room was dangerously hot - i certainly felt faint and i am sure others did too - plus the floor is getting slippy with all the extra sweat... in the current heat it will not be long until someone has a serious (and potentially litigious to southwark?) accident

What can we do to expedite the works so that the a/c improves before march 2018?

thanks

Dear James

I live on Shawbury Road, just off Lordship Lane. It has become a beacon for deliveroo drivers who park here - I'm guessing as it's so close to the restaurants they pick up from - rather than where they are supposed to park at their depot. Several times a week our evenings or weekends are marred by motorbikes and scooters revving up, going up and down the road and tonight I saw one of the motorbikes going up and down doing wheelies. We are a residential road with lots of young families. I, and other residents, have contacted deliveroo about their drivers anti-social behaviour before but nothing changes. What can the council do?

Hi LocalMum,

Cllr Rosie Shimell has taken up this casework.

Hi pilsbury, goldilocks,

The Leisure centre aircon and lift problems are unreal. The total renovation took place finishing 2011. So not exactly old and the lifts and aircon keep failing taking inordinate time to get fixed.

Hi James

One of my near neighbours had a disabled space installed about a year ago. The elderly person who it was for has not lived there for 9 months or so. The space is never used except for delivery vans being there for 5 minutes now and again. How can we request it to be reversed since I do not feel comfortable approaching the neighbour directly?

Hi,

The pedestrian/ bicycle pathway next to Dulwich Hamlets that leads from Abbotswood to the Dulwich Village/ Denmark Hill cycle path is getting incredibly overgrown and is barely passable in places. Who should I contact about getting this cut back (ideally on a frequent basis!). There are lots of stinging nettles overhanging the pathway and lots of small children are using it!

Thanks.

Completely by coincidence (I assume!), the pathway was actually being cleared this afternoon and is much better already. Hopefully whoever is responsible for it (I'm not sure if this is the council or a private owner) will keep on top of it for the rest of the summer!

Hi seenbeen,

If you email me Ill ask council officials to review it - usually they get removed once the original applicant is no longer using it.

Hi Emmie42,

GLA Assembly member Caroline Pidgeon reported this issue to me several weeks ago. So you can thank her.

Really should be on a proactive maintenance list - I'm pushing for this.

Hi kford,

This seems a systemic issue. I reported it yesterday and several other instances. It should take long to get fixed...

Hello,

I would like to bring something to your attention once again Councillor Barber..

As you know, there is an illegal garage operating from Bawdale Road and I would really like to know what is being done about it? - we have sent numerous pictures and flagged this up with you on numerous occasions, but nothing is being done. If you remember, this was an issue back in 2013 on Whateley Road where the garage was previously. The mechanics are on the road constantly mending vehicles and parking cars. This is leaving mess, oil and general debris on a daily basis. They use foul language around the kids that live on the road and one of the mechanics is sleeping in the back of one of the vans now. They are constantly drinking and two of the cars have basically been abandoned on the road. As you are aware, parking is a nightmare around here anyway, let alone running a business on it. This is illegal and I can't understand how you are turning a blind eye to it time and time again. For residents on this road, it's becoming a pain and we would like it rectified.

Please let me know what you propose to do regarding this matter please. We are getting tired of reporting this to the council and to you....

Thanks in advance!

Dear Councillor Barber,

The sign on the bus stand at the top of Barry road has changed and it's operation is no longer limited to overnight. There is no time limit set for the operation of the stand.

Cars are still parking in the area marked for the bus stand.

Are they risking a PCN or is there a further stage before that?

There's a brown bin on the footpath outside my house, which does not have a lid. I've asked the council to collect it a few months ago, but it didn't happen. When I previously reported it, it was full of random rubbish and had filled up with, presumably, rain water so it absolutely stank. I cleared all of the rubbish and water out of it, still not collected. It's now filled up again with rubbish. I presume it's because it's open and passers by use it as a dustbin. I contacted the council this week again, for the 5th or 6th time and there's still no response or advice on how to resolve.

Any ideas?

Hi Callo143,

Can you email me your address please and any reference numbers form your contact with the council and I'll get it sorted for you.

Hi first mate,

i'd rather people didn't empty such bins on the road - possibly gets things resolved but what a res and work for the street cleaners to clear-up. Not good.

    • The plans The developer Berkeley Homes have submitted a planning application to redevelop the Aylesham Centre close to the junction of Peckham High Street and Rye Lane, containing Morrison’s supermarket, car park, & petrol station, Aylesham shopping arcade and most of that side of Rye Lane between Hanover Park and Peckham High Street. The application is for a mixed housing, retail, leisure and commercial development, in buildings ranging from 5 to 20 storeys. Impact Local people who have studied the detailed plans think that the development would dominate the historic town centre which has evolved since the 18th century, and would ruin the Conservation Area which was awarded in 2011 'to preserve and enhance its character and appearance'. More than 65% of the homes to be built in this unimaginative over-bearing development will be unaffordable by most people who live in Southwark, and provide inadequate open and green space for this part of Peckham. Need for discussion This is such an important issue for south London that it needs wide discussion before the Council Planning Committee takes its decision (not before next Spring). A free on-line talk and discussion to clarify the heritage issues we all need to think about is being held on Monday 11th November 7-8.30pm. All will be welcome. Please register on this link: https://Defend-Peckhams-Heritage-2024.eventbrite.co.uk There are several other key issues raised by the plans which are being examined in the Aylesham Community Action (ACA) campaign. You can find the link to all that and other useful information here: www.linktr.ee/acapeckham The zoom session is being arranged by Peckham Heritage the local group that has grown from the community work alongside the restoration of nine historic buildings in Peckham High Street through the Townscape Heritage Initiative. We hope that EDF members who value local heritage will be able to attend the session to hear and take part in the discussion, and report back to this topic so the discussion can continue.
